I remember when I got out of the military and returned home to Texas in 1992, the pain of losing Stevie Ray just two years earlier, my wife and I moved to Austin and these guys carried the flame and it was SO great to watch and see! When I first heard them, I had no idea Tommy and Chris were in this band. My IPOD, IPhone and CD player all has their music on them. Love it!
Man this is insanely good. Saw these guys when they toured this album and it was hands down one of the best shows I have ever seen, having seen many. Everything about this is right and tight. Killer vocal, ditto on the guitar work, and the rhythm section is so freakin' on. I always loved Chris Layton's drum sound as well as his super smooth in the pocket style. I remember the show and thinking this is exactly how a band should sound. Rock 'n' Roll 101 stuff.
Why doesn't anyone cool like this come to Lubbock!! These guys always go to Dallas and Ausin like those were the only two places on Earth! Granted I love this band even though they're not together anymore officially, but none of them want to come to Lubbock. All we get over here is a bunch of country bands and singers. Even if I'm the only one there I'll make it worth their time. DB II is an AWESOME guitarist and songwriter btw!!! Luckily, Indigenous still remembers us!!
I've Interviewed Doyle several times & I've interviewed Charlie (who was just incredible regaling me with working in Austin as a kid in all the blues clubs with SRV, W.C. Clark, with The Rolling Stones, Dylan), & just so underrated as is Doyle. Two amazing & dazzling singer, songwriter, guitarists, both hailing from Texas!
Yeah these guys are frightening live, saw them back in the 90's one of the better shows I have seen. It was freakin' guitar clinic, the whole line up works so very, very well together.
Another band that we love here in Austin which includes Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon is Storyville.......another Austin, Tx. band that's full of talent. "Good Day For The Blues"...great song! GBT
Saw these guys in their day, fantastic one of the better sows I have ever seen and I've seen quite a few. It was a freakin' guitar clinic, Doyle was on fire - and Charlie Sexton is a killer front man. It's a crime they only released one album.
This one got by me completely. Just stumbled onto it. What a great sound! This hurts, but I used to see his father, a drummer, at a club named The Catacombs ... and the guitar player was Jimmie Vaughn. Could he ever play in those days. Must have been all of 17 or so. I believe more folks knew Stevie Ray than knew about Jimmie for quite awhile. Getting old sucks .....
It does ~ however it beats the alternative & many are denied the luxury... jus' sayin' bruh'.... & ya, this band's been in my top 5 since it came out.. smokin'...... el Primo. ] -)
Charlie's song is just epic thunder. Best performance Austin City Limits ever did was this special Double Trouble & Friends prommoting DT's 2001 sole album Been A Long Time. With Charlie & Doyle here, it really was the Arc Angels reunion & this performance was IMO their very best, just full of passion, fire, all of Charlie's emotional depth & personal reflectiveness which inspired his writing this autobiographical song & Doyle was just on fire. Chris & Tommy & Reece Wynans were all just amazing
That's one of the best things about this performance. I've always been a big Arc Angels fan, but to see these guys come back together for this performance and see how true professionals play together is incredible. They are locked in!
Hey braddyboy82!! Yea you!! You know I have to laugh when people make comments like this. Chris Layton's not a good drummer? Oh why? Because he's a good solid drummer and not flashy? Because he does the job and keeps perfect time? All drummers are not John Bonham or Neil Peart...If they were the world would be pretty boring! Learn to appreciate the musicians for the talent they DO have and stop criticizing them for not living up to something you probably couldn't do anyway!
to John Bam - yes, this is ACL, aired 2/21/2001, and listed as Double Trouble as the artist with an Arc Angels reunion for a couple of tunes. Sad there are no more bands like this. . .
I've only been playing guitar for 36 years and no doubt still have a lot to learn, but guitar player preference is purely a matter of personal taste. Give me Doyle Bramhall any day of the week.
I have interviewed BOTH Charlie & Doyle & each is very underrated & talented as singers, songwriters, & multi-instrumentalists/guitarists. (Search vintage guitar magazine & guitar international magazine for my interviews arlene r. weiss with oth Charlie & Doyle). This ACL was a superb showcase of their talents as well as DT & the toast of Austin music. Charlie is touring again with Dylan these days & has worked w/ Bob many times over the last 2 decades.
Came across this after going down yet another TH-cam rabbit hole. I still remember where I was when I heard about SRV's death. I was so excited when I heard about these guys, and boy did not disappoint! It's too bad Doyle's drug problems brought them down. Just saw Marcus King last night - he's got the same mojo going on - killer guitar and a killer backing band.
I LOVE SRV and the them. But I'll tell you this.Saw them live here in ST. Louis last yr, one of the WORST "concerts" I have ever, EVER seen. It as like a sound check.Sexton kept tripping on the guitar wires, just HORRID. Didnt seem like they were into it at all. Sad, Back in the day when Doyle was on drugs, they were AWESOME. . SO GOOD at one point in time. I think their debut album, only studio album, is ONE of the best debut albums ever, along with GNR's appetite for destruction.
This is awesome!!!! The drummer sucks though. I know he was SRV's guy, but he's not that good. Other than him, wow, what a song and performance!! Doyle tears it up here!!!!
I saw them at the Denton Jazz fest this past year. They played a short show and at the end they put down their instruments and ran off the stage without saying a word. Every one in the crowd kind of looked at each other in confusion, should we go home now? That was unprofessional stage presence.
A mother has her baby boys and a father Doesn't call And from this saddening parody Someone will have to crawl Yes crawl through all the dark memories Everyone and all 'Cause there's just one way That you can stand Too many ways to fall All we have is here and now Tomorrow may not come true There's a million people who walk this ground Who might steal your wish from you A million people maybe not A human one at all There's just one way that we can stand Too many ways to fall Well they might be on the fire escape They might be down the hall They might be watching every Move you make Through the pinhole in the wall They're sworn to their duty And they stand so proud and tall They say it's nothing personal It's just a job that's all The mother says now baby boy You're gonna have to choose There's good and evil, love and greed And they're all inside of you And just as sure as gravity No one escapes the law 'Cause there's just one way That we can stand Too many ways to fall So when you wake up in the bushes Passed out on the lawn And suddenly it dawns on you That mother wasn't wrong It all comes back like déjà vu You just can't help but recall 'Cause there's just one way That we can stand Too many ways to fall Songwriters: Charlie Sexton, Steven M. Very talented players, no doubt, but, as I watch this I realize how very many bands thought it was enough just to stand on a stage, play guitars and sing. It's interesting to guitar geeks, like me, but it's not surprising this didn't set the World on fire.
@eagle0468 Gee, I don't recall saying that Neil Peart was a John Bonham. That is like comparing apples and oranges. They are both exceptional drummers in their own right. If you are suggesting that Bonzo is/was a superior drummer to Peart then you are missing the whole point of my comment which was to try to get people to stop placing artists/musicians one above the other, give credit where credit is due and appreciate each talent for what it is.
@braddyboy82 Hey you know I have to laugh when people make comments like this. Chris Layton's not a good drummer? Oh why? Because he's a good solid drummer and not flashy? Because he does the job and keeps perfect time? Oh well that's terrible!! WTF
The guitar work is EPIC. And Charlie showcases all he's got!!! OMG..
😎✌🇦🇺❤❤❤❤❤
Hey from Louisiana. I saw ARC Angels and later
Love it!
I went to see Them at Steamboat in the day- the Stones had played in town and Ron woods and Charlie Watts were there to hear them play. Magical!
Still awesome! Saw them last year in Dallas with Santana 👍🏿
The Ultimate Modern Blues Rock Band Keeping the Dream Alive, Man can these Guy's Write....
you nailed it -- there's not a bad track on that album! That band was a dream team.
I've loved this band since the 90's awesome as ever. This is what music should sound like!
One of the best rock and roll songs of anytime by anyone ever.
Man this is insanely good. Saw these guys when they toured this album and it was hands down one of the best shows I have ever seen, having seen many. Everything about this is right and tight. I never tire of this song!...It's a wonder, what happened?...great band...I yearn for more material!
I agree. The album, Arc Angels still rocks! Powerful masterpiece :)

