2:28 - All you need to make this an amazing run and gun cinema camera is a Small Rig cage and a Nano One battery. VERY small setup. I have been "running and gunning" with it for the past three months getting 2.5 hours from each charge. There is really nothing else like it on the market today. I have to laugh when I hear people that shoot both video and stills (and buy Canon) say they passed on the R5C due to the battery and instead bought the C70 and R5 or R3. Cool...if you don't mind carrying two separate cameras and spending $9,400 - $11,500. What you get with the R5C for around $4,800 (after the Nano One battery and cage) is truly remarkable.

Sounds like the Canon cinema OS that the R5C uses is very different from the regular R video system. 4K/120 with auto ISO works fine with the R5. You really shouldn't have overheat problems in Canada. I'd stick with the R5.
For macro I almost always shoot at F/8 or smaller. The closer you are to the subject, the less DOF; and the RF 100 F/2.8 can focus significantly closer than the Sony.
What settings are you using on sony? If you are using the standard pp off without any changes, I highly recommend turning the highlights down and the sharpening all the way off.
Tried to do a family vlog with my D810. Didn't work real well. Would like to get into mirrorless... Maybe a Z6?
What should I sell? D800, D300s, D200, D70, Mamiya RB67, other old film cameras.
Both look fantastic. The UX (or lack thereof) on the R5C is for sure a show-stopper for me as well.

In skin tones they 95% match honestly and I think it's a tie, sometimes sony looks a bit too reddish and sometimes Canon is too below or bleached. Still curious to know what mode did you use them or how color graded. And about the outdoor footage I think the Kelvin on Sony seems have been set always higher if not being auto in both.
What's the best compact camera on the market for travel vlogs. I like the m6 mark2 but that has been discontinued. The Sony zv1 is limiting on the zoom capability. 😳 Is there anything new coming out that I should wait for? 📸 Love your terribly bad comedy.👍👀

What is the focal length you use the most often? Is it 35?
The only Sony I owned was the RX10 mk2 and that was a really good camera except it sometimes got that magenta like you say. Most peeps wouldn't notice, and mostly it wasn't obvious. I would def recommend it in general. I think Sony must use a weaker IR filter than Canon, in order to get better noise scores in the benchmarks. Same with the anti-aliasing filters that Canon always uses, yes its less sharp, but image is more pleasing.

Sony colors are very natural. Just read an article that made some lab test between fuji canon sony and panasonic. Fuji and sony had the most accurate colors from all 4 brands, the test was made between multiple camera models
@@veresdenialex Ohh man what are u talking about? sony is one of the manufacturers with the most color problem. Buy yourself a real graphics monitor with AdobeRGB color palette coverage, preferably 4k, and just get any raw sony and canon file you can easily test it in davinci resolve. Sony has better colors than the a7sIII model because it improved them, but it is still far behind :).
@@RKusz i work as a colorist at a production studio. We work with multiple brand cinema cameras including canon, red, sony, phantom cameras in parallel with other brand mirorrless cameras. Not talking about older models, the colors are not very good on those and sony came a long way, the test i'm talking about was made with an a7 iii model which came second to the fujixt4. Canon fell on 5th place i think. If you pay attention to color, you know Canon is shifting colors very much to be more pleasing, they are not natural or accurate to real life. Also desaturating some colors, mostly on yellows so it focuses very much on the reds. You can check up comparisons on youtube to see how canon compresses their footage and how it's desaturating or eliminating colors completely when overexposed to get you more pleasing colors out of camera. Idk about you, but i prefer to get as much info so i can decide what i throw away. I've personally tested footage from r6 r5 r5c just recently and sometimes they have a strong green cast like most cameras that shot log with a wide gamut. Have you ever shoot fuji log? It's green in many occassions, and that is fine, because you are meant to grade it.

At the start it was hard to pick I didn’t like the highlights on the right image, and liked the hue of the skin on the left more but wish the skin was had less saturation with the left image, otherwise felt fairly similar

I think the best man to watch to understand Sony skintones is Jacques Crafford. He just released a video on the best Sony skintones. I as an a7Siii user have to say in the opening shot Canon looked better for skin but the second half was more even.

