  • This is my Second Date with the 2017 MINI Countryman. However this is no ordinary Countryman, but a Cooper S E or a PHEV. In its history MINI did some real life tests of an electric hatch on the verge of the first and second decade of the 21st century. Findings from these tests were used to make BMW i3. However this is MINI’s first series production model with alternative drivetrain.

    Marek still gives the best reviews. I like the car I’m toying between the MC and Mercedes GLA.

    Thank´s Marek! I will choose the Yaris Hybrid for the half of price. It´s maybe not so stylish, but I can fly to a nice vacation too.
    At the moment is hybrid driving the best way to save the world without losing the utility value of the car.

    Enjoyed the review I was expecting MINI tobe further along the electric road than the average manufacturer having been given the role of mule for the i3 vehicle never mind I am liking what your reviewing so far Marek.

    Quite like the car. I have driven the 2 Series Active Tourer PHEV, and I think this plug-in hybrid setup is probably the best one overall.
    However, the pricing is ridiculous. I do not mind a slightly higher starting price, if this is a "premium" brand, but having even absolutely necessary things as expensive extras is ridiculous.

    For such a tall, bulky car, it has a pathetically small boot. Measured it at about 315 litres, not much more than a Fiesta’s.
    What on earth have they done with all the space? It’s only got a tiny battery, and a tinier fuel tank, which combine with a thirsty engine to ensure you get to know all your local petrol stations. The original Mini was a masterpiece of clever packaging, this thing is the opposite.
    And I found the handling pretty disappointing - it rolls too much in corners (probably because it’s top heavy) and the steering has absolutely no feel at all.
    Does go well, though. And the seats are nice.

      PHEV? No idea. Regular Countryman - yes, and no. Stay tuned for more about that in a couple of weeks.

    Yeah Finally a review for the PHEV :0) So Marek Drives I really don't understand here what is this BMW/MINI Rep. saying take the U.S market for example that doesn't have a lot of those nice public plug boxes that all of Europe and other countries have. (side bar utilities here have to figure out away to price gouge us first b4 they can install them everywhere)What do you do when you run out of battery life? Do you just keep the car in Auto or Save battery mode till full charge then go back into Gas charging mode? Or is this car a just must sometime or another plug-in the wall if not the you might ruin the Lithium batteries? Might think about getting a used one day (too over pricey now) but if not able to plug it in after driving it at the end of the day or week like you did it's not useful to me. :0/

      You continue driving in regular hybrid mode (like a Prius) or charge when driving on motorway.

    BMW group hesitates between phev with 4 wheels drive or the electric engine coupled with the gearbox, seen in the new 5th.
    Since the 5th architecture is just like Audi etron, I guess that it will be standard phev in the future, unfortunately mini is no more the pioneer, your opinion ?

    whole world including BMW use 'blue' for EV labels, so heck, let's use yellow on the Mini.??.!? Anyway, I didn't know the i3 was initially developed using the mini platform, interesting info!

      Not platform. It was developed based MINI E technology, data gathered and experience gained during the real life test phase.

      They used yellow on the original Mini E as well. It's just a label.

      Marek Drives your forgetting about the test data from the mini e like the other person said they used them originally at the London Olympic to transport VIP and sports stars . From what I am told they used some of them for another 2 years at BMW centres around Europe that was the basis of the i3 the only reason they didn't introduce back then was the cost of the 40kw battery. Given the e version is due out because of European and Chinese air quality I wouldn't be suppressed if a technology test mule isn't ticking around once again

    Although i agree the idea of hybrid mini is great on paper, combining comfortable ride of the Countryman, a touring mini with better fuel consumption.
    However, in reality the range is worst than what is given in the base and S model minis due to the batteries limiting fuel tank capacity.
    It was said the S model does roughly 500-540 km of range on full tank (depending on driving). And the SE does 440 to 480 km on full tank.
    Although you may be making better fuel consumption you aren't going as far, which kind of defeats the purpose of the hybrid! If Bentley can make a hybrid V8 go 460 km of range, I'm sure you guys can figure out how to increase the range as well.
    Overall you'll probably be better off with the non hybid models if you plan on touring with your Countryman.

      True. Also the trunk space is limited. That's why we got the regular S.

    ok, some serious questions need to be answered, is this car 4x4 as it claims? when the front wheels are powered by the petrol engine and the rear by the electric? im waiting for mini to confirm. what happens when you dont have charge left in the electric batteries to power the rear wheels and you need 4 x 4 in ice or snowy situations? Why have mini/bmw failed to supply the domestic charging cable when supplying the hybrids????? All you get is a case to put it in!!!! My mileage is only 24.5 miles to the gallon !! just using the petrol engine and since i picked my new mini phev car up two weeks ago ii still haven't received the domestic charging cable. So unable to charge battery properly !! yes it wasn't supplied when i collected the car.

    I heard the distance it can cover in electric only mode in reality is only about 15 miles. That limits the appeal somewhat. I really want to like this car otherwise.

    Yuck. 12 miles EV range. Only 9.5 gallon gas tank for total of 270 mile range (EV + gas). Not eligible for HOV stickers. What's the point? It's the only PHEV where you have to spend more time at a gas station than a regular ICE car.

    Mini generally is a very overpriced car, with or without electric stuff. No thanks.
