Everytime Gavin smiled, I found myself smirking along with him. When your car is complimented it's really hard not to bubble up with a smile. Genuinely enjoyed the video!
Hi! This is Gavin and thanks for all the comments. Just wanna say thank you again to Matt TheSmokingTire for driving my car so ill be able to learn more.
TheSmokingTire Use a splitter to record one mic on the left channel and another on the right. Then merge both tracks during the editing, so we could hear both voices coming from the screen instead of jumping left to right on wide panorama. Or add some subtitles.
This brz is done really, really nicely. No stupid turbos setups, no stupid wheels nor childish stance, no stupid colors and show off body kits. Good taste, congrats to the owner.
super chargers have some very bad downsides, kid. whatever you choose, it needs to be done right with proper specs. too many idiots want more power and put bigger pulleys than the car engine can handle and something always breaks after a year or two with "do it yourself" super chargers.
I love these videos - so cool to see all the different ways people have tuned their cars. One criticism I have is that it can at times be difficult to hear the passengers: I don't know if Matt has a microphone on him or something, but I think the owners/passengers should get one so they are a bit louder.
Sweet ride! The Brz is such a rewarding car to drive. The first time I got to get behind the wheel of one i was amazed at how easy it was to drive! The fact he learned to drive a stick just goes to show what an amazing car it really is and add those mods boom! The perfect recipe for a daily canyon carver!!
Another great Video! Much appreciated Matt!! I think this was a great idea doing these snake runs! People can really relate on so many levels. And love seeing all the "Tuned" Cars I know I do!!
Perfect, always wanted to see one of these brought up to the power levels they deserve. Nothing over the top, just a small bump to turn this already great drivers car into an amazing one. Good job owner whos name ive forgotten and thanks Matt for showing it to us.
When I had my Supra, I loved the turbo lag. I know that may sound a bit off, especially to a lot of the younger crowd but, applying some medium throttle then a few seconds later, here the turbo spool and that punch in your chest from boost coming on is just awesome. If I had a small, RWD import, I would definitely much rather go for a turbocharger setup. For some reason I just feel superchargers are more for American cars. Not knocking this guy's choice to supercharge the BRZ, just saying it's not the route I would take.
Matt you are fucking awesome, continuing to drive more than one FRS/BRZ and reviewing them , thank you! I am a long time follower, and love that you're a huge car guy! keep em coming dude!
Dude's first car is a manual BRZ and he installs a supercharger on it himself. Seems that he has good taste. My first vehicle was 1981 Datsun 2wd truck. Small 4 banger and 5 speed. It was fun but the kids who get a new/used BRZ as their first car have it so good.
Matt I really appreciate you posting these videos as frequently as you do. I ran across you watching Rob's channel a few years back and you were always funny and straight forward. Anyways thanks for the entertainment over the last few years .
***** True...he did install it himself. I do give him credit for that :) I just thought it was funny at the beginning of video how he answered with "I think so" to two of Matt's questions...all good though :)
***** to be fair, I did jump the gun by saying that. After watching the whole video he did say he installed some stuff himself, so I'll give him some credit where its due. My view on that phrase has nothing to do with who installs it, but more with how you get the car. Either by buying it stock and then messing around with it, or buying someone else's project and not having a clue what is inside of it. I thought Gavin was the latter type until I saw the whole vid.
Heheheheh! I love this kid - he's great. Huge, genuine, smile. He's not being defensive or in any way confrontational about his choices. He modded a car with grounded conservatism, and without changing it into something entirely different - or worse - ruining it, entirely. Good shit. Car looks fun as hell, too.
hahaha I love his 405 comment. I just visited socal from Michigan and drove several times on the 405. What a beautiful road. I wish our highways here were half as nice.
A lot of people seem to be making fun of the fact he bought wheels, coils and a supercharger. I don't get why? Seems like an awesome combination of mods to start with. His car looks awesome with those wheels and a bit of drop. And aren't these cars badly lacking in the power department? So a supercharger or turbo seems like a perfect upgrade. Am I missing something?
This is cool. I've had my eye on the BRZ for quite a while but obviously the typical complaints of power and tire are my issue. This seems like a really nice fix for those problems without turning the car into a typical "tuner" where you cause all kinds of new problems.
Great setup. Enough power to wake the chassis up but not to much to overwhelm it. Not to sure on the coilovers. Looks like the D2s are to stiff for the car like its lost some of its compliancy, however I am sure it's a good setup for track.
TheSmokingTire Could you guys start uploading in 60 fps?? That would seriously take your videos to the next level. Ripping through the canyons in glorious 60 fps would be fkn awesome!
