    There is always a trade off. The less expensive full frame cameras are severely handicapped. I find that you are trying to find a camera that has amazing photography applications as well as video. I really don’t think there is one that does both well. It is pretty much one or the other. The best and cheapest is the Lumix S5 full frame with a in body stabilization lens 24-105. The AF is not terrible. It is not nearly as bad GH5 or 6. With a smaller sensor it is so cropped which is a good thing for wildlife. I recommend micro 4/3 system for anything long distance because the size is so small. With the long focal distance you can still have subject separation. In the over $3500 range (probably more)you might be able to find a full with decent specs (10 bit color 444 all I. That is what Netflix wants. Full frame stabilization is terrible. Sony A7 Iv is the only option but the slow motion is weak sauce. Better slow motion with small sensor. The rolling shutter is ridiculous. The biggest proof of the seesaw handicap is in the GH5s. They give Raw photo mode 12bit to balance out that 10 megapixel sensor. That is basically means that they’re choosing not to give the cameras 12 bit. Bottom line is you have to use the external recorder option. All the good glass not have stabilization. Gimbals are not practical. The companies want there to be a reason to buy the expensive cameras. But the expensive cameras are not a big bang for their buck. Used lumix s5 with firmware and the 24-105mm stabilization Lens.

    5:15 In general, for any footage that you are heavily grading, you should be doing most sharpening in post for best results. That's why the eterna looks sharper, because the same sharpness algorithm is applied at the correct stage. Sharpness algorithms basically just take neighbouring pixels and stretch their contrast. If you have a super flat image (F-Log) and stretch its contrast, you won't get that much contrast/'sharpness'.

    When I started becoming more interested in video/photo I thought I'd play it safe by starting with APSC, so my first leap was a Sony A6000, from there I upgraded to an A6600, and you guessed it, I have the Sigma trio for it. I love it for the size, and it's great for its portability. The most frustrating thing to me about the A6600 was it's video, it just barely does 4K, the rolling shutter and bit depth became more of an issue to me, so I recently added a Sony A7S III just for video. If money was no object, I'd probably get an Alpha 1 or an A7R IV, alongside the A7S III. I think it's likely the next version of the A7S will have video animal eye AF along with probably better 240fps support. I haven't been thrilled with the line-skipped "1080", but I have to say for most things the 4k 120 is stellar, the quality drop, even at 12,800 ISO is pretty minimal. It really is a beast. Personally I don't have an issue with Sony color science. If you're feeling super pedantic, you can use a color-checker and correct in Davinci Resolve pretty easily to "neutralize" weird colors, it is an added step however and quite annoying.

  • @bladerunner.1984

    Full frame magic isn't something you see. It's a usability, and for me boils down to low light / high ISO performance, and dynamic range limitations, inherited by that. I have both full frame and apsc Sony bodies, and as much as I love smaller / lighter apsc setup, it's far more limiting and far less forgiving in low light situations. The reasons are pure physics: you get much less light into the sensor, at the same time, all your focals multiply by 1.5, which means you also need higher shutter speeds. Surely, low density apsc sensor combined with good ibis might solve the problem, but I haven't seen a lot of these combinations recently.

  • @hughjohns9110
    @hughjohns9110 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I use Fuji APSC (XS10) and Sony FF (A7Rmk4). I also frequently use the Sony in APSC mode. In most shooting situations when minimal cropping is needed (eg landscape) I see no difference between them in the final JPGs at typical viewing sizes. In fact both cameras are stunningly good and crap in the air has more effect on IQ than the sensor sizes.
    It’s only in more demanding focussing situations that the Sony has an edge.

      The full frame look is a hoax. Adjusted for DOF and FOV there is nothing to it. Look up Steve Yedlins site where he scientifically debunks the "full frame look". It something manufacturers shove down prosumers throats. Its the new pixel pushing. The only real reason for a larger sensor is the usage of large photosites, which would produce a cleaner image and could handle more dynamic range. To make it simple to understand why i love Fuji cameras, they're the closest thing you can get to an Alexa look without spending more than 5000$. Don't get me wrong, it's not even comparable, it's just the closest. No Sony, no Canon, no Panasonic can get this close. Something about the colors, highlight roll-off, skin tones, film like noise, images just look creamier and more organic.

    • @Yodd
      @Yodd ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true, you just dont know what you are doing. Fuji might be closer straight out of camera, but sony has more options in post and more dynamic range to work with.

