- Jonathan Haidt is a social psychologist, author and professor at New York University Stern School of Business. He is the author of a number of highly influential books including The Happiness Hypothesis (2006), The Righteous Mind (2012), The Coddling of the American Mind (2018), and The Anxious Generation (2024).
Jonathan spoke about the importance of truth, his atheism, experiences of using psychedelics, and why he thinks we are over protecting children in the physical world and under protecting them and in digital and online spaces.

Thank you so much for this interview. I happened upon your TH-cam channel from a link in a comment on Paul Kingsnorth Substack. Serendipitous indeed as Jonathan's Anxious Generation just arrived fin the mail. I am a psychotherapist and ordered it to help better articulate my suggestions to parents to drastically limit their children's access to technology, especially online social media. I also really appreciated your thoughtful comments at the end of the interview. I'm now a subscriber to your channel.

He is! Such an important voice for our time.
Great conversation. Haidt 'Righteous Mind' was one of the things that encouraged me to listen more to people who disagreed with me, with a view to just understanding where they're coming from. In terms of political parties though, I'm often amazed at the range of beliefs within a party, for instance liberal economics and conservative values don't sit well together, and occasionally you see the clash, like with planning laws being relaxed meaning Greenbelt land is built on. But Haidt has done really good work to help us see beyond our tribe, long may it continue.

I really enjoyed this episode. I would have appreciated additional context about more specifically what, as a passionate centrist with an eye on psychological research, he views as preposterous about each US political camp.
Another reaction: I found it interesting that he pointed out the absurdity of universities canceling conservative talks for fear of resulting physical harm to listeners, and a few sentences later, he described his need to tread carefully on gender issues to avoid "getting shot." As someone admittedly prone to hyperbole in conversation, I'm really struck by the extent to which folks left, right, and, it appears, center lean so heavily on hyperbolic rhetoric. I haven't decided what I make of it.
I'm looking forward to reading from this guest's publications.