I think TH-cam decides on who gets to upload in 60fps; the function is still being worked on. The announcement they had a few months back was only about TH-cam's ability to 'support' 60fps. Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.
Matt, do you not worry about getting ticketed from your snake drives? (as in, after you post the video) Is that actually a thing? People seem to worry about it.
Pas De MD Alex's reference to statute of limitations was regarding a transcontinental record run, of which he had much evidence on which someone could prosecute. There is no evidence here. There is no speedometer, there is no location tags, date or time tags from when it was shot. All the things you'd need to prosecute me for speeding are absent from this video.
I'm not making the argument that anyone would actually prosecute you--and I definitely don't think they should--but helicopter/plane monitored speed traps use landmarks to calculate an average speed e.g. mile markers. It would be trivial to figure out how fast you were going by using google maps and timestamps. The second half of my question was actually that I'm curious about whether you had heard of this happening to anyone? I know some people put their speedo, which is stupid, but I feel like I've heard of at least one person fined thanks to a youtube driving video (not that my fuzzy memory is proof of anything.)
haha I think Matt is subconsciously craving a supercharged #BRZ. I can't blame him, I've heard really nice things about those cars and I'm sure a supercharger pretty much completes that car.
in about 5yrs from now these cars are going to be dirt cheap, and ppl are going to do insane engine swaps its like the fox body. i would want one for a ls swap project in the future. what a great platform.
A good friend of mine has a Skyline R33 GT-R and another friend of mine has a Skyline R34 GT-T swapped with an RB26DETT. We plan traveling across the United-States (We're from Canada) and go down to California next summer. I wonder if he'd like to drive on of those lol
You should invest into looking for a dyno that can cut you a deal - it would be well worth making a fuel-map and just work that power band. Dyno's are pretty pricy, but well worth the results IMO. Definitely worth at the least checking out!
so for those who have driven both, Supercharger, or turbo charger? - A turbo can be linear so don't challenge that part.. I want to know from someones experience what THEY prefer, because I am considering F.I - I will track my car, but for the most part its a daily that will see winter, and plenty of twisty roads
TheSmokingTire ***** Let me start by saying that I'm NOT trying to be a prick I'm just trying to understand. Furthermore, I very much value your opinion Matt. I love and watch all of your videos.. Now, you said it was a pig, and hes saying its heavier.. the Brz in this video with all the mods it has is about 2800lbs and 290HP the 370z nismo is about 3300lbs with 350HP stock, along with the wider tires and all the other stuff I listed in the first comment.. I am failing to see how it's that much different, on top of that every review I've watched about the 370z shows it puts down good 0-60, good lateral G's, good figure 8 times etc. Can you please enlighten me a bit? I appreciate you communicating with your viewers, especially with me it really means a lot.
Perkuleezful Both cars have very close power/weight ratios. However, being that there is roughly a 500lbs weight difference, it is likely that the lighter car will brake better, carry more speed through corners, and get better fuel economy. Also, there is just a lot less weight transfer going on in the lighter car which is great when you're driving on roads that constantly change direction. Also, you're comparing a vehicle with forced induction to one that is naturally aspirated. While the 370z does have a pretty powerful v6, a lot of that power is still at the top of the rev range. Vehicles with blowers generally feel more eager to get going in the bottom/mid range, which is great for driving on the street.
Perkuleezful Along with the technical differences you must also take into account the level of enjoyment you get out of the two cars when driving them. And the 350z/370z never seem to get people on fire about that. On a scale from 1 to 10 where 1 represents the car driven normally and 10 is the car driven at its maximum limit, the 370z is fun until about 7. Then it kinda falls apart. The BRZ/AE86 is fun from 1 to 10 and the harder you push it, the better it gets. If you're only talking about track times, yeah, probably it's a good comparison. But only on the track.
Stock car have 200hp....after tuning with Vortech it have 325hp, 125hp more than stock. What is the upgrade that he have made to the engine tu support all this power ?
Yeah, I agree with Matt fully on this one. The BRZ is a fantastic platform, but it's definitely underpowered. An extra ~70hp gives it a nice kick in the ass it should have had from the factory, and the motor really responds well to it and it won't cook the stock internals, so yea, a must have for a BRZ, in my opinion, it's the way the car should have came, and for ~25k (if you buy the BRZ 2nd hand) you can have a very fun little roadster.
"Your English is really good." Thinks to self "Shit, I can't believe I said that, better say something else nice next" "...Your car is also really good" lol
Sorry about the noobness but how do i get my eyes on those vids of drive 2...i own a 13 frs, on which i've changed exhaust and tune...and i'm left wanting more...thus the interest on your turbo frs reviews thanks!!!