When you do these "color science" comparatives, you need to include all brands you can. To me, of these two, Sony was the obvious winner (but there are lens and sensor elements which influence my preference) but I also know that there are other brands/lens/sensor combinations that I prefer over Sony.
I'm so glad I picked the camera I own, the Sony.

Canon colors are not quite 'natural' if by that you mean authentic to real life. At the studio, me and the guys made some comparison test with the r6 r5 r5c vs other cinema cameras like Red and sony fx6. Canon keeps shifting colors andhas more pleasing tones, but not natural to real life. They shift and desaturate yellows and greens and red a lot.

Canon for people. Sony for wildlife. It's kinda been that way for 12 years. Nikon is the compromise balance between. My wife won't allow me to even take a still of her with a Sony!
You have to use the canon software to get off files bigger than 4gb. they show up as empty if you just plug the camera to a computer
The Canon software doesn't even recognize them, you need a card reader.
You have to do this with same lens adapted

I've had my R5C for a few weeks. Totally agree it's definitely nothing like using any other mirrorless or DLSR for video. It's very much a cinema camera. I've never read through the manual on something I've purchased more in my life. I let my buddy who is a photographer play with it and he was completely lost. All of the settings and terminology that are used in the camera are totally normal for cinematographers but someone who is a photographer or used to photography cameras is going to be totally lost with the R5C without spending a decent amount of time with the manual. Even with all the customizability I've found quite a few quirks and limitations. The advanced monitoring tools don't actually work all that well. Try that XFAVC mode once you get your card reader. Those files are super easy to edit and for some reason all of the MP4 files out of the R5C look a bit soft to me. I also have an A7siii and the XFAVC and the 8K RAW out of the R5C are easier to edit than the files from the A7siii.

What kills me about the R5c is no auto exposure in 120fps. And possibly worse, you can't map shutter speed to ANY dial lol. Makes manually exposing really hard for those who don't obey that 180 degree shutter rule at all times.
@@NickDelDuca Thank you so much for the info. You have pretty powerful machine! I also own both a7s3 and R5C but have not had a chance to try R5C on a real project yet. My initial impression on its autofocus is pretty disappointing. I much prefer Sony’s AF. FYI my M1 Mac cut through Sony’s footage like butter.
@@cameraconspiracies Yeah that M-Fn button is the best bet for shutter speed. If you tap it then you can change it with the wheel. I think thats what you were talking about in the video. It also pisses me off that you can't assign auto exposure compensation to one of the wheels either. The thing about shutter angle is you can't push it as far. With a shutter speed camera/setting you can let it go all the way to 1/8000 if you have to but only have a few stops of shutter angle abuse before it won't let you go any further if you are in that mode. So if you needed more you would have to do a menu dive to switch it over to shutter speed so you could get a higher shutter speed.
I left canon when they didn’t go to mirrorless cameras and went Sony.
I’ve since seen the light and bought a zcam super cinema at a low cost.

I still use a BMPCC OG, let me tell you, Canon makes amazing batteries. I have two E6-whatevers hooked up to the Black Magic and they last for days. The R5C drainage is rookie numbers.
Are you filming in 4k or that 1080 upscale bs?
Beginning was both 1080p, macro was 4k 120p, ending was 4k 24p.
@@cameraconspiracies You really need to be filming everything in 4k; think about it mate, you're using super expensive cameras and you're only using a quarter of their capability. Why film in soft 1080p when there is such clarity from the 4k?

Went through a ton of cameras this last two years. Now shooting c70 and R3. And had the option last week to get an R5C:
Passed it up due to the battery drain issues.
Regardless the colors look better on the Canon in your comparison.
The R5C is like this.
You buy it to rig up. Like I mentioned below, had the opportunity to buy one last week. Almost did it. But didn’t because I realized it would have been “much the same” as my C70…. After rigging of course. It wouldn’t have been my run-n-gun camera I was wanting.
Hence the FX3 seems like it’s the ticket now. As my third camera for the travel feels.

