It is worth mentioning that the second OVA covered here was directed by one Akiyuki Shinbo, later to go on to helm Madoka Magica and Bakemonogatari among many other things, which explains a lot of the weird aspect ratio stuff (it's a trademark) and the intense tone shift. I've honestly been curious about it for a while because of his involvement, and despite some obvious issues, it's a visually appealing show, so I'll probably watch it.
Sage covered another of his works awhile ago, Twilight of the Dark Master. Sadly I doubt he knows who he is, which is a shame because otherwise we could get a month of Akiyuki Shinbo.

Also like many 90s otaku he spent a lot of time around computers, and used an old Unix program called 'tgif' -- usually used for creating technical diagrams, schematics, and the like -- to create anime girl vector art. He was really into Galaxy Fräulein Yuna at the time, and prominently featured art of Yuna and Yuri Cube (among other characters from other series) on his page. I thought I was missing out on something cool for not having seen Yuna. Ehhh, I was wrong.
That was about the first thing when I heard Belldandy mentioned, although I get strong Tenchi Muyo vibes through some character designs to. For some reason, a cross over between them could actually work or be complete trash.
I'm gonna make a fairly meta prediction here. When Sage finally does his final episode, we'll all find out that the whole run of videos has been nothing but his own insane ramblings in an asylum, and that Suave and this new Rambo McBeefcake character are just manifestations of a wicked case of multiple personality disorder.
And that mention of the TurboGrafx-16 brought back all those memories of playing a cousin's copy of "Keith Courage in Alpha Zones" at the family Christmas get-togethers. Only now do I learn that that very game was based off a Sunrise comedy series named "Mashin Eiyuuden Wataru", and the game's "Nova Suit" was no suit at all, but a small and semi-autonomous super robot named Ryujinmaru. Sage, thanks for the memories, man.
Man I love that style. I miss the 90s. I want the strange and hilarious Dragon Ball/ Sailor Moon style back instead of the generic edgelord "we kill each other and grope our siblings boobs" style like e.g. Akame Ga Kill.
MforMovesets This is a little ironic considering that a lot of the shit that Sage has reviewed, revolve around boob touching, unfunny gags, and poor plot lines. Most of which from the 80s and 90s.

Anime nowadays look nothing like Crybabay, Masaaki Yuasa, the director, has a style that is completely his own, for better or worse. If they had given the characters a darker or solid colour in KLK, then they may have clashed against the backgrounds, which has this very soft look to it. Some shows like Magical Circle Guru Guru and Osomatsu, have to have a cartoony look, as that's what the originals looked like.

I actually like part 2, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna Returns, it is my guilty pleasure. I enjoyed the op and close of the soundtrack and still listen to those songs today. I didn't much care for the first one tho. I probably would've enjoyed it more if the world was explained. I agree, the slow girl is the greatest.

Magical girls are better when they're actually made for little girls, not grown men. Sailor moon did most of this before and better. Because they can tell a fun adventure story without all the stupid fanservice and 'moe'.
I feel that the reason so many Magical Girl animes are bad when they are made for adults has nothing to do with the genre but because they tend to be "Harem" animes... And HOW many Harem animes are there that are just capitalizing on popular market trends? Or rather it is like Horror or Romance, these aren't flawed genres just low effort high reward, which means they attract schlock.

So while I enjoy the universe of Madoka Magica, I do not enjoy the author's boner for suffering he's got going on. The ending of the original series was perfect because it was a return to form, of 'even if things are terrible there will always be hope.' If you haven't read the manga/ watched Crystal you wouldn't know but Sailor Moon has a lot of gruesome death in it. You've basically gone through everything I've ever seen on a run through Amazon's back catalog, and every retro 80s/90s anime I've ever had a fleeting curiosity about, you have covered; except of course for the few that I'm still waiting for, namely Dirty Pair and Lupin the 3rd. OH FUCKING FINALLY!!!! I think I've been asking for Orguss 02 for years in the comments. I discovered it by accident on the sci fi channel one night here in Ireland and I genuinely enjoyed it. I assumed it has aged really badly but it still has a fond spot in my memory all the same for its mix of diesal punk and mecha, also as a bizarre sequel to a series that never travelled outside of japan.
Oh dang. I didn't even realize that was Cynthia Martinez. She got so few roles at ADV but had such a fun and unique sound. Ya'll probably don't agree, but she is what made Lina Inverse so fun in the movie versions of Slayers compared to the television series. Also, I'm getting some Project A-ko parallels here.
When was this Dub made? If it was still the 90s then I'm surprised how many of these VAs are still around. The lead is practically playing the same character as Prisma Illya. For all my desire to see this as a proto Nanoha or Symphogear, those shows would hav found a way to save the little sister in the end.

