For me is the oposite. Square is so unorecose compared to octo. You can't feel left-right up-down. You end up presing a diagonal by accident. On octo you always feel the input. Also the distance between all directions is the same. More consistent moves.
100%. I felt a noticeable difference for the better on an octagon. When I would do fireballs or half circle moves I would either overshoot or undershoot all the time and stay crouching or jump because I could only feel the diagonal corners in my hand while playing. That problem is eliminated with the octagon. Literally nothing feels better. Can't beat it
I think an octo would be good if it was like a square gate but with some notches for the cardinal directions, or, in another manner of speaking, an octo with shallower up down left right notches.
Bought both myself and my buddy arcade sticks, I changed to 8way and he stayed with square, and there was a noticeable disparity between what skills were replicable from controller. He was able to perform almost every combo he knew on pad, I kept miss stepping, inputting the wrong directions at the wrong times. I chalked it up to him just taking better to the arcade stick than me. This has convinced me to switch back to square.
It's about getting used to. At this point I don't even use Octagonal Gate I use Circular because I Already muscle memory the corners of the circular gate. Of course I still made mistakes sometimes but I'm faster using the Circular gate than using the Square Gate.

The only reason people use octogates is because they always hear newbies talking about when they mod there sticks there putting in octogate. Octogates fucking suck and make it harder to play
I bought octo gate just in case when I bought the 8bitdo arcade stick but looks like Square gate is the way to go with fighting games. I wasted 6 bucks. XD

Nah they are kinda better for everything. Since in addition to making your corners easier to find, they reduce the travel distance when hitting the cardinal directions, making your inputs much faster. I was a disbeliever and thought the prevalence of square gates was simply down to tradition, but after lots of testing even I have to admit the naysayers were right. Square gates are simply better.
@@mikeandroid3512 Not really, square gate has plenty of benefits for all characters as it just makes certain important moves much more reliable, like crouch-blocking, jumping forward/back and other stuff mentioned in this video. Square simply makes diagonals stronger and easier to find without doing unwanted things - there's a reason most sticks have a square gate when you buy them - it's a good option used by a lot of the best players. I recommend trying square for a few weeks/months, then change if you want to try octo once you're familiar enough to tell the difference.
