Any lesson focusing on Living Colour that starts with Open Letter To A Landlord is gonna be a good one.

Your knowledge of music theory is clearly off the charts... but your ear is gold. I would love a lesson on your approach to ear training.

The video started playing while i was doing dishes, and i couldn't help myself but start singing, "Now you can tear a building down..."

I've always been a huge fan of LC!Alot of my friends didn't get them, they were a lot different than the hair metal bands of the day! I remember that Saturday Night Live episode well, I was mind blown by Vernon's technique!

About time for vernon reid..long time coming..his guitar style is a mix of heavy fusion..pop..punk..gutar-hero metal..the album Stain is perfect snapshot of how heavy his guitar playing really is..check it out..especially the songs auslander..go away..and leave it alone

I'm not a Living Colour fan but Vivid is a great album packed with great songs and great playing from all the band. Really love it. Until I saw this lesson I didn't perhaps realise just how good a guitarist Vernon Reid actually is.

Amen! I was almost 13 when Vivid came out and I was INSTANTLY in love with Cult of Personality! Then the solos happened and I was scratching my head. I thought it was a mess initially. Like Vinnie Vincent snuck in and recorded the solos. Then I saw them perform live on a late night talk show and he played the same solos almost verbatim. This registered because I thought, "wait...he's playing this on purpose? what am I missing?" I already played guitar and was taking bass lessons at the time from a phenomenal bass teacher (way above what I deserved at the time) from Berklee. Huge Jaco nut. I asked him what was going on and he educated me on Scofield and Metheny and jazz and how Vernon was inspired by all of that. Suddenly, a door opened. Vernon knocked me on my ass! And I loved everything they ever did!

Vernon was a voice at the end of the 80's and into the early 90's that was worth listening to. Saw them twice and it was a mix of metal, ska, funk, and R&B. Excellent show! As always, thanks DB! Great content!

3:23 Curtis Mayfield! On the Classic Albums episode with The Band, Robbie Robertson, explaining his influences and the inspiration for The Weight, mentions Mayfield and plays a very similar riff. Excellent video! I really needed this!

i met all of em, 3 years ago in Louisville, KY @ Mercury Ballroom. Talked to Vernon Reid for about 15 min. He was so down to Earth, just a regular guy. It was so cool. Glad you finally did a segment on LC. I flipped when you played the intro and riff to Desperate People. Wow!!! Good one, Dave. Made the hair on the back of my neck stand up!!! Rock On, Dave!!! This went right on my favorites list, btw. \m/

You could've stopped with "Open Letter To A Landlord" and that would've been awesome enough! But...thank goodness you didn't! Awesome lesson I can't wait to get these riffs under my fingers...
and channel my inner Corey Glover for Vocals! But then what about the bass and drums????? I only had the pleasure of seeing them once. It wasn't until their 25th anniversary of Vivid. @ Knuckleheads in Kansas City. Truely an exceptional band. They did not disappoint! An awesome evening to remember! No Muz Scullings, but Doug Wimbish is a force unto himself. I highly recommend Living Colour to anyones daily listening diet! Any of the band members solo albums should be in ones audio collection as well! Peace Out Everyone! Great Job Dave!!!!!!

These guys were so great and so underrated. Every player in the band was awesome. I was lucky enough to see them live in 1990 (Wil did a drum clinic earlier in the day before the second of 2 shows from the night earlier) at the Commodore in Vancouver then in 1993 (with Bad Brains!) at 86 street. This second show was with Doug Wimbish. I was lucky enough to meet them at a record signing at Sam The Record Man.
I loved their song writing and they were ALL such great players but I have to say, most of Vernon's solos weren't anything I liked especially in comparison to his rhythm playing. He sounded sloppy and like someone trying to play faster than they actually could. As I was also listening to Extreme, Mr Big and Van Halen, to hear Vernon, his soloing didn't sound good in comparison. Everything else to me was great and they were my fav band for a few years.