Hey i got a question, i am not in the US but I am looking to get a fun quick 4 door car, I originally wanted a wrx ot an evo but they are out of my budget reach. I now am looking at either a 2002 b15 sentra spec v with a SR20VE swap or a 2002 yetta vr6 4 cylinder turbo vs v6 almost same HP any idea which is best?
Matt you gotta drive an Innovate/Sprintex supercharged BRZ/FRS. It's a twin-screw supercharger with magnificent torque. I think you would like it just as much as this if not more. With a smaller pulley and and an intercooler, it'll feel way faster than this.
Question for Gavin (or Matt if he can answer): Did you have to upgrade any driveline components to handle the extra power, or did the stock bits work just fine? Also engine internals completely stock as well?
great vid. sent this link to my buddy who has an frs. i want him to do the supercharger kit! we road down to lake powell in his frs and the corners were fun but clearly underpowered from the factory in order to hit the price point they were aiming for. a little odd they didnt make a higher trim level of this vehicle with forced induction and say 80 more horses
Everytime Gavin smiled, I found myself smirking along with him. When your car is complimented it's really hard not to bubble up with a smile.
Genuinely enjoyed the video!
everyone is hatin on the guy for not sounding confident. he's still learning. We all started somewhere. everyone used to be a noob about car stuff.
Did anyone notice he said ".. I really appreciate you letting me drive my car"
Lol I kept replaying it to make sure it wasn't just me
Freudian slip FTW.
We may never know....
He probably really wants one. :)
hahahahaha it's just a joke :v xD
i did not know how Asian i look
What did you think you looked like?
That's hilarious, Gavin. Honestly, you didn't come off like you came from Indonesia as recently as you did. Your accent isn't very heavy at all.
gimmesmorecookies sweater? right on gavin! have fun with ur sick car m8!
Beautiful car Gavin!!
Nice car. Excellent mod choices.
Hi! This is Gavin and thanks for all the comments. Just wanna say thank you again to Matt TheSmokingTire for driving my car so ill be able to learn more.
5:12
"I'm not going to launch the sh*t of your car"
1 sec later
"Do you have launch control on this thing?"
Could you guys mic the passengers when you drive their cars? It can be a bit hard to hear what they're saying over the exhaust drone and vibration.
DarkSky unfortunately the Go Pro we use for interior has only one mic input.
TheSmokingTire Use a splitter to record one mic on the left channel and another on the right. Then merge both tracks during the editing, so we could hear both voices coming from the screen instead of jumping left to right on wide panorama.
Or add some subtitles.
darek4488 GoPro's audio inputs don't work like that, unfortunately.
TheSmokingTire Multiple GoPros edited in something like Adobe Premiere would work.
TheSmokingTire Tell me which version of the GoPro you are using and I'll try to find a solution.
This brz is done really, really nicely. No stupid turbos setups, no stupid wheels nor childish stance, no stupid colors and show off body kits. Good taste, congrats to the owner.
Tiago Bernardo stupid turbo setups? Lmfaoooo
How are turbos stupid? I'm curious, everything else that you said makes sense. But I've never hear anyone call a turbo stupid?
super chargers have some very bad downsides, kid.
whatever you choose, it needs to be done right with proper specs.
too many idiots want more power and put bigger pulleys than the car engine can handle and something always breaks after a year or two with "do it yourself" super chargers.
Here's another tasteful one I found. Guy did it right. Emphasis on reliability. th-cam.com/video/ynyQ6BzqJbg/w-d-xo.html
Turbos are not stupid.
i like these videos better than the videos on drive.
same
these videos are also alot cheaper...
WhahahaLoL Does it matter when the content is more inline with what the viewer enjoys?
Nah just making a comment about the drive+ crap that pairs with his opinion that these vids are better.
I haven't watched drive since they went pay to play.
I really like the one-take series. It's cool to see these relatively inexpensive cars like BRZs and Miatas that the owners have modified.
did anyone else's butt pucker up when that yellow mustang went over the center line?
Were
Yup
Sure did
A nugget slipped out.
When in the video
2:58 Matt: "Holy driver's car batman!"
Completely lost it!
Gavin seems like a quiet dude but a cool guy. You got along really well with him it wasn't as awkward as some of these are lol
I love these videos - so cool to see all the different ways people have tuned their cars. One criticism I have is that it can at times be difficult to hear the passengers: I don't know if Matt has a microphone on him or something, but I think the owners/passengers should get one so they are a bit louder.
