    The great Philippine eagle seems more like a creature from a story than that of reality. Standing at a metre tall, with a 7ft wingspan and dagger-like talons, they are truly formidable animals, but with just 400 pairs left in the wild, are the most endangered raptors in the world.
    In December 2019, a young female Philippine eagle was miraculously rescued from the ocean off the south coast of Mindanao. The bird was starving, exhausted and after changing hands several times, was taken to the Philippine Eagle Foundation for rehabilitation. She was named 'Maasim'.
    On news of Maasim's story, biologist, Dan O'Neill, heads to the Philippines to follow her journey back to the wild. But after a major setback, the mission is turned upside down...

      Why can’t we introduce the Philippine eagle’s species to other forest lands such as Borneo and Indochina where as a threathened specie it could have more forest to roam and thus more likely able to propagate its number. Philippine dwindling forest doesn’t bode well to the survival of the species.

    • @yvan6750
      @yvan6750 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@osmondcalupad5918 I'm no expert but I think it needs more research because as we all know the Philippine eagle is a top predator so it might prey and wipe out smaller endemic species of the islands they are introduced. Geography plays a part also. However that's a good idea to save the specie just make sure not at the cost of other species. :)

    The names they give to these birds are so creative.
    Bighani means to fall in love or in awe.
    Pamana means Inheritance or Legacy
    Pag-asa means hope.
    There is another one which is Makilala-Hiraya. Makilala is the town she's found and Hiraya means "the fruit of one’s hopes, dreams and aspirations",

    I have, along with others, been involved in rescue for decades, and remember one in particular. The rescue and recovery of an adult black palm cockatoo. The bird had become critically ill when the gentleman most responsible in the case decided to wrap him up and hold him literally 24/7 ,while also feeding him. It was quite some years ago but that man's decision made perfect sense to me. That bird felt this man's heartbeat and warmth continually. He also spoke to him with tender encouragement. It took, I believe 2 or 3 weeks, but he recovered.

    What an incredible experience. I felt your satisfaction when the Queen Bird (Philippine Eagle) made it's appearance before your own eyes during the time when you were about to leave the place. It gives me goosebumps, really. That moment alone gives me an interpretation that the majestic queen bird was thankful and grateful for the people who helped her to get liberated and of course to you as her visitor from other part of the world who decided to see her despite the uncertainty of everything.

    • @kornkernel2232
      @kornkernel2232 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@janjamesramos247 Sadly hindi rin simple lang dahil hindi nagagawa. Pero tama ka nga, dapat talaga malimit ang pagkalat ng residential areas. Ang malaking problema sa Pilipinas eh walang Urban Planning. Tayo dito, tayo doon, maganda man or pangit. Karamihan ang issue dito ang mga LGU dahil hindi nila ma-manage ang area nila. Shortsighted din dahil pinapabili ang lupa pero walang masaydong plano as a whole at napapabayaan ang natitirang gubat.
      Ang ginagawa kasi, instead na redevelop ang existing area, bumibili nalang ng bakanteng lupa para sa new development. So lumalaki lang ang sakop ng bayan or city, nakakain ang gubat at ang existing area sa municipal or city ganoon parin, dugyot, then ang bagong development nasa outskirt na. Dapat talaga laging gawin ang redevelopment sa existing area lang at limit ang pagkuha ng bakanteng lupa sa private development. Puro subdivision sa labas, habang puro squatter sa loob

After watching this video, it inspired me to continue my study and interact with these kinds of animals myself. Not to mention the cinematography and the music that made this documentary so touching. I've always dreamed of being a biologist and explore different places but here in Davao (I used to not like it here). We, Filipinos, are truly grateful that there are biologists from abroad like Dan O'Neill who have the kindness to participate in our local wildlife preservation efforts.
    The Philippine Eagle is the most majestic amongst our national fauna. It has such noble mean with that regal look on it's face, a seemingly stern and angry look with its furrowed brow and icy stare.
    Even on screen, its mystical aura is impeccable... I can only imagine how Dan & company must have felt before this eagle at close range.
    Its sublime beauty and piercing gaze seems to have a hypnotic effect on the beholder. I was entranced... and humbled. This raptor is almost like deity... if not royalty. 😀🇵🇭

Eagle aboard bryan's boat which they interrupted that's why the poor eagle flew away and therefore lost it's way in the sea. In the early 90s, as part of a sponsorship of our Del Monte clients, I was lucky enough to see these majestic creatures in the Phil Eagle Foundation compound in Davao. I was a copywriter at McCann-Erickson, Phils., tasked to write tidbits of information about the Phil. Eagle (then more popularly known as the monkey-eating eagle) which were to be printed at the back of every Del Monte product. This was to let the public get to know these rare and endangered Philippine treasure and give way for donations.
    If I remember right, there were only a couple of adult eagles in the center at that time (for breeding) and one baby bred in captivity. We were only allowed to view the adult eagles outside their cages. The adults were truly majestic and one talon is almost as big as my whole hand. It wasn't just their size that gave them majesty, it was their whole stance. One fleeting glance from the female eagle made me cower. I remember thinking how much bigger, more majestic, and how much more intimidating the female eagle was compared to the male.
    The baby eagle was in a smaller cage, was much more docile as it wasn't raised in the wild, and was used to the presence of people so my art director and I were allowed to see it up close and take photos. We were allowed into its small cage (approximately 8-10 sq m?). I sat in a small stool possibly a meter and half away from the eagle as my art director clicked away. At some point, it got scary as it started looking my way very curiously. It turns out it was only because my watch was catching the light. I cautiously covered my watch with my other hand. That was a memorable experience! I wish I had kept all the photos.
    I did the writing and the subsequent proofreading of all the labels which bore the details of the eagle. Up to this time, even if I'm half asleep and you ask me for its scientific name, I still remember - Pithecophaga jefferyi.

      I don't think so, they had been abused for such a long time. Pricking their bodies to follow what the trainors want them to do just to entertain people, imagine the stress and pain they had to endure just to satisfy their so-called masters. Poor elephant...

    Man, this documentary brought tears to my eyes. I'm from Davao, but I haven't completely experienced the brilliance of this animal (in this video alone, you've managed to show both the brilliance and vulnerability of philippine eagles!). I went to the center once and gawked at the caged eagles but their dire situation never hit me. It just goes to show how painfully unaware most of us are about the riches our country offer and their significance.

    It's so sad to hear that the Philippine Eagle, the Philippines' national bird is at the brink of extinction. 14 years ago, back when I was in elementary school, I can clearly remember how my history teacher explains the significance of the eagle to the country's freedom.

      @@hotasianstepsister3039 I don't think this is true. I grew up in Davao and everyone cares for them, when an eagle is hurt, illegally kept, etc. they are reported and brought to the sanctuary immediately. Local people know about the eagle center, that they are endangered and they do their part in the conservation. You saw the reaction of the people in Maasin, that's how it is everywhere the eagle flies. I think Filipinos in general care about its welfare. However, it's the general lack of care for the environment of people who have access to logging that makes the impact on not just the Phil. eagle but of other animals, people, and the forests. They are the few that ruins it for everybody. You can't know how protective are the local people about them. That guy they interviewed on the beach, that community leader who first knew of the rescued bird, they were the whole community talking.
