    And this is why oblivions leveling system sucks it actively discourages the player from building a character that specializes in what the player is focusing on. The worst class for a pure mage to pick is the mage class it's stupid couple that with it's leveling system where every enemy levals with you so you can't really get stronger. Well you can but you ethier have to really understand the game mechanics and exploit them or you just use the difficulty slider to make yourself stronger.

      I completely agree that the leveling system is bad, but I don't think it really hits mages that hard. I picked the built-in mage class(ye, you might be better off picking diff major skills but a magicka race), I power leveled Alchemy then Destruction(you can make perfectly castable OP spells with it, even with 1 100% weakness spell it can hit for 1k), and was hella strong because of my magicka pool and pure mage in general being the strongest class in the game. Once you master Alteration and Illusion, you're a demi-god at that point.
      I also had no problems with leveling, just did 1 major at a time. I quit on maxing out strength and agility because it got boring and I don't need it.

      @@n1kl051 true mages in general can get stupidly powerful unless you're using the apprentice high elf sign then you have an Achilles heel. I just used mage class and pure mage as a simple example I didn't feel like looking up actually classes to find a better one.
      Edit: actually what you described is definitely understanding and exploiting the mechanics.

      You dont care about stats other than intelligence and willpower as a mage. I picked up mage class, ive done mage guild quests almost exclusively, near the end. And I'm lvl 23, high lvl monsters are a joke on normal difficulty. I use destr, conj and illusion. After maximizing int and willpower i don't even know what stats to invest in. Just put 1 point in end, and the rest doesn't really matter.

      Always the Best Way. Also make it something that can be controlled with ease. If you know you won’t use it often and is more situational, then make it a Major. If it’s something you will always use, it might be best to make it a Minor or you risk leveling up too early.
      I’m doing a Highest Difficulty Run atm with The Antroach (so I have a higher chance of not dying to a random Magic Spell). I made Block, Light Armor, Restoration, Sneak, Conjuration, Illusion, and Hand to Hand as my 7 Majors. Each one is optional/situational so you don’t have to worry about the Level up issue. Currently Level 13 and I already have 100 Int with Max Conjuration & Alchemy and am currently working on my Light Armor (will have that Maxed by Lvl 18 with a 100 Speed) along with Heavy Armor since I have the talent to make strong Healing Potions.

    I don't agree with most of the comments. First, if you want to be a mage, pick the race High Elf (+100 magicka). Second, pick the birthsign The Apprentice (+100 magicka). Third, pick the specialization Magic, pick the favored attributes Luck and Endurance and pick Illusion, Alchemy, Conjuration, Mysticism, Alteration, Destruction and Restoration as major skills. This way, your Maximum Level is 48 (+3 when you complete the last daedric quest) which allows you to max all your attributes (including luck). Further more, you will over 400 base magicka and over 600 health points (as long as you prioritize reaching 100 endurance as fast as you can).
    Very fun to play and it creates the most op'ed character you can get as far as I know.

    The leveling system is easy enough to understand once you understand how the game is constructed. Bethesda did not make that easy however. Any character you create has 7 attributes. Each attribute has 3 skills it governs. When creating your character, you pick major skills. It's advantageous to pick skills from different attributes so you don't have 2 major skills from THE SAME ATTRIBUTE. What this boils down to is to pick 1 skill from each of the different attributes. Whether or not you find all attributes useful to you is up to you.
    Now, your major skills control your character's level. 10 skillups in ANY COMBO OF YOUR MAJOR SKILLS WILL ENABLE YOU TO SLEEP AND ADVANCE TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
    However your attributes can also get bonus's at the level up screen. The bonus's are from 1 to 5 points. To get a +5 in any attribute, you have to get 10 skillups in ANY COMBO OF THE SKILLS THAT ATTRIBUTE GOVERNS. For example:
    Endurance, one of the most important attributes in the game, governs BLOCK, ARMORER, and HEAVY ARMOR. Lets assume your major skill from this attribute is Block. 10 skillups in any combo of block, armorer or heavy armor will reward you with a +5 at the level up screen for endurance. You have to avoid leveling up Block, the major skill in this example, to avoid getting 10 skillups in a major skill. Remember that 10 skillups in any combo of your major skills will enable you to level up. Once that 10th skillup in a major skill is gained, you can no longer get skillups in any of your minor skills to gain a +5 in that attribute. This is what gamers mean by saying you have over leveled as far as this game is concerned.
    So, to sum up, concentrate getting some skillups in your minor skills (using the above example) in Armorer and Heavy armor. This is because if you got 10 skillups in Block, the major skill for this example, it would enable a levelup and you would not be able to get a +5 for any more skills. Any skills leveled up after you get the notification that you should sleep, will contribute to your next levelup.
    Also, When you level, you gain health points equal to a tenth of your endurance, rounded down. It is possible to get a +5 in attributes that don't have any skills that that Attribute governs as a major skill.