I have listened to this so many times and it still gets better every time
Guyfidelity, I saw them too back then. They put on one hell of a show. Amazing the music that came out of that band.
Best version I've found! Have it at the top of my favorites screen to play at the click of a button and I'm 60!
one of the greatest bands!
You can't teach the truth......... nor can anyone bridle it..... great musicians... A killer rhythm section..........
i saw them supporting eric clapton in the echo arena in liverpool they were very good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw them too in Londen at the Bush Hall. I was lucky to met them after the gig!
Arc Angels rules!!!!
Yeah these guys are frightening live, saw them back in the 90's one of the better shows I have seen. It was freakin' guitar clinic, the whole line up works so very, very well together.

Drivin around ATX in the 90s...

They back!

I got to see them twice in the 90's, and it wasn't enough, they kicked azzz!
Watch how they communicate for the changes , for a musician, very cool. That's the way to do it. Great job Guys.
That's one of the best things about this performance. I've always been a big Arc Angels fan, but to see these guys come back together for this performance and see how true professionals play together is incredible. They are locked in!
I love this band!
I'm speechless!!! un-fvkin-believable!!
no comparison, Doyle all the way! Arc Angels are an Austin jewel!!!!!
We like them downunda too
Hey braddyboy82!! Yea you!! You know I have to laugh when people make comments like this. Chris Layton's not a good drummer? Oh why? Because he's a good solid drummer and not flashy? One bad ass song and band! Love this Song!!!
to John Bam - yes, this is ACL, aired 2/21/2001, and listed as Double Trouble as the artist with an Arc Angels reunion for a couple of tunes. Sad there are no more bands like this. . .
Tommy Shannon grinning at Doyle's playing at 2:08 says it all - epic
And the reunion is on!!
I'm seeing them with clapton tonight
really excited :D
GOOD JAM!! Oh YEAH!
Badass Song.
Badass jam!
god what a great band, just found out about them one week ago via youtube now I can't stop listening to them
awesome band !
Killer footage! thanks for posting.
I lived there from 82-86. Boom would be correct. Hard.
Such a great tribute album to SRV its way under rated these guys wrote the book on Texas R&B
I've only been playing guitar for 36 years and no doubt still have a lot to learn, but guitar player preference is purely a matter of personal taste.
Give me Doyle Bramhall any day of the week.
this band is killer!

