  • The carriage passes the Palace with the Queen waiting. She bows as Diana, her former daughter-in-law's, coffin passes.
A member of the public starts playing a Scottish lament on a set of bagpipes and charity workers who will later walk behind the procession start to gather.

Bowing to Diana's coffin must have had taken a lot of courage, knowing the Queen's stiff attitude. This alone put Diana in history books, and established her as an unquestionable influence on the monarchy's image today.

I watch her videos and think to myself, what if she was still alive ? this world would have been a better place to live. I love u so much Diana, I miss you and I hope and pray you are resting in peace in heaven ! :'(

I, personally, deeply admired the Queen's gesture of bowing as Diana's coffin passed by her. It was a wonderful act of respect. The Queen, generally and typically, is always the one to whom people bow to, but in this instance she did so to Diana. You may also have noticed that the Queen was the first to bow and the majority of the other members of the Royal Family and those within her immediate physical surroundings followed her example by bowing also. On another matter, I would also like to respond to the claims some have made here that the Queen and Diana were enemies. Truth be told, they were far from it. At the very beginning, prior to the marriage, the Queen rejoiced in the idea of having Diana to be her daughter-in-law. Diana also had a genuine affection for her mother-in-law, called her "Mama" and would enquire at many opportunities as to when she would be able to have lunch or dinner with the Queen, of which the Queen was always happy. When Diana was having extreme difficulty due to the constant presence and pressure of the press, the Queen invited many members of the press before her and made a request to them that they allow Diana some privacy and space. When Charles and Diana would clash, the Queen always did her best to understand Diana and never allied with Charles against her. She attempted to assist Charles and Diana solve their differences by inviting both of them to join her and Prince Philip in private, family discussions. The only time that the Queen was clearly put off was when Diana's Panorama interview with Martin Bashir got broadcasted. The Queen expressed to Diana in a letter that a formal divorce was necessary but expressed herself in a gentle, sympathetic manner (calling her "Dearest Diana" and ending with "Love from Mama"). Even after the separation, Diana continued to phone the Queen and the Queen continued to write many letters to her. Diana felt that the Queen only had the best of intentions and was trying to help. Diana even once exclaimed, "Oh, I would really love to give my mother-in-law a hug!" When the Queen paid tribute to Diana with the live television broadcast, she stated (off-screen) that she firmly believed every single word within her speech. I think the claims made that the Queen and Diana despised each other only originate from the conniving ways of the press and how the public always wants to hear the juicy aspects of family affairs, even though it could be highly exaggerated or completely fabricated altogether. On a separate note, if the Queen ever appeared to be or is thought to have been unfeeling and far too reserved immediately after Diana's death, keep in mind - we couldn't expect anything more of her. The Queen is not the type of person nor is she in the position to display dramatic bouts of emotion and shed tears. She is an intensely private person and formality is essential within her public role and duty as the Queen.

I think one historian said it right when he said "Diana brought the monarchy to it's knees". This was closest the Queen ever came to being truly hated by her people. Even in death Diana made an impact on the monarchy with the Queen bowing her head to the Princess of Wales' coffin. Truly extraordinary gesture from the Queen, yet there was no true meaning behind it besides trying to appease the people.

Twenty years passed and the beloved English princess was not forgotten as many thought. Sadly the beautiful princess had a very fast passage in this world, but the time she lived was enough to fulfill her mission, and what a beautiful mission! He helped the poor, broke prejudice and pride, loved his subjects as a fairy tale princess. She was loved by everyone, but she was not loved enough by the person who ever wished to be loved. The fairy tale of Diana does not end with happy ending, but she leaves many happy moments to be remembered. You left a piece of her to the world... His beloved sons, the beautiful Princes William and Henry. Twenty years have passed and Diana will forever be the princess of the people.

I couldn't imagine losing my mom at that age. I know I hugged my mom a lot on that day. Though now it's been a year since my mom died. It still hurts. No matter how long it's been.

@dinah19691 The Duchess of York looked absolutely destroyed. She and Diana, Princess of Wales were the only two, aside from The Duchess of Kent, who knew what it was to live as women with sensitive emotions within the Royal Family. It was simply the end of an era for all of them. Terribly, terribly sad. The Duchess of York is fortunate that she has kept such positive relations with The Duke of York, she still has someone who loves her. Diana, it seems, didn't have that aside from her dear boys.

The Queen underestimated the love of the world for just one person, to whom she was so readily to be rid of. I do believe Tony Blair saved the monarch on this day, she may not have went willingly to pay respect, however she did. I do hope that 10 years later the world has healed from such a loss. When seeing her boys in the news, interent, or etc... Her death afforded them some privacy in their lives they may not have had. She was truly everything a person could be or should be. Di 4ever loved.

I agree with you. I thought it was horrible how they tried to paint her as uncaring, while all she and Philip were doing was looking after the boys. Remember Charles went to Paris to accompany Diana home, so it was left to them to console them. No one seemed to consider her jobs as grandmother more important than her job as Queen at that time...

As it turns out, analysis of the wreck of the car showed that Trevor's seatbelt was fully retracted at the moment of impact, they could tell by the damage to it. It was just an assumption made by a journalist at the time that he had his belt on and was repeated by other journalists who equally weren't in a position to check.

She is of course missed but we shouldn't blame the Royal family especially not the Queen. Then queen was very fond of Diana and The only reason that HM took Diana's Title of Her Royal Highness is because her advisors advised her that it would be improper and not correct in terms of protocol
