Churchill is in my top 4 world leaders throughout history. I love his personality and his drive to defend his nation no matter the cost. Thanks for sharing this video and Merry Christmas to you.
Please, we must remember that both Churchill and Roosevelt were humans such as you and I. We were lucky to have them where they were when they were, but remember that they had their flaws and foibles like everybody else. If we turn them into saints, how will we really understand them, or learn what mistakes of theirs we need to avoid?
@@georgettewolf6743 you are correct, everyone has their flaws. Sometimes it is one's flaws that make them interesting. Certainly no sainthood /worship here. I just find him very intriguing.
@Blckdog Excavator I think one of the many elements I love about Churchill is how as a youth and young man he was an underachiever. Then grew into one of the greatest men of the 20th century.
There is no substantive evidence that Churchill made this remark. The saying is listed in the comprehensive quotation collection “Churchill by Himself” in a special appendix called “Red Herrings: False Attributions”.
Thank you for describing this fateful meeting. It is not often we get to see the wheels of war actually turning between two allied nations I think. What a fateful time it was. Your telling of this episode at such a time reminds us that 'the price of freedom is eternal vigilance'. Nonetheless, as Christmas comes into view, may I wish you a very happy Christmas and all the very best for the New Year of 2024. Love from the UK
Churchill said in his speech to Parliament after news of Pearl Harbor reached London that there was no need to debate whether to support the US in the Pacific (something he had actually pledged to FDR before the attack) since the Japanese High Command had in fact declared war on Britain simultaneously, meaning they needed to act as quickly as possible to protect their own interests. IIRC Singapore and others were already under vicious attack by that time.
@@thunderbird1921 There were various targets hit almost simultaneously with pearl throughout the South Pacific. Dont recall which off the top of my head but Singapore was probably one of them.
And only if we had citizens today like we had then. My grandparents / parents went through 2 works wars, the Great Depression, Korean War and Vietnam, lived in little houses without insulation and poor coal heat, no air conditioning or television- today all you hear is complaining no matter how good people have in this country.
We have Zelenskyy. Churchill was no Zelenskyy. He would never have had the courage to outlaw Lutheranism, arrest his political opponents or ban any criticism.
Most definitely "history worth remembering," thank you for sharing the story; it was not one I had heard before. Merry Christmas to all and many thanks to THG crew!
Is there a subtle warning in The History Guy's Christmas message that though the current times seem dark, there was a much darker time 81 years ago? Yet the world survived, so there is hope for our future as well. Merry Christmas to all and pray for a better tomorrow.
No matter when you live, there are always a dark time ahead. The best we can do is live our lives to the fullest and enjoy the company of our fellows. Merry Christmas to all and wishing a brighter future to our young.
Stepping from the tub, a VERY naked Churchill was standing in his bed room, when FDR rolled in without knocking(as was the congenial atmosphere then between them). WC stood there in his splendor and said,"So you see now Mr President, I have nothing to hide." Churchill was a great man and THE man for the hour of need, Britain found itself in. Always wished for a cool uncle like him. But then again, he WAS everyone's uncle Winston. Merry Christmas to all. Thank you History Guy.
Oh My! this is a wonderful presentation of a "moment" in history long forgotten; yet, wholly important to life as we know it today. I commend your research and perspective that represents both the meat (the cheers of Congress thrusting the opinion of the war to relevant to the United States and a worthy undertaking) and the fat (the revealing of Churchill's lavish eccentricity). This presentation ranks at the top of my favorites of all your videos. Thank you!
There's a story where Churchill was staying at the White House whilst on a visit or a book tour. He liked to sleep naked, and one night, he was awoken by something or needed to do something. And in his confusion, stepped outside of his room, giving his American protective guards something that they'd never see in a lifetime of guarding a guest.
I thought I remembered this anecdote about Churchill. I understand Eleanor almost blew a gasket when she found out and Franklin got the sharp edge of her tongue about it.
Another anecdote (true or not) was when Churchill offended on officials wife. And she said "If you were my husband I would put poison in your tea!" To which Churchill responded, "And if you were my wife I would gladly drink that tea!"
Given the current War in Europe, messages from the past can remind us what really matters for future. Your video really does this. Thank you! Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you for another fantastic presentation. My Grandparents and parents have always confirmed the fact that FDR's disability was virtually hidden from the American public
My mother told me that when she was growing up during the Depression her parents and almost everyone in her working class neighborhood had a picture of FDR in their home.
Britain and the USA are the most natural of allies. Shared moral imperatives and a primary focus on God, Country and Freedom are still today the light for all the world. Roosevelt and Churchill led us out of the darkness, let’s hope that we can keep that focus for the challenges ahead. 👍👍👍
I absolutely love hearing a great communicator! Churchills’s Christmas message was bang on when he included the future of the children being protected so that they could have their inheritance and live in free countries. It was very moving- as was every speech I’ve heard from him!
It amazes me how your speech pattern is done so well that my mind doesn't wander as you hit me with fascinating facts from the past. Other people who have history channels lose my attention so often that I no longer watch them
May you snd your family have a joyously Happy, Healthy and Merry Christmas. Be safe. Be well. Stay warm. And thank you for the gift of your videos all year long.
When I was a kid I loved Christmas and being Catholic we did an Advent calendar. It was a much better time to be alive than now. For decades I tolerated Christmas. Now I am enjoying it again through my grandkids. To survive now the Free World must band together against tyranny and slavery!
Merry Christmas! I think Roosevelt and Churchill knew fairly well, that their decisions would have so much effect on the world after the war. Thanks be to God, they were men of character and courage even with their faults. If needed today, would such leaders arise?
And a Merry Christmas to you Sir, from a fellow South Dakotan (Milbank) and hopes for a grand New Year! Love your channel! I was the oral history guy at the National Naval Aviation Museum here in Pensacola.
As one history lover to another I've read the book that you spoke of regarding Roosevelt and Eleanor and also I've learned a great deal from your video. Thank you so much for recording it and giving me some real human inside into the men and women who fought the war that I wouldn't know about for at least another 15 years. I already known about most of it because I was the youngest of my family and my mother worked in a war flat during war. She never failed to tell me about the war when she felt it was time for me to know nor did she turn away from any of my questions, given that many of my relatives were also German and from Europe.
Churchill: the greatest ever Briton, according to a BBC poll several years ago. I feel fortunate that my life overlapped with his for a few months. A great leader, and his relationship with Roosevelt was highly valuable in helping the Western Alliance to be so well organised and equipped in the latter stages of the war against Germany. FDR too was also a great man. Oh, that Britain and America could now have leaders such as them!