Ah yes! My favorite example of "Why I don't watch dubs". Bit of a shame you didn't mention Yuna began as Gundam F-91 Girl but yes, I was the ONE person who was glad this got released. I found the Saturn version of Yuna 1 at an import game store and beat it only to then find the second half of this at a Sam Goody on VHS. I was STILL confused because Yuri isn't introduced until the second game and the second OVA is actually based on the THIRD game (which is a strategy game) but I did enjoy it because it was Yuna. I enjoyed it A LOT more when I got it on DVD and could watch it subbed. Yuri's dub voice is a COMPLETE botch (she's actually supposed to be very soft spoken, which contrasts her bombastic attitude). But yeah this whole thing actually began because one of the Gundam designers was drawing Gundams as cute girls, RED Entertainment saw F-91 Girl and said "Dude can you make a game out of that?" and it became Yuna. As you might have noticed, what you have is two separate OVA series. The first takes place after the second game and is an original story while the second takes place in the middle of the third game and is a recap. It's a damn shame they didn't recap the first game because the plot is actually way more fun from the beginning: Yuna becomes the Savior of the Light by winning a swimsuit contest. She had NO CLUE that winning meant getting power armor, a robo fairy, and a giant robot and being told to defeat the 13 Frauleins of Darkness but that's what happens but instead of killing them she befriends all the villains instead proving that she really IS the Savior of the Light...and by "befriend" I mean gives them all a massive crush on her. Yes, Yuna saves the galaxy with the power of lesbianism. With THAT in mind, this really IS a crap anime! All the good parts were left in the games and what we get is a bunch of useless fluff. Also, Yuna has the same Japanese voice actress as Sasami which was no doubt a MASSIVE selling point. Watching the various game openings on TH-cam always gives me a smile. ESPECIALLY the third game. ...and isn't it weird how the TurbografX-16 was a massive flop in the states and in Japan is slaughtered the NES and even both of its successors, reigning over the Japanese game industry for more than a decade?

OH FUCKING FINALLY!!!! I think I've been asking for Orguss 02 for years in the comments. I discovered it by accident on the sci fi channel one night here in Ireland and I genuinely enjoyed it. I assumed it has aged really badly but it still has a fond spot in my memory all the same for its mix of diesal punk and mecha, also as a bizarre sequel to a series that never travelled outside of japan.
Oh dang. I didn't even realize that was Cynthia Martinez. She got so few roles at ADV but had such a fun and unique sound. Ya'll probably don't agree, but she is what made Lina Inverse so fun in the movie versions of Slayers compared to the television series.

Ah yes! My favorite example of "Why I don't watch dubs". Bit of a shame you didn't mention Yuna began as Gundam F-91 Girl but yes, I was the ONE person who was glad this got released. I found the Saturn version of Yuna 1 at an import game store and beat it only to then find the second half of this at a Sam Goody on VHS. I was STILL confused because Yuri isn't introduced until the second game and the second OVA is actually based on the THIRD game (which is a strategy game) but I did enjoy it because it was Yuna.
I enjoyed it A LOT more when I got it on DVD and could watch it subbed. Yuri's dub voice is a COMPLETE botch (she's actually supposed to be very soft spoken, which contrasts her bombastic attitude).
But yeah this whole thing actually began because one of the Gundam designers was drawing Gundams as cute girls, RED Entertainment saw F-91 Girl and said "Dude can you make a game out of that?" and it became Yuna. As you might have noticed, what you have is two separate OVA series. The first takes place after the second game and is an original story while the second takes place in the middle of the third game and is a recap.
It's a damn shame they didn't recap the first game because the plot is actually way more fun from the beginning: Yuna becomes the Savior of the Light by winning a swimsuit contest. She had NO CLUE that winning meant getting power armor, a robo fairy, and a giant robot and being told to defeat the 13 Frauleins of Darkness but that's what happens but instead of killing them she befriends all the villains instead proving that she really IS the Savior of the Light...and by "befriend" I mean gives them all a massive crush on her.
Yes, Yuna saves the galaxy with the power of lesbianism.
With THAT in mind, this really IS a crap anime! All the good parts were left in the games and what we get is a bunch of useless fluff.
Also, Yuna has the same Japanese voice actress as Sasami which was no doubt a MASSIVE selling point. Watching the various game openings on TH-cam always gives me a smile. ESPECIALLY the third game.
...and isn't it weird how the TurbografX-16 was a massive flop in the states and in Japan is slaughtered the NES and even both of its successors, reigning over the Japanese game industry for more than a decade?
