In this video clip from SSE Music's December 3rd, 2009 Jimmy Chamberlin drum clinic, Jimmy talks about the importance of maintaining a unique musical identity. Check us out at www.ssemusic.com!
I've always admired Jimmy since I first heard The Pumpkins back when Gish came out and the thing I liked about his drumming is exactly what he talks about here - Identity! You can tell it's him just by the way he plays, he has his own unique style. Very creative and solid without going 'over the top'. One of my favourite drummers.
He is one of the most distinctive drummers I've ever heard. I once heard a song called Slip Slide Melting on The Crow Soundtrack, and decided to check out the album, and band it originated from (Merge-For Love Not Lisa). I get 6 tracks in to the album, but this particular track caught my ear, because I knew it was Jimmy on the drums. I could pick him out blind folded, and I love him for it.
Jimmy is one of my biggest influences. I remember when Gish came out and my friends in the music business all said that he was a one-trick pony. Jimmy sounds like Jimmy because he IS Jimmy...but you dig under the surface and get inside the beats (and inside his head a little) and there are so, so many layers of complexity. Simply beautiful. Thank you Jimmy.
He is the best rock drummer ever IMO. Above the rest: Ringo, Dave Grohl, Bonham, Moon... I like him better. His sound is so groovy, so filled with nuance and yet sheer power...The best.
@@PMurray2694 I agree. Don't get me wrong Dave is a great drummer and all around musician but behind the kit he seems limited. Jimmy is just on another level as far as talent and ability. He doesn't seem limited or restricted to bring a song to another level.
@@FusicPool There a slew of great drummers out there. You can not compare one to the other because like Jimmy said, your own identity is what makes you unique. Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, Thomas Lang, Mike Portnoy, Terry Bozzio, Ginger Baker, and yes Jimmy Chamberlin are/were all amazing drummers, but I would NEVER compare them against each other because each one of them bring something different to the table.
Some great wise words by Jimmy, I like his drumming very much, and his music with his band Complex, awesome !!! He's a Rock drummer I believe, but he did his homework, and he's very AWARE of the drum legend, I think that Jimmy is a Jazz lover. :-)
I just love jimmy. Iam so luckily I found the pumpkins. Grohl was my favorite drummer. Once I heard " I still believe, I can not be saved" I yelled at my mom " who is this!" " Mom! Do you know this" I had my hands on the dash board, just waiting to go home to find them. Anyway, I could always play foo fighters and nirvana. But once jimmy entered my vocabulary i was confused. How do you do that. I spent day and after month after months. I ran thru the albums on drums and guitar. Guitar is my favorite instrument I play. So the pumpkins just humbled me. But the drums hahah I couldn't do it. So where otherrnwould of gave up. I played the songs, I watched jimmy, I kept playing even tho it was wrong. But never stopped trying. Jimmy opened the door for me to grow. So I play like jimmy, every beat i play is hi hats doing quarter notes and a little but l swing on a 1 N A, 2 N A But I then I discovered the flaming lips and Steven Drozd was the fucking man. So I incorporate jimmy,,Drozd,Grohl into what I do. Good musicians imitate GREAT musicians steal.
I've been a gigging musician for over twenty years and I totally agree with what he says toward the end about drummers being humble and being like a family. I've met a few drummers in my day that were self-absorbed cocky assholes....guess how many guitarists and singers i've met like that...uhhhh...pretty much all of them lol (btw i'm a guitarist hahaha!)
@equallyeasilyfuqyou sorry but I have to disagree completely, I think he seems very grounded, down to earth and very appreciative of where he is in his life... great drummer too.

Thanks for all the comments, folks! Jimmy was a great clinician and a truly warm human being. We were lucky to host him.

One of the best drummers for me. Chamberlin you rock
Incredible. So inspiring, so eloquent and thoughtful. My greatest inspiration and influence in drumming.

+Fer Abra you neglected to say Neil Pearte, that's probably because he isn't as good as Neil Pearte, but he's still one of the best.
He’s head and shoulders above Peart, and Peart is a great drummer.
Jimmy Chamberlin is my favorite also. He makes complexity look simple.
