Very informative It seems as though there are very few craftsmen in the deck building space and I appreciate your attention to detail. Learned several things that I will be using going forward. Thank you for an excellent tutorial!
You guy's do excellent work! Have a question when your deck is over 3 feet high and your not anchored to house or tied in are you concerned with movement or sway in deck frame ?
Thanks for your question! Here's a response from Mike: "The taller the deck is off the surface of the ground the more lateral movement you can get when it's free-standing and not attached to the house. The American Wood Council DCA6 deck guide provides a prescriptive detail for bracing. Use 2x4 braces attached between the outside posts and the beams and joists. The overlap/fastening points are 24 in. from the inside corner of the framing - an example of that is the corner where the bottom of the beam meets the edge of the post. Measure along the bottom of the beam 24 in. and measure down the post 24 in. Center a 2x4 on those points and drive a screw into the post and the beam. Same for joists and posts. You can also use the house as an anchor and still have it free-standing by using lateral load connectors. Build a free-standing deck and use one of the lateral load hardware products like Simpson StrongTie DTT2Z, DTT1Z or FastenMaster LTS to fasten a couple of deck joists to the house joists or wall top plate."
I use festool dominos and ca glue on all boarder boards the joints stay nice and tight. I also use deckorators decking which is a much better product trex is junk.
Great Lesson!