Arch I wear a microphone, but the Go Pro only has one audio input.
TheSmokingTire A two way splitter on the mic input might work with a similar lapel.
TheSmokingTire Get a three way splitter and attach one mic to the rear bumper.
***** gopro doesn't recognize a splitter, unfortunately.
TheSmokingTire Well that explains it - it sucks, but thanks for the information. Keep it up!
Sweet ride! The Brz is such a rewarding car to drive. The first time I got to get behind the wheel of one i was amazed at how easy it was to drive! I've pretty much given up on drive since these videos started coming out. Slick BRZ!
i like that guy's smile, smiling almost the whole time!!! :D a face of proud owner!
Perfect, always wanted to see one of these brought up to the power levels they deserve. Nothing over the top, just a small bump to turn this already great drivers car into an amazing one. Good job owner whos name ive forgotten and thanks Matt for showing it to us.

This makes me kind of want an FR-S/BR-Z with a blower. I love how small and light they are.
Matt I really appreciate you posting these videos as frequently as you do. I ran across you watching Rob's channel a few years back and you were always funny and straight forward. Anyways thanks for the entertainment over the last few years .
Gavin: "...it has a Vortech supercharger on it"
Matt: "Which is a centrifugal supercharger, right"
Gavin: "Umm, ya, I think so..."
Bought, not built
*****
True...he did install it himself. I do give him credit for that :)
I just thought it was funny at the beginning of video how he answered with "I think so" to two of Matt's questions...all good though :)

darkstar9008 or because he's iIndonesian, he didn't quite understand the word centrifugal.
darkstar9008 Way to jump the gun. Yeah lets comment on the video before watching the whole thing.
Good review! Man his brz looks great, and good route for the car. Wheel fitment is very important and you got that! Nice ride man
You're a good bloke Matt. Very respectful and encouraging.....Good to see!!!
Does Gavin own this car ? He seem not sure about the car.
I'm sure he's nervous...
he's just star struck
jo23bulls
He is. You can see that he is just listening inventively to what Matt has to say.
It would be hard for me to not be nervous when letting someone else drive my car on the canyons, all while on camera
I bet that he bought the car. Didn't build it.
“I love the clutch on these cars, they got really good feedback and they have a really short clutch.” What car are you driving Matt?
This is the exact kit I was going with if I ever purchased one of these cars. Cool kid, knows whats what in the car scene.
No wonder Gavin's smiling, he's done a balanced job rodding a great little car! He can be proud!
Keep those vids coming Matt, great fun to hear you go on bout these car. It's fun to see you actually enjoying yourself in dailly drivers, ;).
Change the coilovers to KW V2 or try a slightly softer spring that should stop the pogo ride. Stiff springs only work on smooth race tracks.
Is it just me or is matt like super happy and energetic in this vid? Lol super friendly too lol
1:35 Where they filmed that canyon scene in FF7? Correct me if I'm wrong.
TST, Matt these are fun videos, i'm liking them
All of that dust/dirt/salt on the road made me nervous the whole time.
did this feel faster than the st?? surprised you did not mention the fiesta once in this video lol...
i think he made a great choice buying a brz there. Cause here in Indonesia that thing cost 620 million rupiah which is about 70k USD
Critique: Audio is crackly. Love these things dude. Make more and more.
This is cool. I've had my eye on the BRZ for quite a while but obviously the typical complaints of power and tire are my issue. This seems like a really nice fix for those problems without turning the car into a typical "tuner" where you cause all kinds of new problems.
Hi matt,
I'd love a video how you explain things like rev matching, heel toe that kind of tricks to make driving a car more fun!
love these videos Marr, NEVER EVER STOP this series
good video! I enjoy watching you give real feedback on other peoples cars. I wish I lived in LA
Great setup. Enough power to wake the chassis up but not to much to overwhelm it. Not to sure on the coilovers. Looks like the D2s are to stiff for the car like its lost some of its compliancy, however I am sure it's a good setup for track.

Pas De MD no, not really.
ex-post facto!

10:25 "I really appreciate you letting me drive MY car" you mean YOUR car? Haha
Matt...you should do a turbo brz or frs one take vid, i know many would enjoy that
Thanks, i enjoy the one take version!! Keep em coming!!!
axel alejandro santiago I already did two different turbo 86's on DRIVE 2 years ago.
haha I think Matt is subconsciously craving a supercharged #BRZ. I can't blame him, I've heard really nice things about those cars and I'm sure a supercharger pretty much completes that car.

Gavin seems like a really chill guy! Nice car too, tastefully done. :)
at 4:50 That's exactly what I did. Brakes, suspension then power.