    • @vedranrupic2846
      @vedranrupic2846 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Yodd How exactly does Sony have more options in post than for example the 14bit downsampled to 10bit prores that you get out of a Fuji x-h2s? Also not correct regarding dynamic range. Watch Gerald Undones test of the the x-h2s, which has the most dynamic range he has successfully measured in a hybrid. Including the a7sIII and the Fx3. While I agree with @hyperborean regarding the very pleasing colors in general of the Fuji, skintones are not rendered as well as on the Alexa. Highlight rolloff is very close, as well as noise.

    • @Yodd
      @Yodd ปีที่แล้ว

      @@vedranrupic2846 the dynamic range tests are not the same, because he corrected the images in post first to denoise the image which he didnt do for sony a7s3 because you cant turn off noise reduction in camera on a7s. The in camera results without postprocessing were better for the sony. If you want to do a fair comparison you can use ninja v and shoot raw because raw doesnt apply noise reduction which he could apply in post for the sony. Clearly the way he tests dr is expecting the image straight out of camera, post production nr is much better than in camera one that is why it gives a higher score. Without post nr sony has better dr.

    • @vedranrupic2846
      @vedranrupic2846 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Yodd My friend, what you are saying doesn't make sense. Processing is processing. Where it happens doesn't matter. In camera, in a computer or on a sandwich toaster. It's not a good thing for the camera to not be able to turn off noise-reduction. It just means that the dynamic range isn't there in the shadows without it. And all noise-reduction is a degradation of the image. So when you said in your original statement that "Sony is better for postproduction" is a contradiction to what you are saying now, because in post you want control, and if the noise-reduction is baked in, there is no way to undo that. You say without post nr sony has better dr, well thats just noise reduction no matter where you choose to do it. But if you have an image where there hasn't been applied already: You have more control. Which is what professionals want.

    It's not the cameras, it's the lenses. Fast full-frame zooms are fucking heavy. Even an f4 midrange zoom is bulky. The only genuinely portable full-frame lenses are standard and wide-angle primes. One look at f2.8 Lumix zooms is all it takes to make the case for MFT. And if that's not racy enough, consider how fast you can fly with a Speedbooster and Tokina APS-C zooms, or for something truly special, the Leica f1.7 zooms. Even something as garden-variety as the Olympus 12-100mm f4 has no peer in the full-frame arena. The only thing MFT has genuinely lacked is high-ISO performance, a hurdle which was demolished years ago with the GH5s, and now the GH6. IMO, the MFT future has never looked brighter.

However that old computer (I couldn't upgrade the system for various reasons) is loaded with Adobe apps and music production software that I don't have to pay each month for. So I get a second Imac, with system Monterey, (still have the old one) play with a Capture One demo, then pal2tech tells me I can open Fuji Raw and save as a tiff using preview. I take a pic of my old Keystone 16mm using the X-H1, open preview, turn it into a tiff, and I now have a 192 meg tiff. I don't need full frame.

    It's all about a personal need philosophy. There is always a faster car, but I am not going to drive an Ariel Atom daily. There is always a better phone, but I am not going to spend over 1200 USD for a damn phone. Same with cameras. I would buy full frame for professional work only and since I am doing none, APS-C (Sony) perfectly suits my needs. It is a camera that is close the the concept of the best camera which is with you at the moment. Low light performance and bokeh is potent enough and image quality is miles ahead compared to phones. I don't have to scare people with a bazooka attached to it's body and it is a beast in a small package (I am looking at you, micro 4/3). There are always better and larger sensors. Would you consider going with a large format for bird photography?

    I think curently and in near future full frame will be the better option for some reasons - with the overwhelming amount of mirrorless cameras nowadyas and their shorter flange distances now you can adapt easily cheap old vintage glass, also in general mirorless cameras are lighter. My current FF camera is lighter that my previous NIkon crop DSLR. Also it's easier to produce wider range of fast lenses for full frame than for crop sensor. For example there is 14mm f1.8 AF lens for full frame, the equivalent for crop sensor should be 9mm f1.1, which is non-existant.

    I realize now that you are at the peak of a pyramid of people that care about what your face or anyone's face or the colors look like while vloging or shooting videos. At the top alone is You and the only person that really cares the most, underneath you there's a few people that pay attention and understand and do care about those subtle differences and as the pyramid gets wider and lower everyone down there can hardly tell any difference and really don't care at all lol. Your voice carries mostly from the top downwards through those people that care and kind of fades I guess when it gets down to the ones that don't care, as one would expect. So there's really only a few people up top that can tell the difference or really care about those different c-logs and skin tones and all that. I guess as long as you've got a lot of viewers and everyone's enjoying the videos it doesn't matter! Enjoy being at the top!

