Back when MTV actually showed music videos. And they played them around the clock.If you weren’t careful, you could spend hours on the couch watching them. The early 80’s just exploded with new groups that hit it big thanks to MTV.
The guitar parts on this song are performed by Steve Lukather of Toto! And the soaring high voice on background vocals is Bobby Kimball. Toto’s original lead singer. ( the guy you heard on “Hold the line”) 😊
The other day I heard "The King of Wishful Thinking" by Go West in the grocery store -- and I thought "Jay and Amber would like this song." The tail end of the 80s... end of my 20s... and it was my anthem for getting over a relationship. It worked. 😄 The 90s -- and my 30s -- were great!

First came from early New Orleans jazz then to rockabilly, slap bass became famous and profound with Larry Graham who became part of Sly and the Family Stone. The baton was passed in the 70s to Bootsy Collins of Parliament and Stanley Clarke in the jazz world. Then Mark King pick up the torch and he set the 80s on fire with his style. Check out "Lessons in Love" to really catch his playing. Other superb slap bassists are Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and jazz great Marcus Miller.
A lot of folks thought The Tubes were a simple one-hit wonder 80s band, but they been around since the mid 70s, and had released a couple albums of weird, glammy and sarcastic prog rock which predated punk/ new wave in terms of attitude, but way more musically adventurous (ie. their debut album, from 1975, featured a song called "White Punks On Dope"). Once the 80s hit, they streamlined their sound to fit in perfectly with the more synth-happy FM radio times. This song was huge (I remember seeing their performance of this song on the "Solid Gold" TV show when I was 10).
Love the song, "White Punks On Dope"...much prefer it to "She's A Beauty. It's more interesting than the synth stuff (not that I have anything against 80's synth); I just love "White Punks"...always have.

I think they would like both. For a weird one - What Do You Want from Life. I think they're all here on YT.

If you listen to the lyrics, they're referring to peep shows. Back then, men would go to a place where they would each sit in their own little private room. There were many of these little private rooms next to each other. Each room had a window in it that was covered. On the other side of all these windows, there was a scantily clad or nude woman. A guy would go into his own tiny private room and put money into the slot and the window would automatically be uncovered and he could see the woman on the other side of the glass. He would watch her. Then when his time was up, the window would be covered again. If he put more money in, the window would be uncovered again. This was a peep show. It was common back then. So listen to the lyrics and you'll see what he's talking about. You can see an example of a peep show in Madonna's video "Open your heart to me". *****************EDIT**************** Since some people in the reply section are assuming I'm a perv and I've been to these peep shows just bc I described it, I'll have you know that I was a little girl when these peep shows were around. The only reason I know what they were like is BC I watched Madonna's "Open your heart" video!! Sheesh!!
Madonna's video for "Open Your Heart" is a decent (but over simplified and clean) demonstration of what peep shows were like. Interestingly, both videos feature inappropriately young boys for the context of the videos being about peep shows.

@@dalee72 - I guess all my time hanging out with strippers clouded my view on that video. I just assumed it was her son, waiting outside for her to get off work. Madonna was 28 and Felix Howard (the young boy) was 13 when that video came out. A plausible age difference for mother and child for someone working in that industry.

I just thought of the boy as fan of Madonna's stripper character. And at the end she was or became his friend and older sister figure. Also the video was Madonna's homage to Liza Minelli's Cabaret and Marlene Dietrich's Blue Angel films. And also another difference is at the end of the Tubes' video the boy turned old by being exposed to adult entertainment and got "corrupted".
There's a movie where that is a main plot device. I can't remember the name of it, but a man goes to one of those and finds himself peeping at his ex wife. I think it's set in Texas.