I think it's advertised as 296 HP at the wheels. Too lazy to check though.
You should invest into looking for a dyno that can cut you a deal - it would be well worth making a fuel-map and just work that power band.
Dyno's are pretty pricy, but well worth the results IMO. Definitely worth at the least checking out!
Matt would you prefer a turbo to this supercharger?
And have you driven a rotrex based supercharger?

Fun fact - go to google translate , and set input language to auto . Then type 'brz' in , your mind would blow .
+Mladen Milić damn.
Mind... Blown
BRZ=Fast in Bosnian
Matt you forgot to mention how good the fiesta is in comparison to this BRZ... Lol
His brakes are Wilwoods... from the '07/'08 WRX?
When did Subaru have Wilwoods as standard brakes?
in the 07 and 08...
so with tires, suspension, power along with some good brakes.. his car is effectively a 370z with the sport package.. Matt do you like the 370z?
Perkuleezful no, it's a pig.
I'm sure the 370z is a lot heavier which makes everything worse.
TheSmokingTire ***** Let me start by saying that I'm NOT trying to be a prick I'm just trying to understand. Furthermore, I very much value your opinion Matt. I love and watch all of your videos..

Just a random question for anyone to answer.
ADHDJack 2dr rwd wrx would be cool
liamthree
So...a turbo brz basically lol.
ADHDJack awd would just make the brz slower (drivetrain power loss + weight ) but give it more traction, which it doesn’t need lol
Matt's review of this brz's makes me wanna get one.
that start up got the bass in my headphones kicking
"Your English is really good."
Thinks to self "Shit, I can't believe I said that, better say something else nice next"
"...Your car is also really good" lol

Awesome video! Only thing that was missing was Matt comparing it to the Fiesta :( Sweet car, Gavin brah!
maybe some more pre-loading on your springs could get that bounce under control. do the D2's have dampening or rebound control?
Just look at Gavin!
He's so happy!
Really nice video but can i suggest we put a dash cam in to also see speed and rev count?
***** no, that's called "Evidence."
TheSmokingTire Hhahahaha Ok I understand :P
Where can i find the exact supercharger for a 2015 BRZ Limited model
Great review and good car. I thought they tune them with Ecutek which adds flat shifting, blip and launch control? Maybe Gavin doesn't know?
Hey i got a question, i am not in the US but I am looking to get a fun quick 4 door car, I originally wanted a wrx ot an evo but they are out of my budget reach. I now am looking at either a 2002 b15 sentra spec v with a SR20VE swap or a 2002 yetta vr6 4 cylinder turbo vs v6 almost same HP any idea which is best?
smood006 sentras are awesome. Imo
Matt you gotta drive an Innovate/Sprintex supercharged BRZ/FRS. It's a twin-screw supercharger with magnificent torque. I think you would like it just as much as this if not more. With a smaller pulley and and an intercooler, it'll feel way faster than this.
I wonder if that supercharger would work for a WRX
Wow! love the exhaust! Nice build.
290 at the crank? I think so.... How just how
This car is cute... Now where is the Fox body!!!!! updates?
What exactly did he upgrade? It seems really well done.
Question for Gavin (or Matt if he can answer): Did you have to upgrade any driveline components to handle the extra power, or did the stock bits work just fine? Also engine internals completely stock as well?
i didnt need to upgrade any parts of the powertrain and i havent had any problems with the car. so its great that i didnt need to spend more money!
sounds like its the answer to everyone who wanted "moar powar!" in the GT86 twins
the guys can't stop smiling every time Matt gives him compliments lol
Matt, i'm not being a dick.. but if you ever crash, please show the footage!
Btw, these videos are great!
23MPG ?? Is he bouncing it off the rev limiter constantly?
He did pretty good as a first learning experience, kid still has a little more to learn but aside from that, I very much approve
did pretty well*
great vid. sent this link to my buddy who has an frs. i want him to do the supercharger kit! we road down to lake powell in his frs and the corners were fun but clearly underpowered from the factory in order to hit the price point they were aiming for. a little odd they didnt make a higher trim level of this vehicle with forced induction and say 80 more horses
I was about to skim the video until he said he's from Indonesia. 👍 English is on point
TheSmokingTire would you recommend Vortech or Jackson racing for a supercharger?
Is the car still running after 7 years? Serious question.
Poor audio on Gavin. You guys really should have had a mic on him too.
ShermanMR2 the GoPro only has audio input for 1 mic.
It's a shame the wrx four pot willwood actually cover less surface area than the LGT brakes which are only two pot.
