    oddly enough, I have heard people complain about how smart the main characters were. especially in regards to figuring out what was going on relatively fast. I personally found that hella refreshing.

      blackdragon6 That's a strange complaint, but I guess that's how people are, heh. I agree with you, sounds like a good thing to me - a huge stereotype in horror is that the main characters are fucking stupid; going the opposite way should be praised

      i think the writer's did that, because your seeing it thru the eye's of the town sheriff and doctor wife and his deputy... so it wasnt like the typical zombie / horror movie when it's teens or people in their early 20's... and they are dumber than a box of rocks.. or God forbid, teen's trying to tell their parents about something going on in a horror movie... and the parents tell their kids, they are over reacting or some stupid ass shit..

    This movie will always have a special place in my heart. I am not a very complicated man. I work contracting, but when I was younger I just worked for a small lawn keeping, landscaping, and snow removal company about 20 minutes away from that farm house in Iowa.
    I don't know exactly how it happened, but my boss got contracted to work on this movie, and my small 3 man crew was sent out to that abandoned house to make the property not look like shit and as if somebody actually lived there.
    Toughest outdoor work day of my life, and I once sat in a truck plowing snow for 40 hours straight.
    Anyway, we were kept in the dark about the movie, all we knew at the time was that it was for a movie. Nobody ever came out to the house while we were working except the property owner to pay us, and he wasn't allowed to tell us anything either.
    So I thought it was cool that I technically worked on a movie set for a day, got drunk that weekend, pretty sure I bragged about it too much to my friends (not dissimilar to what I'm doing now) and forgot about doing it after that.
    Needless to say I didn't even know The Crazies was that movie until I saw it. It was a zombie movie kind of, and being of huge fan of movies like it I saw it in theaters. I can't tell you the feeling I had when I was sitting in the theater and recognised the house onscreen as the one I worked on. Not a sense of pride or anything, it's was a weird sense of content knowing that the one movie I have or ever will work on is actually one I like and want to watch many times.
    My uncle who lives in Kansas was in a movie about Hellen Keller as an extra for about a second in a half, and that movie is shit. He's an asshole btw, so fuck him. Anyway, I'm just happy the movie is good ^^

    Not only was it a remake done right, it was horror done right. Good horror is when it resonates with the viewer long after the initial scare and not a bloody jumpscare. One notable instance in this film is the house burning scene.

    • @ArlanKels
      @ArlanKels 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      The reason it didn't do so well is because it put more emphasis on proper horror, which meant the kids who are used to jumpscare palooza couldn't handle it.

      Callum alexander - I'm with you there, it's why I often make a point of explaining that this is not another zombie film, and that Trixie is actually a mix of multiple existing diseases (i.e. rabies, tetanus, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and Ebola hemorrhagic fever) whenever it comes up in conversation.

    • @sickboy9496
      @sickboy9496 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, the upside to that is whenever anybody says that Danny Boyle reinvented "zombies" for 28 Days Later by creating "The Infected" you can just say that Romero did that first as well.

    • @FiercelyGold
      @FiercelyGold 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Callum alexander The thing is Romero zombies are second generation zombies after the voodoo zombies. Really, Romero didnt consider them zombies at first anyways. He called them "ghouls". Since zombies are not a real thing, they can be different as they are in different stories. Some can run. Some can talk. Some have a heartbeat. What matters is they are no longer themselves. They usually can't be reasoned with and are dangerous. They are a threat to humanity because they are so different. And in theory, a world with only zombies can't exsist, so they are a threat to their own existence, but they don't know this like smartypants eltist vampires might. All zombies are fascinating because of their differences and similarities. They are bringers of death. They are disgusting. They (usually) have no morals. But they are still at the top of the food chain. Truly scary.

    Even if it got lumped into being a zombie film, the Crazies is still one of my favorite movies. As "zombie movies" go, it's my favorite - instead of a film where people get turned into zombies overnight (Day of the Dead in 2008) we get a film that shows a town's population gradually change from being a simple small town to a town infested by nightmare and dread. People are seen changing slowly as the infection spreads through their bodies, starting at first by simple isolated cases of apparent insanity and dementia before being gradually changed to the ugly, monstrous, corroded-looking "crazies" we see by the second half of the film. That, IMO, is how a zombie movie SHOULD be made.

    You just made me remeber this movie! I watched it when I was too young and I didn't know it was a Romero remake. Also here in Italy apparently both the original and the remake were called "La città verrà distrutta all'alba" ("The city will be destroyed at dawn") instead of "The Crazies", probably because a literal translation is kinda difficult. Anyway, thank you for the work you do in exploring both old movies and their remakes (like the remake of "The Thing"), I learned a lot from your videos.

    You know, I think I kind of would have liked to see things from the government/soldier's perspective. I've kind of grown tired of the trope of the Government automatically being Galactic Empire levels of evil. I would have liked to see how they were in a really bad situation and felt horrible about what they were doing, but were doing what was necessary to stop an outbreak that could kill millions.

      If you haven't seen it, perhaps check out Steven Soderbergh's Contagion. It follows medical experts and government officials as they struggle to contain and cure the worldwide epidemic of a lethal virus. Although it's not a horror film, there is a lot of tension, and many of the characters do wrestle with their conscience's as they face impossibly difficult decisions. Excellent cast and great soundtrack too.