But keep in mind, if you point a 90k Alexa at a bag of laundry under a harsh midday sun, it is just going to look like a bag of laundry...shot under the midday sun. You have got to compose your shots, light and design them, paint the walls to match your actors acne, etc. Non of that has anything to do with the camera. The "cinematic Look" has nothing to do with the camera. All you want from the camera is maximum data capture... at Full Frame. Big one!

    Astia was nice-ish... Look - out of memory, Standard is just that, Velvia is accentuating contrast and saturation, a blend of both perhaps, Astia is a slight slight blend of the Velvia with standard. nothing special about it in particular. I mean i will say it's the better of the two, no contest, but it depends on your scene. where the Fuji shines and accentuates for skin tones in my honest opinion, is not so much the film sims as with the dance between the film sims and the white balance, not to mention your dynamic settings (both in range and in working with your lows and highs, all in the quick menu, to paint your shot) because our eyes see only so much, and the camera sees more. what do you want it to say? -- when you start using the classic chromes and classic negs for skin tones, plus really playing with the WB, perhaps adjusting your screen temp to match your monitor - camera monitor and pc as well -- you ll achieve much better results.
    i mean i think you re not doing this camera any justice Kasey. it s much more versatile, it ll eat up any other camera, between the film sims, the massive wb (because the tolerance to a dailight setting on a fuji is not the same as the tolerance of a dlight sett in panasonic or God forbid a Sony. horrible that. you have to change constantly, but i love all systems, they re all special in their own way, but not in this. Fuji is the WB king, but i have not tried (new) Canons.
    let me rephrase that, you re really good at your job mate :) you take wonderful videos and photographers are bad people, that's why they get upset over a joke that probably made them more famous in the first place. however, you re not doing it justice with the skin tones. Fuji is massive with what it can do.
    I HAVE AN IDEA
    here s how you get to it -- put a dark scene in. something that you would legit need to use 10.000 ISO to make it work in the least, 12 thow might not be as clean, and i put -4 on NR because the NR in the Fuji is grand, and because NR renders the image in a funny way. any iso grain tends to still be there but blurred out or doing chroma weird stuff in HD, whereas -4 is beautiful -- but if you legit put a night scene on, if you of course stop being a grandpa and come up with more challenging night scenes, you ll quickly discover what every film sim is capable of.
    i know Eterna might seem lovely to you in the daytime here and there because of colors or whatnot, but in the low light is where it really shines. In low light it s the closest thing you have to a Log, and it responds better to the before mentioned shadow tweaking. it will have a slight magentish hue to the dark areas. whereas the only other sim that covers low light okay, which out of memory should be the pro neg standard (or the other neg if not) which is purely lovely -- that renders the shadows with a slight blueish or greenish tint, but very welcoming, film like, nothing sony like or anything. and extremely welcoming against Eterna. which i just don t prefer, only if i want to emulate a Sony look, and turn my shadows up...
    so after those tests, of taking some vids, and reviewing them, remembering the film sims, you ll see that you have way more power than youtube needs for a correctly or artistically rendered face. -- was going to say that when you switch film sims in night scenes, you ll notice, that even though there is a high tolerance to the fuji WB, changing film sims will perhaps need a different white balance, depending on what you set it for and your scene.
    -- what makes your face look better on Fuji than anything else is the contrast they can manage, the specific picture profiles they have, and the highlight rolloff. i suggest playing around with the WB to expose for the skin tone you like. try this first in STD, THEEEEEEEEN change film sims. you ll see it's going to skew those initial preferences out of whack.
    and for the love of video, adjust your WBs, to a T. to a Toneh.
    but for all this to work, you have to know what you're doing. what you want. and to have a calibrated screen. do some tests. does the video on your EVF or cam Monitor look like the one in Resolve with no tweaks?
    know what you re doing, what does that mean? well at least in the minimal sense. you have to know, after you change a setting if that is what you wanted to do or not. does that bring you closer to your desired look? or not?
    i m writing all this because, i love you man.
    i see a good heart there, running around in circles trying to find the perfect thing that he will never find.
    because often times, the perfect thing is within us. not us in particular, but our ability to find and appreciate what we've got.
    i think you should continue to crazy-russian-hack your way into every camera. i love you as a reviewer, but as a person, i think you deserve more peace. more peace of mind and peace of heart, that you have all that you need and then some.
    please keep the videos coming mate. you ve brought allot of joy to my heart. was just trying to share my ideas on the matter, i know they would have been more fitting for a face to face but it is what it is. God bless you and yours!
