CONGRATULATIONS. You've unlocked a secret!
secret: 𝔂𝓸𝓾'𝓻𝓮 𝓫𝓮𝓪𝓾𝓽𝓲𝓯𝓾𝓵
my parents (a black and white interracial couple) saw the og cast on broadway and have NEVER stopped talking about how awe-inspiring and mind blowing the production was!!
That's such a bragging right to say they saw the OG cast wow!!!
@@taylorcassidyjit really is!! and they do 😂
The production is actually insane like what?!??
Thank you so much!!!
As a black guy I remember first seeing the movie one evening (on Juneteenth no less) and was immediately fascinated and opted to watch it right away. When I watched Stephanie Mill’s performance, I fell further in love. This show was and will be everything for me and so many other black people. Great Video!
Thank you so much!! Also watching The Wiz on Juneteenth is golden lol.
SO MANY CONGRATS TO YOUR SISTER AND YOU!!!!
THANK YOU !!!!
damn 6:51 "if you don't take the time to even try to understand [the wiz, the culture, the history, etc] then you actually aren't qualified to critique this piece of work" was LOUD! I'm super interested in the afrofuturist and surrealist themes and images in The Wiz movie, so it's awesome the show's back on Broadway. Thanks for highlighting and celebrating this awesome piece of black art; the depth, research, humor, and range of your videos are top-tier!
I'm so glad you enjoyed!! And thank you for noticing!!
I saw the movie version of the Wiz for the first time in college and I found Dorothy's anxiety quite relatable, especially around being in the city. I'm not really a theatre kid either, but I do enjoy musicals and I love seeing behind the scenes look at productions. I also 100% agree that good critique comes from those who can acknowledge that everyone has biases and knows when their voice might not be needed.
Yes!! I related with the same sentiments in the movie. Thank you for watching!!
This was awesome! Thank you so much for the work you put in to putting us on to our culture, what we might be missing, and what is undeniable.
Also, the NPR tiny desk was fire. I hope there will be a traveling tour of The Wiz.
Thank you so much!!! I'm glad you're enjoying it!! Also I agree the Tiny Desk ate DOWN
You even got the cast this video is awesome im glad it got reccomended 🎉
Hope you enjoyed it!
I was learning about the art of adaptations in film school and had to compare the Wizard of Oz to the Wiz. I think the most important feature discovered was with the time these films were invented and how they reflect. The OG Oz is a colorful escape from the Great Depression. Meanwhile, the Wiz reflects a lot of the esthetics of the time while also being a lot more accurate the novels that inspired the entire franchise. It's very interesting.
Really!! I didn't know that. That makes me love it even more lol.
I say this often, but the subway scene had me shook for 20+ years.
LMAOOO... to this day when I take the train I'm looking behind my back
the point about bway having black stories curated to cater to white audiences is so spot on. While the words may be "to broaden mainstream appeal" that usually means upper/upper middle class white audiences.
I think about how one of the most successful shows rn with a black female protagonist, & Juliet, is likely popular because blackness is simply not written into her character. While her role was originated by a black actress and continues being cast as such,,,her character is in a way raceless (i also believe she gets u/s by non-black performers). While I don't think that in any way marks down the show (cause come on. black women deserve to head a show and portray a staple romantic role like Juliet). I think it speaks to the way that THIS version of blackness (devoid of racialization but more importantly black culture) is the most Broadway and Broadway audiences can handle rn. (in terms of a popular, "long-running" show)

PS this is super simplified lmao cause there are so many other variables.
PPS the story of Ain't No Mo (aka the Shubert Org shutting down an unapologetically black viral, selling out bway show (with celebrity backing) was sketchy af

Finally; thank you for this wonderfully researched video. The Wiz is such a brilliant show that I wish got discussed more often. The afro-futuristic elements have not only stood the test of time but only gotten dreamier. The film holds a dear place in my heart as the first musical I watched that wasn't just white folks caroling. I may be traumatized by my middle school's white production of the wiz but to this day it still feel so joyous and magical.
first of all thank you for your thorough and well thought out comment!! Second, that's very interesting... I didn't know about the sketchy closing of Ain't No Mo... I just knew it was really popular and then suddenly it wasn't on anymore. Ima have to learn more about it!!
I did an assignment for a theater class over The Wiz and one of my paragraphs was entirely about how white critics just did not understand the impact of this production. I'm so glad more people are analyzing and dissecting it because it is iconic!
How cool you were able to do a project on that. I agree with you!!
Yes! Content about my favorite movie of all time...thank you🥰
My pleasure!!
Oh, that was your sister? I was confused looking at the screen like it's her, but it's NOT her 😂
Yes!!! My sistah
I loved musicals as a kid and it was my moms friend who said “oh you’ll love this one” and my goodness my perspective changed on what it meant to be a black performer in a theatrical setting❤
I love that!!
Oh so the whole family is talented- got it.