Fun fact: When this video was shown on MTV back in the 80s, the "nipples on the drums" were blurred out, so as not to turn on the teenage boys like myself. LMAO! Also, I see Amber spotted them, but didn't SAY anything. Then again, she didn't have to... her face said it all! I love it!
I am so lucky to have seen the Tubes twice live. They weren't just a late 70's rock group, they were a performance-art act. Fee Waybill and the band members interacted with dancers and props on stage that told a story for each song. Look up "White Punks on Dope" and "What Do You Want from Life", and later their album "Young and Rich" ("Brighter Day" and "Pimp") to get a feeling for their art form that inspired those who came later, especially hip-hop artists.
Fee Waybill and The Tubes were such an underrated band. I loved them back in the day. Talk to Ya Later was a hard rocking tune and She's a Beauty is a great video. Some other 80s bands to check out are The Rockets, The Romantics, and The Kingbees.
Fee Waybill wrote the lyrics after being propositioned in San Francisco to go into a private booth peep show - which he did. He offered the dancer a job dancing on stage - she passed. The music is all the magic of Steve Lukather from Toto. They added this song at the last minute because the record company felt they had no singles on the album.
The Tubes are AWESOME! I've seen them live many times. They're SO much fun! Try Don't Touch Me There, White Punks On Dope, What Do You Want From Life, Mondo Bondage, Remote Control... there are SO many great songs.
I got to see this very band this past summer in my hometown's rock festival, and HOLY COW! These guys may be old enough to be grandpas, but WOW! I loved their show and was dancing the whole time. I even got cheered on by the crowd for air-guitaring this song's riff! The Tubes rock hard, no matter what the decade!
The tubes were always an underground favorite out of San Francisco from the late 1960s they were the inspiration for punk music (as their song "I Was a Punk Before You Were a Punk!" says). They were almost more performance artists than musicians and their 1970s concerts often turned into near riots! Their last two albums were more mainstream and were played a lot on MTV. Songs to try "Talk to ya Later", "Loves a Mystery", and bangers "Stand up and Shout" and their cover of "I Saw Her Standing There".

This was one of our one hit wonders from the 80's.... I bought the 45rpm record in 1983 when this song came out. This song brings me back to 16 yrs old and living at home. It was the best time to live. Old songs bring me back to a moment in time with memories of hearing it at a specific age and where I was listening to it at the time. My first album I ever bought was Andy Gibb Shadow Dancing back in 1978... My first 45 single was YMCA from the Village People. How times have changed. LOL

The Tubes were prominant mostly in the 80s, with this song being recorded in studio with members of both Toto and Chicago. Their 1981 album "The completion backwards principle" features the catchy and entertaining "Talk to ya later" as well as the power balled "Don't want to wait anymore."
Steve Lukather from Toto played guitar on this and Co-Wrote the song. You can also hear Bobby Kimball from Toto on background vocals in the chorus. Talk To Ya Later by the Tubes is another Lukather track.

Two albums are in my rotation: - Outside Inside The Tubes - The Completion Backwards Principle Both albums show the spectrum, talent, and tightness of this band, and Fee Waybill on vocals is an extra treat. I dare you to react to "Attack of the 50 ft Woman"! You won't be disappointed. It never hit the radio, but it's well worth the time.
The guitar player is Steve Lukather from Toto. He co-wrote the song with David Foster and The Tubes' singer, Fee Waybill. The same guys wrote Talk To You Later. But honestly, don't expect this kind of song from anything else The Tubes have to offer.

Excellent choice! Tubes were definitely one of the coolest bands from the early 80s - I was fortunate to see them in concert 1985 at San Diego State University open air theater, they (especially singer Fee Waybill) were incredible performers / entertainers. Also, the opening act was Michael Bolton, in his pre-crooning rocker days.
The kid in the video, Alexis Arquette, grew up to play George, the Boy George lookalike, in "The Wedding Singer," who only knew "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me." That character was great. Lead guitar on this song is played by Steve Lukather, of Toto, who also played lead on Michael Jackson's "Beat It," as well as five gazillion other hit songs 🙂😃.

I could write books about my experiences growing up in the 70's and 80's. I was born in '71 and graduated in '89. Life was simpler back then. No internet. No cell phones. You actually spent most of your day outside and you felt fulfilled. The music was the best. I used to listen to 80's on my clock radio in my bedroom, and record the songs on my tape recorder. I used to listen to American Top 40 with Casey Kasem. There were so many awesome things about the 80's. Going to the theater and watching the movies that are now genre-defining classics. What a great time to live. I wish it could be expressed how great the decade was, but you can't really understand unless you lived it.

