"He left behind a ragged cassock, and a life of good works."
When one sentence delivers such an awesome eulogy, you know it was a well-lived life.

When I was a kid, a neighbor had a shop where he just printed and warehoused cards for hallmark. The sign is still there on Google street view but I can't read it.

My favorite Christmas music is The Nutcracker. Got to see it one year in my hometown. It was the
performance with our symphony orchestra. The dancers gave a wonderful performance. I would love to go again but wow! the tickets are astronomical!

The Christmas Armistice. Exceptional case, is a story about ordinary people (private soldiers), overcoming indoctrination, stress and finding "humanity" in hopelessness alone at the front. The generals ruled there after it never came to be repeated. Merry Christmas to you Greetings from Denmark Jan

It's too late for this Christmas, but I'm curious about a story passed down in my family. My dad's family were fruit farmers in Bavaria before their immigration to America in the 19th century. Instead of decorating an evergreen tree, they would cut a branch from a cherry tree and plant it in an indoor container. It would sprout blossoms in time for Christmas. We hear so much about German evergreen trees, and today, but I'm curious about this tree blossom custom. thanks.

indeed also too late for this christmas to get some "Barbarazweige" to bloom
they have to be cut on Saint Barbara's Day if you want them to flower around Christmas
good omen if they're flowering very lush and exactly during the holy days and maybe next year (remember remember the 4th of December 😁) Merry Christmas !

Really enjoy your stories. Today the Nutcracker history really intrigued me and I did not recognize the location of the wonderful Nutcracker Museum. Out here in the Pacific NW, Leavenworth is pronounced with a very silent "A" - so I realized I have visited the Nutcracker Museum located in the Cascade Mountains town of Leavenworth, WA. Time to visit again for sure. Thanks.

Merry Christmas from little town over here. As a huge fan of history, and especially this channel, as well as Christmas. I absolutely loved these forgotten and not well known historical facts, also your collection of hats during the cards segment. But my favorite is that as I'm watching this my dad sat down at the table and watched with me. For a few extra minutes with my dad on a hectic, busy morning thank you for history that deserves to be remembered and a Happy New Year. ♥

Hope you're having a good Christmastide!
Please note an English tradition at Christmastide is to perform pantomimes. One of the more famous is "Babes in the Wood".
It is alleged this took place after a real incident near Agecroft Hall, Salford, England, in the reign of Edward III in the Middle Ages.
Agecroft Hall was subsequently sold and rebuilt near Richmond, Virginia, USA on the banks of the James River.
History is closer than you think.
    Only connect.....
    Best wishes. 🙂

There is actually a fair amount of disagreement on that issue. But that is, obviously, beyond the scope of the video. A tree was a common motif in the pageants, and thus a potential inspiration for the Christmas tree.

Do nor forget Washington Irving. Early in, he and his New York circle began transforming St Nicholas into Santa Claus.
His later years in England involved celebrating at a great house and doing research. The vicar explained how former practices had forbidden celebrations but those bad times were over.
Irving portrayed a family holiday with celebrations for young and old, with feasting l, decorations, charity and a church service.
He published the stories in his sketchbook, influencing America and England. Dickens learned from him.
The relevant chapters were often reprinted as Old Christmas, in richly
Illustrated editions. You mention one but his influenced the holiday decades earlier

A few errors here. King James I was not the King of England, rather the King of Great Britain and Ireland as was Queen Victoria. There hasn't been a King (or Queen) of England since the 1600's. Rowland Hill did not invent the postage stamp, he stole the idea from James Chalmers a fact now recognised at Hill's memorial.