    • @PacifictheCasualGamer
      @PacifictheCasualGamer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not understand why Bethesda went like this. I feel like a little more creativity would be nice. Now, I have never thought of a system to replace it, so it might well be the way to go. idk.
      I don't go with one skill from each attribute. I pick the most easily controlled skills, and make sure they will not overlap from using them. The math works the same, give or take a few levels.

      @@PacifictheCasualGamer It just all seems dumb. If I'm a mage, why in the fuck do I have armorer or heavy armor? And instead of working on my magic skills, I'm practicing this shit? I want to play the game but I think I'll just roll with console commands. Games are supposed to be fun, not a fucking micromanaging nightmare that doesn't make any intuitive sense.

  • @tytar1037
    @tytar1037 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think Atronach is better so Willpower becomes useless. You can get Endurance to 100 ASAP which will give you way more max health at max level. Since the health gain per level is determined by your endurance. Also personality doesn’t effect Illusion spell effectiveness. Wearing any armor will nerf your spell effectiveness though. Your frenzy won’t work at the level it’s supposed to.
    But wear heavy armor early game just to help get +5 endurance every level. Train armorer every level until it’s at 50. Since you’re Atronach, you need tons of potions which will help getting +5 in Intelligence.

  • @infinitedeath1384
    @infinitedeath1384 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The best way to make a mage character is to have most of the mage skills in the minor category, and pick skills that you can level up really fast as major skills. So say i want to roleplay as a spellsword. Light armor, destruction, blocking, blade (enchanted shortsword for roleplay purposes), restoration, conjuration, sneak, and athletics. These 8 skills will be minor as i will use them the most. So with that, i can use everything i want to use as i play through the game, then once i get enough skill upgrades that is governed by the attributes i want, i will power level a single skill that i put into my major skills until i level up. The major skills i would use are heavy armor, blunt, alchemy, alteration, acrobatics, hand to hand, and illusion. These skills are all really easy to train, and you can control them without leveling up too soon. I would upgrade acrobatics and illusion first, as these would be the most useful for the playstyle. I would put conjuration instead of alchemy, but i'm sticking to the rules of playing on hard mode. So conjuration is a must use early on. So with this, i wouldn't have to grind as much, as many of the skills i am using as a spellsword vary in their favored attributes, so i save some time, and am efficiently getting my attributes up every level. You could for example, level intelligence and strength at the same time. Summon a skeleton and swing away with a sword. 2 Skills that you use all the time, and you've already leveled them enough to get 5 points in intelligence and strength for the next level. Then you could just train heavy armor up 10 times, which is the amount required for a level, and a 5 point bonus in endurance. Really efficient way of leveling up, and getting those attribute points. Also, pick either endurance and intelligence, or endurance and willpower as your favored stats. The reason you don't want to pick intelligence and willpower is because you want that endurance stat to be as high as possible, so that you can have more health.
    But if you want to make the best mage possible, and stop at level 30, you want to increase endurance, intelligence and willpower first. Then you can focus a bit more on speed or strength, until you hit level 30. The reason you don't really want to get past level 30, is because the enemies level with you, which makes the game harder especially above level 40-50, and level 30 is highest level that unique weapons can scale to. This rule of only getting to level 30 applies to all classes. The fights will become tedious if you level past 30. So of course, if i was making a stealth archer, i would go endurance, speed and agility first. If i'm going warrior, endurance, strength and speed first as well. Of course, you would have to change the minor and major skills so you can level accordingly. As far as races go, the best race is undoubtedly the breton. 50% resistance to magic means you only need the mundane ring which gives a whopping 50% magic resistance, so you can use enchantments elsewhere. Let's say at level 30, you're lacking some strength or speed, you could enchant to get those up. Or if you're happy with them, you could get rid of all your armor and use clothes with the shield enchantment so your magic is at 100% effectiveness. If you're going for a mage, the best star to pick is the lady. 10+ to willpower and endurance early on is perfect for a mage, and bretons already start with a higher intelligence and willpower stat. This way, you can get your endurance, intelligence and willpower to 100 as fast as possible, so then you can put more levels into the strength and speed stats. You definitely want some strength if you want to be a spellsword. Couple that with an enchantment, and the speed of a shortsword, and you'll be decimating enemies. Conjure a storm atronach here, throw a fireball there, and melt someone's health with your enchanted short sword. You would be unstoppable, long as you stop at level 30 :P.