It's weird, to me the Canon looks to have Sony's historical "green/lizard" tint to it. If you posted this video 2 years ago I think I would have assumed the Canon was the Sony.
Yeah, because canon is shifting colors. Sony tries to give as accurate as possible colors out of camera, then you choose what to do with it. Canon is shifting colors, desaturating yellows, shifting greens towards cyan to be more pleasent out of camera

@@Davitor1 color graded many camera models, like the canon c70 r6 r5 r5c c200 c300, panasonic, fuji, sony fx6 a7siii, phantom cameras, which for me, have the best color reproduction, and you shouldn t expect less from a 100k camera. Haven't worked with arri tho

He hates DFDAF. Even the GH-6 pulses like mad and doesn't track well. Otherwise he likely would. But any Panasonic is pretty off the table because of the AF.

Anyway all this color science thing is a bit tricky because everything is different, from the picture profiles to the lenses rendering.. And with all the editing that comes with the color grading, both brands have excellent base colors to work with.

I think the innovation that saves the R5c for run and gun use would be a new battery grip that takes LP-e19 batteries (what R3 and 1dx2/3 takes). Going to Vmount or rigging a battery bank is too unwieldy and subject to getting disconnected or broken at vulnerable points of failure (jacks and cables flailing about)
A regular battery even the LP-e19 won’t support the power demands needed for 8K60. The R5C is a cinema-orientated body, show me a Red/arri camera that takes in-body LP batteries, they all take a big brick rigged on its back. Also if you check the Imatest graphs, the R5C exhibits way better dynamic range than the R3, in some areas it even beats the A7SIII. How can we want 45mpx + high DR + high quality screen + 8K60RAW and we expect it to run on air is beyond me. The R3 has a 24mpx sensor, the A7SIII has a 12mpx sensor, high mpx count/resolution also comes with higher readout data-rate demands, not only in photo mode but especially in video mode where even if you shoot 4K you can’t expect it easier for the camera since the body’s processor has to downscale the entire 45mpx sensor to that specific resolution. It’s easy to expect a lot from a body without understanding the technical demands that the amazing features it comes with requires.
@@costinvaly1 I never said the LP-e19 would support 8k60 - I just want what the LP-e6nh supports without the battery running out in under an hour (or less), by not having to resort to a rigged external battery. I am very familiar with powering gimbals and cameras with vmount batteries using plates, dtaps and DC cables. For me the whole point of the R5c is to have something in that small form factor that can shoot 8k30 or 4k60 without overheating.
Also I never said anything about comparing the R5c to the R3 (which I own), nor do I expect unreasonable power and performance specs. I am well aware of what the R5c is capable of, and how that compares to the rest of the Canon lineup and the competition. It’s like you are having an imaginary argument with no one.

pretty funny, yup the skin tones def look more yellow in the sony. Skin tones aside Sony seems to struggle with mixed lighting conditions compared to other camera brands. This is more of an issue when filming realestate and areas of multiple lighting sources. Sometimes the footage just looks bad
yeah canon still has colors that i like more, battery issue is quite annoying but I ain't getting that stuff anyways so I'm not the target :)

Isn't a desirable cinema camera one that gives very detailed files but with flat colors and contrast? All the magic happens with color grading and stuff in post I thought. Color grading is probably too much work for vlogging but I reckon the best color science for cinema is the flattest, dullest, the most 'flexible' files.
Always watch your videos,&sometimes,very occasionally I learn something 😉& it's your personality &the promise of a few laughs that keep me coming back everytime.

Yes it is noticeable in comparison videos,between one camera& another,even though youtubes compression etc.does it's best to ruin any quality or minor flaw that is in a cameras own compression/storage output.So,& hear me out this is only an idea,as camera lovers,we are all anal about such things as codecs and reproduction.Would it be possible for you to upload samples of footage from various cameras and lenses to a file sharing site.So that we(your adoring fans😁🤞)can download the samples& make better comparisons,without the youtube compression adding another layer of stripping down data& re rendering with 25%of the source material wiped out of existence.Example...mp3's lob off anything below 10Hz& everything above 27khz to save space as those frequencies are believed to be outside of most peoples hearing.But what of the below 10Hz that you would have felt in your body,it destroys the full experience of the original material.(before anyone says anything I pulled those numbers out of my behind&was only guessing to make an example.So my point still stands,I know it would be extra work for you,so maybe just for special occasions,or when you believe being able to see a clip without the youtube compression,would make a large& substantial difference to the way the source material is reproduced.
Just a thought,longer than I intended,you probably got as far as ego massage& decided that'll do,I'll take that.