Born in 1965 and I spent so much time going to concerts in the very late 70s and throughout the 80s, that most of the memories in my life centre around rock and metal music.
My kids are all three irritated that they didn’t grow up in the 80’s like I did. They are fans of all of it. The movies, the music, even the fashion. Actually I wasn’t a huge fan of the fashion. 😂
“Talk To Ya’ Later” is another good Tubes song that rocks out. “Tip of my tongue” is another song that rocks it, and has the horns you like so much as well. The Tubes stage show was definitely “Out there”back in the day.

Rosanna was in the Madonna movie Desperately Seeking Susan and was also assumed to be subject of the ‘80s “Rosanna” song from Toto (dated one of the members around that time)…what a web!
Early definitive Tubes is White Punks on Dope from the live album "What do you want from live" - crazy, crazy live shows. Saw them in '79 in Hanover Germany. Canadian kid backpacking thru Europe, Got to meet singer Fee Waybill, he said "we had to clean up our act because we got banned in so many cities", because of, you know, nudity on stage.
The kid on the ride in the video is Alexis Arquette, who was 12 years old at the time and known as Robert Arquette. She later appeared in the movie The Wedding Singer as George, a Boy George impersonator who sings "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?" Arquette ended up in the video because of the group's Toto connection: his sister Rosanna, namesake of the 1982 Toto hit, was dating Steve Porcaro of Toto, the bandmate of "She's A Beauty" co-writer Steve Lukather. Rosanna Arquette was also friends with the guys in The Tubes.

As a previous commenter noted, the Tubes had been around since the mid 70's. My indoctrination to the band was a live album from the late 70's titled "What do you Want From LIVE". Songs titled "White Punks on Dope", I Was a Punk Before You Were", "God Bird Change" and "Don't Touch Me There" were pretty mind blowing in the 70's. My Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd friends thought I had lost my mind to listen to The Tubes. Their music was definitely a "vibe" that was hard to explain for the times!

This song was awesome blasting in the car. That synth intro and then the drum kicks. Another song that had an intro that was great for this was "Affair Of The Heart" by Rick Springfield. Also "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by the Scorpions.
"outside inside" from which is the first track is my alltime favourite rock album. it starts with this banger, followed by another banger with "no not again" and when you think it cant get more powerful, "out of the business" comes... but when looking at the credits of that album (nearly full toto band, produced by david foster, songs from curtis mayfield and maurice white cowritten) you understand why this album is such a smasher...
Oh my gosh. I love seeing this again. When I was younger, we'd see the Tubes every time they came around. Some information about them.... what you saw in the video was what the concerts were like. Just about every song had dance numbers or props or costumes, and the singer (Fee Waybill) would be all over the stage. For "The Wild Women of Wonga" he'd come swinging out on a vine onto the stage wearing a loincloth. For "Mondo Bondage", he'd wear full S/M leather. For "Don't Touch Me There", he'd ride out on a motorcycle. And the highlight was during "White Punks on Dope" when he'd dress up like an English glitter rocker named Quay Lude, wearing a silver wild wig, silver spandex, 18-inch platform boots, and glasses that lit up spelling "QUAY". It was like going to a circus. They had the most fun concerts I've ever been to, and all of the music was top-notch! What a great band!
Yes first time I seen them in 75 youngstown ohio nobody in that place was ready for what was about to happen lol..very good musicians but the theatrics was something else ...went a week later to pittsburgh seen them again so good ..there is a double album live concert that was the shows they were doing then ..I still have it shows pics from them shows ..what a trip
What a time to be alive! Turned 18 in 82, had a 72 Cutlass blasting this song pulling into the employee parking lot at the mall. Had 3 jobs there at one point. FT Chick-fil-A 8-4 M-F, PT at the popcorn shop and Spencer’s. Uniform @CFA, dress shirt and tie at Spencer’s, and jeans and concert shirts at the Corn Popper. Work all day, party all night, maybe catching a nap&shower, maybe not. Wish I still had that energy and drive.

The only reason I know what they were like is BC I watched Madonna's "Open your heart" video!! Sheesh!!
Madonna's video for "Open Your Heart" is a decent (but over simplified and clean) demonstration of what peep shows were like. Interestingly, both videos feature inappropriately young boys for the context of the videos being about peep shows.

