In this edition of Tarikh, Nikhil talks about field development of Statistics in India. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis has been considered the father of modern statistics in India. Mahalanobis is best remembered for the Mahalanobis distance, a statistical measure and innovation in Survey Sampling methods. He was one of the members of the first Planning Commission of free India and devised the Second Five Year plan. He may be a good statistician but he was the worst when it came to economics and public policy. This Mahalanobis was the biggest asshole responsible for India's hard left policies and Govt control of most of the core industries and slowest grow of Indian economy for decades.
