TRAPPED in Heavy Storm on Electric Motorcycle in Italy

  • And rain is just beginning…we were forced to go up Italy’s mountains after the only road down the west coast was closed due to heavy rainfall and flooding. At this point I was already socked to the bones. Going up the mountainpass temperature is dropping down to freezing and all of a sudden it’s starting to snow. This day turned into my worst nightmare on electric motorcycle or on any bike for that matter…

well done marc and marie ,you did the right thing to stop . many years ago 1967 i think going to the dragon rally in snowdonia ,three riders got killed ,blown off their bikes with high winds . another time my son and myself camped at the dragon .it was minus 11 degrees centigrade . didnt sleep a wink ,and water bottle froze by our feet in the small tent. now 74 this month so enjoy watching you opposite our log burner. best wishes to you both from the u k .

Two years ago, we went for vacations to Tropea and when I was driving started to see signs at the road about the use of chain wheels obligatory, I was thinking that is just ridiculous because we are in the South Italy, but then in Tropea I ask the people about it and then I realize that we were crossing the Apenins Mountains and sometimes snow falling. Better stop now and better check the weather forecast, good luck and take care both of you 👍🏻✊🏼

Ah, the trials and tribulation of riding a motorcycle. You don't need an excuse for not reaching a destination, and it was wise for you to stop and seek shelter. Never ride when your tired, wet, cold, flustered, etc., in addition to it being dark on wet roads in those weather conditions. It's called "Sleet", precipitation consisting of ice pellets, often mixed with rain or snow. Stay safe, the world will still be there regardless of how long the journey takes.

Marc, you are making wise decisions. However your range anxiety will only get worse as you travel away from Europe. Have you thought about a Plan "B" option? If you have room in the Jimmy you could get a small portable Honda generator (I know it runs on gas) for your riding adventures. Then if all your efforts fail at getting "juice" for Eve, you have this backup. The idea would then be to see how far you can get without having to resort to using the generator. Of course you have to be very careful traveling with a small portion of gas with you. You could have a small portable plastic container attached to the outside of the Jimmy. It may be possible to also mount the generator in the back if you can have a receiver hitch in the back of the Jimmy (don't know if possible for Jimmys). If you had this setup it could eliminate any range anxiety. Who wants to have that anxiety while traveling. Traveling is supposed to be fun. This won't be "cheating" your plan. It's always good to have a backup plan. Good luck.

Sometimes best not to travel and leave it a day or 2

@@MarcTravels Have you tried waterproof socks like Sealskins? I have found them indispensable for when the boots eventually start letting the water in. If rain is expected I use them over a thinner sock to also help keep warm. Similarly I always use a pair of glove liners, silk is best. Again it is an extra layer against the cold, makes the inside of your riding glove less clammy and it's easier to get them on and off without turning the fingers inside out. Better to wait it out if you can, it"s only a short break in a long, long journey, and staying safe is paramount.

@@TubeOrNotTube helmets with visors that can take pinlock inserts are a worthwhile investment to prevent fogging up. Alternative is a stick on insert like Marc has. Variable quality on those. An Italian company called Raleri makes really good ones as long as you choose the right size but they have good advice on that on their website. Another good addition for cold days is a breath deflector which velcroes into the helmet and covers the nose. Respro Foggy is a good one but don't know if you can get them in US. Of course if you have to wear spectacles that's a whole other problem

In the UK when a road is closed, they put diversion signs up so you can still get to where you need to go. The signs are yellow - could those yellow signs you couldn't read have been giving you directions? Also, have you considered using Waze? They are owned by Google, but I think it gives you better real-time information, including road closures!

Italy rarely closes roads in the mountains. They don't have glaciers in the mountains like in the northern countries. I remember near Monaco there was a problem with icing on the mountains and no winter tires for any other vehicles. Also, irregular weather conditions in Italy from January to April. You just have to take a different route over the mountains. Roads a lot. there is regular movement in the village of locals in the mountains. Not so crazy.

I have ridden in thick snow on the ground for 5 hours in my youth on a small motorcycle but would not attempt to do that now especially on a large electric bike.

Better safe than sorry, never ride/drive beyond your envelop and confort, because this where you make mistakes. Can't always be "peachy". Thanks for sharing the good and the not so good part of the travel. Great video as usual.

Hmmm ..I think i may have got a collapsible trailer to put in the jimmy for emergency's...The odd few hours on safety grounds does not defeat the idea of taking the bike round the world..

I don't know why you haven't got an electric vest. They completely cancel the cold out. I take my hat off to you riding in these conditions, even if you're not on board the big thumper, the reason I was attracted to this channel in the first place. On the subject of big thumpers, I recently bought a 'modern' but bigger version of my old Yamaha XT500. It's a kind of XT500 meets Harley Sportster: Yamaha SCR950. It's a great ride.
    Entertaining video.

Just a bad day, will you be back on a nice sunny day again.
Marc have you ever thought about any solution to be able to tow the bike with the Suzuki? It could be useful in some situations or remote areas where riding a motorcycle could be too dangerous, or in a case like this where you suddenly find roads closed and risk being left with a dry battery. This solution could be a nice backup.

I also bought an electric bike 1.5 years ago. Not as good as the ZERO, but with a range of about 160-190km. I go with her on shorter trips and admire how you commute to the charging points for the last few percent of energy. I know what nerves are. I ride even in winter, below 5 degrees it starts to be very uncomfortable, not to mention rain or snow. This is really dangerous.. :-).
What is the city where you ended up? Super videos, both cross fingers!!!

Marc, what a hell of a trip it is. You made the right choice when you decided to stop, it's very dangerous. But let me tell you how surprised I am with your protective equipment. I don't think it's appropriate for such a trip. I'm sorry to be giving an opinion like this, but you want to make a turn around the world with the minimum expense of money, that's fine, but you have to invest in high quality equipment, I can't believe your suit and your gloves are hot enough for the conditions. Think about it. You should put on warmed fists and wear heated gloves. Your safety also depends on your physical condition while you are driving, and with this body cold you have your reflexes decreased. And that doesn't make sense for the risks you take. Hug

Marc sorry about such a hard experience. Italy is a mountain country, foreigners just think of it as sun beach and warmth. Winter is hard, also in the south and especially in the higher mountains. You have not been lucky with the weather its very cold everywhere in Italy right now.

Hi Marc, Been watching for a while. I like your idea of riding an electric motorcycle around the world. If you get to Oregon, USA, we've got a nice place for you to stay out in the country close to Portland, Oregon. My wife and I spent about 45 years traveling around America in seven different motorhomes. I've also done a lot of motorcycling too. I can tell you that what you are trying to do is just not going to work. You are going to have NO access to electrical hookups in many third world countries. The solution is for Marie to tow a small lightweight quality trailer. When you run out of power (and you will) or have terrible weather (very very dangerous riding), put your bike on the trailer and continue on in the car. Nobody will give you a hard time for doing a small portion of your trip in the car. If you have an accident, the bike rider is almost always the loser! Getting killed or spending months in a hospital will not only ruin your plans but really hurt you financially. My wife and I like you guys. You seem like very nice folks. Please be safe and be careful. I've lost friends in bike accidents. I want you guys to be SAFE! Best wishes....Phil and Greta S

What a ride! definitely time to seek a safe harbour. Have a nice warm night and hope it's better in the morning. I hope you're not going to be in the Southern Hemisphere when it's their winter too?
