Just a note, most people who swing instead of throw don’t do it just because they think it’s easier than throwing. They swing because they can’t throw. You do indeed generate more force and lift by swinging. Perfect for those with less upper body ability or mobility.
Anyone who can master it is way cooler than someone who just throws it too 😂 it’s my favorite hiker trick.
Thanks for the comment! That's really good point - I've since seen some videos where people can seriously launch a rock that way. That said, I'm too uncoordinated for that and would probably break my jaw.
Love this video. I am a former baseball player, so overhand throws I think will work best for me.
Thanks for this super explanation. I love the simplicity of using the stake (or stick) like that. This method will come in very handy. The bags, carabiner, and line are lots lighter -- and more comfortable in the pack -- than a canister.

Great video Tim. For us older guys, hardest part of any hang is getting the rock bag up and over the limb with out it swinging back and hitting us in the noggin. Been there and done that.

I would recommend not using an olive green bag and a dark brown line. Very difficult to find later, especially if you have chosen a tree some distance from camp
I think you have a good point, Steven! That said, I like to blend in as much as possible, so I keep all the colors neutral or earth tones. To each their own, though.
I'm going backpacking next weekend in a place with no bear boxes. I have never had to hang a bag and this was easy to understand. Thank you so much!

Couple thoughts:
1. I'm sure you just did this for the sake of the video, but don't wait until you're ready to hang your food to hang your bear line! It should be part of your initial camp chores (setting up tent, filtering water, etc). It kinda sucks trying to hang a bear line in the dark!
2. If you carry a stake bag, that makes a good rock bag.
3. And finally, bear hangs, even perfect ones, are not appropriate (or even allowed) for all areas. If in doubt, call the ranger station responsible for the area and ask.

My best bear bag story.
NH, mid October '94. Bag a good ten feet over the creek on a branch, rope wrapped around the hanging part a couple times then tied to a nearby tree. It got dark early, and we hit the tent by 7 PM.
Late night, in tent playing backgammon by flashlight with Ann. There's some grunting 30 yards away, big lungs. Some things you know how big they are by how they breath. Then a crash as two to three days worth of food for the two of us hits the ground. Apparently this bear knew about rope.
Got up the next morning to salvage what was left. Canvas bag torn open like a cheap envelope. Carton of eggs gone, carton and all just a little roughage. Steaks half frozen gone styrofoam and wrapper there, potatoes raw scattered, granola with nuts and raisins gone, a few crumbs on the ground, peanut butter jar licked empty, ham that was in a zip lock , shredded empty. Cheese wrappers, individual cheese wrappers in a neat pile in front of where the bear had obviously been sitting. Apparently this bear also knew not to cheese wrappers as well. And they are called dumb animals. How many times you gotta eat cellophane before you learn. Maybe once?
Wow, wild story! Yeah they're ridiculously smart. As a kid, I'd sit on our porch and watch them defeat my grandfathers bird feeders - no matter how he put em up, they'd always rip them down.

Love your videos!! Hope you’ll put more videos on line. You have very good skills for teaching us the essential. Would be interesting to make one for the AT technic (is it how they name it?), I mean the one with the line between two trees. Depending on the environment, it can happen that there’s no big branch around. Here in Quebec, it’s happening frequently!

Hmm, not sure which one that is, but if you're having trouble finding good branches (which happens here, too) you could look into a product called and Ursack, which may help you out. I haven't used one yet, but its basically a bear/critter proof sack that you can tie around the base of a tree. Hope that helps!

I sometimes camp in an area where the trees are kind of small because it was clear-cut about 20 years ago. I am considering a 'Bare Boxer' cannister-275 cu" size. This would be for 1-2 night outings-food for myself and my dogs. Do you know that product, and what do you think of that approach?
Hi! I've always used BearVault canisters, but same concept. Bear cans are great and do a much better job of keeping bears and critters out of your food than a bag. Just a bit on the heavy side depending on the situation - really depends on how problematic the bears in the area are. If you haven't already, you can look into an Ursack if it's a "just in case" kind of thing.

What to do with the standing end portion of your cord?
Hey Steve! Thanks for the question. It just stays on the ground. The line is thin enough that small critters can't climb it (that I've seen, anyway.) It needs to go somewhere and coiling it up or tying it to the tree trunk is an easier target for bears. Have a great weekend!
@@timbschwartz I don't live in bear country, but sometimes hang food to keep it out of the reach of squirrels. Wondered if leaving it coiled would be an issue was all...
@@stevebayley8624 Ahh gotcha. Yeah in that case, provided you're using some thin/slick line, your food should be reasonable well secured using this method. Check out samson lash-it if you haven't already.
Another option if the squirrels are particularly brilliant would be an ursack minor. Haven't used one yet but I hear good things.