@@dalee72 - I guess all my time hanging out with strippers clouded my view on that video. I just assumed it was her son, waiting outside for her to get off work. Madonna was 28 and Felix Howard (the young boy) was 13 when that video came out. A plausible age difference for mother and child for someone working in that industry.

I just thought of the boy as fan of Madonna's stripper character. And at the end she was or became his friend and older sister figure. Also the video was Madonna's homage to Liza Minelli's Cabaret and Marlene Dietrich's Blue Angel films.
And also another difference is at the end of the Tubes' video the boy turned old by being exposed to adult entertainment and got "corrupted".
There's a movie where that is a main plot device. I can't remember the name of it, but a man goes to one of those and finds himself peeping at his ex wife. I think it's set in Texas.

Fun fact: When this video was shown on MTV back in the 80s, the "nipples on the drums" were blurred out, so as not to turn on the teenage boys like myself. LMAO! Also, I see Amber spotted them, but didn't SAY anything. Then again, she didn't have to... her face said it all! I love it!

I am so lucky to have seen the Tubes twice live. They weren't just a late 70's rock group, they were a performance-art act. Fee Waybill and the band members interacted with dancers and props on stage that told a story for each song. Look up "White Punks on Dope" and "What Do You Want from Life", and later their album "Young and Rich" ("Brighter Day" and "Pimp") to get a feeling for their art form that inspired those who came later, especially hip-hop artists.
Uh their big time was in the 80's.

Fee Waybill and The Tubes were such an underrated band. I loved them back in the day. Talk to Ya Later was a hard rocking tune and She's a Beauty is a great video. Some other 80s bands to check out are The Rockets, The Romantics, and The Kingbees.

Fee Waybill wrote the lyrics after being propositioned in San Francisco to go into a private booth peep show - which he did. He offered the dancer a job dancing on stage - she passed. The music is all the magic of Steve Lukather from Toto. They added this song at the last minute because the record company felt they had no singles on the album.
Always loved this song, and I would have never guessed it was by The Tubes. So lucky to live all through the 80's music......
Love me some Tubes. First heard them sing “white punks on dope” and never looked back. Their album “Remote Control” is in my personal top 10.
The Tubes are AWESOME! I've seen them live many times. They're SO much fun! Try Don't Touch Me There, White Punks On Dope, What Do You Want From Life, Mondo Bondage, Remote Control... there are SO many great songs.
I got to see this very band this past summer in my hometown's rock festival, and HOLY COW! These guys may be old enough to be grandpas, but WOW! I loved their show and was dancing the whole time. I even got cheered on by the crowd for air-guitaring this song's riff! The Tubes rock hard, no matter what the decade!
The tubes were always an underground favorite out of San Francisco from the late 1960s they were the inspiration for punk music (as their song "I Was a Punk Before You Were a Punk!" says). They were almost more performance artists than musicians and their 1970s concerts often turned into near riots! Their last two albums were more mainstream and were played a lot on MTV. Songs to try "Talk to ya Later", "Loves a Mystery", and bangers "Stand up and Shout" and their cover of "I Saw Her Standing There".

*FUN FACT* The boy riding "The Beauty" is Alexis Arquette, who starred in "The Wedding Singer" as the keyboard player in the wedding band. Also, the trapeze artist is the same one who was in "Xanadu" with Olivia Newton-John.

The Tubes were prominant mostly in the 80s, with this song being recorded in studio with members of both Toto and Chicago.
Their 1981 album "The completion backwards principle" features the catchy and entertaining "Talk to ya later" as well as the power balled "Don't want to wait anymore."

Steve Lukather from Toto played guitar on this and Co-Wrote the song. You can also hear Bobby Kimball from Toto on background vocals in the chorus. Talk To Ya Later by the Tubes is another Lukather track.

The guitar player is Steve Lukather from Toto. He co-wrote the song with David Foster and The Tubes' singer, Fee Waybill. The same guys wrote Talk To You Later. But honestly, don't expect this kind of song from anything else The Tubes have to offer.
The keyboard player is Vince Welnick, who later joined The Grateful Dead in 1991; replacing Brent Myland (R.I.P.) who died about a year earlier.

