How to Arrange Leaves and Petals on A Stem with watercolour
Today I've answered this viewer's question
"My main problem at this point is arranging the leaves and petals relative to the stem (leaves) and the petals relative to each other. I wind up with the petals either too tight together so that some overlap while I'm left with a gap, or I have the leaves awkwardly placed on the stem. I just don't seem to "get" the proper proportions and angles."

One thing that helped me figure out how to make leaves look reasonable in even a fanciful flower design is to learn the common leaf arrangements, e.g., alternate, opposite, and whorled. Being consistent with the leaf arrangements for a particular flower has made my drawings/paintings seem more organic even though I'm not going for the level of naturalism in a botanical illustration.