It looked exactly like what we see on those rare Midwest nights with moon and cloud. its just like day in the sky - but darker - and very white and blue. Anyway - You would know what I am describing if u ever saw a night like that. The thing is if u tried to take a picture of it, they never turn out to have the same look you see with your own eyes. They managed to capture that awesomeness in film, which I am not sure anyone else has managed to do, short of south pacific movies.

    In my opinion the 2010 version underperformed because people had two movies in mind that worked better: Dawn of the Dead (the Zack Synder remake) as a more classical zombie movie approach and 28 Days Later with the "people gone maaaaad"-theme. The Crazies seemed to stay inbetween the chairs and it wasn't original enough to get its own chair =) Just my 2 cents though.

    I quite enjoyed this movie. I saw it in theaters, one of the few theater experiences I remember from 2010. There was a couple two seats over from me and my buddy, a very large girl and a smallish girl. The large girl by the end of the movie looked to have swallowed her girlfriend as she was holding so tightly onto her, wrapping herself around her partner. She was terrified, it was pretty funny to glance over and see.
    You go onto RT and 56% audience, which means they didn't like the film as anything below 70 is shocking for an audience score. That's really bizarre to me but if I remember right, a lot of people thought it was a bit too by the numbers. Small town, good guy cop, loose cannon buddy, spooked but mildly competent wife, generally upbeat ending. I've watched it about three times now, and I can see why people would have issue there. If you told me to pick CARRIERS or this, I would pick Carriers any day of the week (however Carriers did even worse on RT, lmao). Better film all around. But if the option for both exists - and it does - there's no reason for this film to not also exist. It's like a zombie movie but ever so slightly more interesting, and that isn't enough for a lot of people.
    Those same people complain that movies are all gigantic budget messes but what can you do.

It wasn't just a complete redo, just with updated effects yet at the same time they didn't twist the movie into something that was crap and either PG-13 or just a pointless blood fest with an R- rating. I think i still prefer the original, but the remake is by no means a bad movie. It has some great acting in it and I liked it. If only more remakes would actually attempt to be good and not worry so much about making $500,000,000 in box office returns while being PG-13

    This was filmed close to my area and I happen to know a few friends who were extras and stand ins for the movie. The remake is extra special to me just because of that.

    It's about the closest medium to a Resident Evil 4 movie we will ever see.. Just like How the film" Hunted" was Basically Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater. At least when it came to the characters of The Boss and Snake... Mentor vs Student..

    In NC The Crazies was only featured in Art House Theatres and wasn't heavily promoted . I saw it because I worked for a theatre and I got in for free . ( I saw 78 new movies in 2010 . The Crazies was one of my favorites and a surprise small hit with Art House fans ( in Charlotte NC , not sure how it performed outside the state

    Now that's some pretty efficient film making. Today, location scouting means finding your sweeping vistas in New Zealand, and the rest we can shoot in Pinewood or wherever the local government will kick back the most. The $500k scout budget goes to helicopter rides and booze.

    Probably ought to check this one out in the future. This, like the Dawn of the Dead remake or many other 70s/80s horror remakes, seemed as if it dropped what I loved about the original movies and amplified those aspects I didn't like so much.
    The cutting between the citizens trying to survive, the army, and the scientists aiming to find a cure was what made me fall in love with the original The Crazies (a prime example for Romero's superb editing), so I never even bothered with the remake since it got rid of all of that. It's not that I think that it's unreasonable to remake The Crazies with a higher budget than what Romero had because some parts of the original can be called kind of sloppy, due to its independent nature and budgetary constraints.

      Well the Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead remakes were well done and worthy remakes to classics.
      Hills Have Eyes and Maniac are good remakes too. The original Crazies is one of my least fave romero films and is an improvement over the original.
      What about remaking 50s films like House on Haunted Hill and The Blob?

    Macon, Ga for the win. I was there when they were Filming in The Fountain Car Wash . But there was very heavy editing because the car wash was just a mile down the street from where little Richie played his guitar for money.

    I remember seeing the remake in theaters. I remember not caring for it. The loud sound moments when something "shocking" happened was way over done and actually made me laugh out loud when they're in a barn (I think) and they just grab a military guy, which is accompanied by a loud BAHHHSHEEEE sound, which was really, REALLY not need at that part. I was disappointed too by the baseball field scene. It was teased in the trailer and I remember thinking "Oh shit, thats going to be brutal, I gotta see that!" Then I see the movie, and that scene literally goes no where.

    The solutions they used for their budget sound beneficial to the local community beyond just providing a few temp jobs. It would be good if some of those ideas became routine for filmmakers.
    Instead of wasting money building a house to burn down, they helped train a volunteer fire department and got rid of an eyesore.
    Same with the other fire and police department training they included, plus using abandoned locations instead of building entire sets that will just be torn down after, finding people who own military helicopters instead of wasting a ton on renting one or CGI, ect ect.
    I never thought making a movie could be legitimately helpful to public services training, it's actually an awesome idea. The movie industry should look at those methods as a model, not an anomaly.
    (I know other films have done some of this stuff too, just surprised that the filming of this included a lot of good ideas that could, and should, be used more often.)
