Amidst the verdant enclave of Athol, Johannesburg, emerges the latest avant-garde marvel from the studios of Nico van der Meulen Architects. Crafted under the expert eye of the esteemed Werner van der Meulen, House Sar epitomizes opulence, coziness, and utility within a minimalist architectural framework.
Initially, the patrons presented Nico van der Meulen Architects with a modest single-story abode, its pitched roof a humble feature. However, obscured vistas and limited garden access left the interior shrouded in darkness, prompting the primary request for a metamorphosis into a luminous, contemporary dwelling. Overcoming the challenge of illuminating every corner became Werner van der Meulen's mission, one he proved capable of accomplishing.
A structure of steel columns and beams envelops the entrance, while louvered panels veil the four garages and hovering roofs. Each surface, whether wall, roof, or floor, appears deliberately distinguished through material, texture, or hue, resulting in a distinctive entrance concept.
Upon approach, a suspended steel-framed cube hangs mid-air, the frameless glass pivot door beckoning into a minimalist yet inviting foyer. The replacement of the tiled roof with a floating flat alternative instantly bathes the living areas in light. Additionally, a raised passageway ceiling invites northern light into both the passage and the southern guest bedroom, where an atrium facilitates morning sun into the bathroom, offering natural ventilation and illumination.
With daylight permeating even the innermost recesses, the design of the roof emerges as the antidote to winter's dimness. An adjacent atrium, nestled off the kitchen, not only admits morning light but also facilitates nocturnal cooling during sweltering summers.
The strategic integration of expansive glass sliding doors by Werner van der Meulen ensures nearly every space enjoys direct garden access, while lofty living areas imbue a sense of grandeur to the predominantly single-story layout.
The addition of a new study on the upper level afforded the staircase an architectural prominence, fashioned as a mezzanine overlooking the garden and family area. Encased in grey-tinted glass, the steel staircase elegantly links the study to the lower living space.
The demarcation between indoors and outdoors dissipates seamlessly when the sliding doors part, encouraging interaction between the open-plan kitchen, lounge, family room, and lanai.
The fusion of indoor/outdoor living has long been a hallmark of Nico van der Meulen Architects, achieved through extensive use of glass and steel. In the case of House Sar, vast expanses of glass maximize garden views while facilitating natural light and ventilation. The lanai, overlooking the swimming pool and water feature, adds a contemporary touch to the landscape, complementing the modern abode.
The main bedroom design incorporates a secluded lounge area and en suite bathroom, discreetly shielded by a steel louvered screen. Direct bedroom-to-garden access offers a refreshing vista of the contemporary landscape. An illuminated wall behind the bed's headboard fosters an intimate ambiance, while horizontal louvers echo the external architecture, ensuring a seamless transition between interior and exterior.
The M Square Lifestyle Design team endeavored to create a warm, functional family space mirroring the architectural ethos of the residence. Linear elements visually connect spaces while concealing various amenities, preserving an uncluttered aesthetic.
Texture and material selection further enhance spatial continuity, evident in the OSB bulkheads and oak paneling extending from the entrance to the living areas. A wall unit discreetly accommodates the fireplace and TV unit, concealing ancillary facilities for a streamlined interior.
The monochromatic interior scheme prioritizes textural diversity over color hierarchy, echoed in the furniture selection. Signature high-gloss and leather pieces juxtapose against textured fabric sofas sourced from M Square Lifestyle Necessities, including esteemed international luxury brands.
From its architectural finesse to its comfort, House Sar exemplifies the pinnacle of luxury where form harmonizes with function. The absence of columns in the design fosters an open, fluid spatial arrangement.