      I use a similar type of set up to level up. I learned that I like to play Oblivion many different ways with one character, so I put my least favorite to use controllable skills as my Majors.
      I usually use the lady when I am a mage, but sometimes I use the warrior because I'm a hoarder. I'll also try out the apprentice every once and awhile. For me I don't like using Bretons, I like to risk it and go with High Elves, or go with a class with more endurance to start off with.

    • @infinitedeath1384
      @infinitedeath1384 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PacifictheCasualGamer Yeah high elves aren't a bad option either, thanks to the extra magic. You can offset the magic weakness with enchantments. I like to roleplay a lot, so i restrict my character to using only certain skills, except for when i'm leveling. So if i am a spellsword, I will only use shortswords, light armor, light shields, destruction, restoration and some conjuration for the whole playthrough.

    Recently started a pure mage run, altmer with mage stone birthsign(hoping that doesnt bite me later with a magic pool that's too low), warrior specialization to leave more growing room for my pertinent skills, and for major skills I kept Destruction and Conjuration as skills I'll be using often, but took Blade, Marksman, Mercantile, Heavy and Light armor despite not wearing any armor at all. Pretty much just making sure I get 5 in endurance and intelligence for as long as possible and dumping the rest into speed.
    What sucks is just having to choose between leveling quickly and being weak but having access to great leveled gear, or avoiding leveling quickly to keep the world scaling down and missing out on that gear. Pretty much going with the latter and waiting for max sigil stones, then reloading on the first one until I get Fortify magicka lmao.

    I just dont fundamentally get why anyone would do this. If you're roll playing a pure mage, your only skills worth mentioning would be magic. Not your ability to carry things, not your speed and certainly not how many hits you can take from a sword. I guess min maxing just dosent appeal to me anymore with these games I used to do it since morrowind then I played Skyrim and thought it was the best at roll playing, but now I see these older games for what they were and you truely dont have to do any of this min maxing if you want to play any specific class you just play to the class and enjoy the game within those rules.

    • @jaygiemtg7511

      I think it's more a product of the leveling system itself. Whereas in Skyrim, you don't have to spend your skill points as soon as you level up and the only attributes are Health, Magicka and Stamina. Honestly though, playing the game again and really paying attention to how my skills are leveling and trying to level efficiently has made the game a lot more fun. Not because of all the recordkeeping, but because I NEED to keep rotating between playstyles in order to make sure I get +5 in 3 attributes EVERY level.
      Early game is kind of tedious with Athletics going up CONSTANTLY though, so I always have to worry about how close it is to leveling to waste as few skill-ups as possible. Whatever you do, do NOT make Athletics a major skill.