Crazy seeing Doyles '64 Strat looking pristine! This must have been right around the time he bought it from Norms to record Welcome with.
They should have put out another album.
absolutely fantastic....great band....to bad they didnt couldnt put aside the differences...
It just kicks!!
My 2002 Interview with Charlie is now up on my page! :D
Incredible Band!
Wow, I just noticed the lead guitar player is an upside down lefty. High E on top. That trips me out. Rare to see. Either way, he sounds awesome.
Doyle Bramhall II --- from rock Royalty. Great guitar --- toured with Roger Waters...made you say, "David Gil - WHO?
Unreal...so darn great!
Nice post. This must be post SRV. Early 90s.
@mgommer1 and Neil Peart wasn't a John Boham. Anyway, Chris Layton is an exceptionally talented drummer.
Came across this after going down yet another TH-cam rabbit hole. I still remember where I was when I heard about SRV's death. Super groupe !
BigMama §:-)
yeah Guns Up man! I still wish they would come to Lubbock though. :(
shit i can't get enough of this
Tommy Shannon is with the band.
I saw Bramhall in Roger Waters' band - he pretty amazing. Made you forget about Gilmour.....almost.
Gilmour who?
Tommy Shannon & Chris Layton!
I have 2 songs I say are my favorite of all time. This one and "Drive" by Joe Bonamassa. It just depends on which one I'm listening to at the time.
Diamond In A Rough... XOXOXO
AA just absolutely killed - post-mortem in Austin City!

11 more days until there dec 27th concert in austin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE SRV and the them. But I'll tell you this.Saw them live here in ST. Louis last yr, one of the WORST "concerts" I have ever, EVER seen. love that sh*t!!
DAMN!!!!!! :)))))
This is awesome!!!!
The drummer sucks though. I know he was SRV's guy, but he's not that good.
Other than him, wow, what a song and performance!! Doyle tears it up here!!!!
How about a new album and tour....with John Mayer on board?
me too
I saw them at the Denton Jazz fest this past year. They played a short show and at the end they put down their instruments and ran off the stage without saying a word. Every one in the crowd kind of looked at each other in confusion, should we go home now? That was unprofessional stage presence.
mgommer1 Stevie Ray liked his drumming, so .... ok, argue
Saw them with clapton. I was going to post a video but the quality wasnt great. There god. But not as good as clapton.
A mother has her baby boys and a father
Doesn't call
And from this saddening parody
Someone will have to crawl
Yes crawl through all the dark memories
Everyone and all
'Cause there's just one way
That you can stand
Too many ways to fall
All we have is here and now
Tomorrow may not come true
There's a million people who walk this ground
Who might steal your wish from you
A million people maybe not
A human one at all
There's just one way that we can stand
Too many ways to fall
Well they might be on the fire escape
They might be down the hall
They might be watching every
Move you make
Through the pinhole in the wall
They're sworn to their duty
And they stand so proud and tall
They say it's nothing personal
It's just a job that's all
The mother says now baby boy
You're gonna have to choose
There's good and evil, love and greed
And they're all inside of you
And just as sure as gravity
No one escapes the law
'Cause there's just one way
That we can stand
Too many ways to fall
So when you wake up in the bushes
Passed out on the lawn
And suddenly it dawns on you
That mother wasn't wrong
It all comes back like déjà vu
You just can't help but recall
'Cause there's just one way
That we can stand
Too many ways to fall

@TheRoko67......You are right brother.
wish they could have gong further, sorry
Very talented players, no doubt, but, as I watch this I realize how very many bands thought it was enough just to stand on a stage, play guitars and sing. It's interesting to guitar geeks, like me, but it's not surprising this didn't set the World on fire.

Both are correct

Not really a reunion if you ask me- no mention of Tommy Shannon rejoining the band in the press release.
@braddyboy82 Hey you know I have to laugh when people make comments like this. Chris Layton's not a good drummer? Oh why? Because he's a good solid drummer and not flashy? Because he does the job and keeps perfect time? Oh well that's terrible!! WTF
If you think Bramhall is in Bonamassa's league ou haven't been playing guitar that long.
heroin is bad
H is bad
Singer looks a little too much like John Mayer, and that's never a good thing. Can't go wrong with Whipper Layton on drums though.
