Vernon Reid, the guitar player wrote this about growing up in the Lower East Side. In the 70s and 80s landlords were burning their buildings down for insurance money, and often kids and/ or elderly people were killed in these fires-- by the 80s rich businessesmen smelled $ and started positioning elected officials to green light a full forced gentrification and clearing of rent stabilized units. Even visiting now, every time you go back to the LES, something's been torn down. This song is incredibly powerful.

Living Colour are tremendous live, to this day. They're touring smaller venues in the US thru May, so hopefully will be doing some European dates for us over the summer. If you get the chance, grab tickets. And get familiar with at least the "Vivid" and "Time's Up" albums so you can join in with most of the crowd participation parts of the show ;)
On a selfish level, I love that I can go & see them headline small venues these days, rather than big venue gigs of the early '90s (altho that was fun too in a different way). This is one of the songs you can expect Corey to try out the crowd for singalong potential. A few hundred of us (almost exclusively white) rock/metal Scots have gotten a smile out of them with our singalong volume in smaller Glasgow venues in more recent years... try to do the same for them, cos they will 100% give you a great show! ;)

Not sure if your aware that it was a Black Woman who was the pioneer of what would be the foundation of what would later be called Rock guitar
She was playing it in the 1930s decades before anyone else Credited by Led Zeppelin The Beatles and so many more Elivis would sneak out of his house when he was a teenager And go sit in the back of Sunday night service at the black church to watch her play Her name is Sister Rosetta Tharpe . th-cam.com/video/PMp-gp7AvQE/w-d-xo.html

It's interesting you're talking about stereotypes because Living Colour has the exact song on the subject you're talking about. It's called... "Type".