  • @silkybuns799
    @silkybuns799 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you wanna power level, don't worry about personality. It's the most useless attribute. Magic circumvents it completely with the right spell. For major skills, I would choose something from every attribute except personality. I would suggest three magic ones like alteration, mysticism and restoration. Easy to control how they level. I would also suggest hand-to-hand, lockpicking, Athletics and acrobatics since, without exploits, all take a while to level. You really don't want to go past level 25 in oblivion and if you've been leveling everything evenly, like getting all your attributes to 80 (besides personality and Luck) before maxing them you should be able to get every thing up there at or before level 25.

    • @silkybuns799
      @silkybuns799 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also get endurance to 100 before anything else. Like as soon as you can. Forget that rule about leveling them all evenly for endurance. The sooner you have 100, the more health you'll have at 25

    So most recently I picked all non magic major skills and decided I am going to not level up at all. Truthfully I have failed and am level 2 because I got hit a bunch wearing Kot9 Crusader Armor and had a no sleep/rest level up mod on. Oh well.
    My intention was to stay level 1 and raise all my magic skills to 100 at level 1. The major advantage of this is I can basically 1 shot everything that isn't godlike/extraplanar/some kinds of undead with a -100 HP on touch custom spell. If I raise my level the enemies and general difficulty goes up.
    HOWEVER my magicka pool is limited and my other intention was, after getting to 100 on my magic skills at level 1, level up so I can play high level quests and have a bigger magicka pool/regen.
    But here's my concern: if I do that, each time I level up I cannot raise my intelligence or willpower because all the skills they govern are already maxed.
    Is this a valid concern and if so, am I correct to say that I should instead only raise my magic skills to 50 and then start levelling up, so that I still have the ability to max out my willpower and intelligence?

    • @PacifictheCasualGamer
      @PacifictheCasualGamer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I would do is find a fortify magic spell, do the mages guild, and put as much fortify magic on your stuff as possible. If you want to level up, willpower is a meh, but intelligence for sure.
      Now a note with the level system. Let's say you level up to level 2, but you do not rest. Now let's say you level up your skills. Those skills contribute to your level 3 bonuses, then when you would have been able to hit level 3, it goes to level 4, does that make sense? Basically, you store the levels, and when you do go to level up, all the level ups on the attributes will still be there.

    Breton Mage Class: Birhtsign: Mage, Specialist: Magic. Attributes: Endurance, Speed if Male, Strength if Female. Major Skills: Restoration, H2H, Mysticism, Alchemy, Speechcraft, Acrobatics, Marksman.
    Conjuration is vital, but easily raised as a minor skill. Build INT off of it. Restoration will level slowly even as a major skill. Use that plus Destruction (your KILL SKILL) to level WILL. Use your minor skills of Armorer, Heavy Armor and Block to build END each level. Don't worry about $$. You don't need to buy a house to store stuff. The Imperial City marketplace has 16 non-recycling bags that provide safe storage. You can sleep for free in the Arena basement and numerous other places. Do the mage guild initiation quests asap, especially the one in Skingrad which will get you a great basic fireball spell. There is no reason to level Personality ever since it has no effect on Illusion. Bribery works just fine for getting NPC's to like you enough for game purposes.

      @PacifictheCasualGamer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's right. So, pick an Orc that majors in all Magic skills. When you have leveled up your minor skills 20 times, level up your magic 10 times.

      @@PacifictheCasualGamer gotcha. And do I level every single minor skill 20 times, then all magic by 10?

    • @PacifictheCasualGamer
      @PacifictheCasualGamer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, just two skills, and then one major.
      If you read the skill information, theres a thing called a governing attribute. Basically, pick three attributes, two that can be leveled up by minor skills, and one by major skills, and do it that way.
      For example, Endurance is governed by Armorer, Heavy Armor, and Block. This means that I must level up any combo of those skills 10 times. I could do one of those skills 10, I could do a 7 and a 3, or a 1, 4, 5. This means that Endurance will get 5 points when you sleep, because each skill level up adds 1/2 a point to your level up points on your attributes