Excellent choice! Tubes were definitely one of the coolest bands from the early 80s - I was fortunate to see them in concert 1985 at San Diego State University open air theater, they (especially singer Fee Waybill) were incredible performers / entertainers. Also, the opening act was Michael Bolton, in his pre-crooning rocker days.
This is a 80s song that absolutely NEVER ages. Some are corny and you can really hear it being dated but this is untouchable.
The kid in the video, Alexis Arquette, grew up to play George, the Boy George lookalike, in "The Wedding Singer," who only knew "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me." That character was great.
Lead guitar on this song is played by Steve Lukather, of Toto, who also played lead on Michael Jackson's "Beat It," as well as five gazillion other hit songs 🙂😃.

I could write books about my experiences growing up in the 70's and 80's. I was born in '71 and graduated in '89. Life was simpler back then. No internet. No cell phones. You actually spent most of your day outside and you felt fulfilled. The music was the best. I used to listen to 80's on my clock radio in my bedroom, and record the songs on my tape recorder. I used to listen to American Top 40 with Casey Kasem. There were so many awesome things about the 80's. Going to the theater and watching the movies that are now genre-defining classics. What a great time to live. I wish it could be expressed how great the decade was, but you can't really understand unless you lived it.

The Tubes first album came out in 1975 but they didn't have a hit until this song came out in 1983. Their music was weird but very rocking at the same time.
I was introduced to the tubes by the constant radio play of WPOD. MTV helped alot here in the 80's though.

As a 80s kid....I love this song
Born in 1965 and I spent so much time going to concerts in the very late 70s and throughout the 80s, that most of the memories in my life centre around rock and metal music.
My kids are all three irritated that they didn’t grow up in the 80’s like I did. They are fans of all of it. The movies, the music, even the fashion. Actually I wasn’t a huge fan of the fashion. 😂
“Talk To Ya’ Later” is another good Tubes song that rocks out. “Tip of my tongue” is another song that rocks it, and has the horns you like so much as well. The Tubes stage show was definitely “Out there”back in the day.

When I first heard this song, I was so moved because I knew music was evolving, faster and faster and it was only gonna get better. I absolutely love this song. I loved when it would come on the radio.

The young boy in the video was Alexis Arquette who (passed away a few years ago) also played the Boy George impersonator in The Wedding Singer, who’s sisters are also famous actresses from the ‘80s-‘90s (still acting a bit today), Rosanna and Patricia Arquette. Rosanna was in the Madonna movie Desperately Seeking Susan and was also assumed to be subject of the ‘80s “Rosanna” song from Toto (dated one of the members around that time)…what a web!
Early definitive Tubes is White Punks on Dope from the live album "What do you want from live" - crazy, crazy live shows. Saw them in '79 in Hanover Germany. Canadian kid backpacking thru Europe, Got to meet singer Fee Waybill, he said "we had to clean up our act because we got banned in so many cities", because of, you know, nudity on stage.

The kid on the ride in the video is Alexis Arquette, who was 12 years old at the time and known as Robert Arquette. She later appeared in the movie The Wedding Singer as George, a Boy George impersonator who sings "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?"
Arquette ended up in the video because of the group's Toto connection: his sister Rosanna, namesake of the 1982 Toto hit, was dating Steve Porcaro of Toto, the bandmate of "She's A Beauty" co-writer Steve Lukather. Rosanna Arquette was also friends with the guys in The Tubes.

As a previous commenter noted, the Tubes had been around since the mid 70's. My indoctrination to the band was a live album from the late 70's titled "What do you Want From LIVE". Songs titled "White Punks on Dope", I Was a Punk Before You Were", "God Bird Change" and "Don't Touch Me There" were pretty mind blowing in the 70's. My Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd friends thought I had lost my mind to listen to The Tubes. Their music was definitely a "vibe" that was hard to explain for the times!

This song was awesome blasting in the car. That synth intro and then the drum kicks. Another song that had an intro that was great for this was "Affair Of The Heart" by Rick Springfield. Also "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by the Scorpions.

"outside inside" from which is the first track is my alltime favourite rock album. it starts with this banger, followed by another banger with "no not again" and when you think it cant get more powerful, "out of the business" comes... but when looking at the credits of that album (nearly full toto band, produced by david foster, songs from curtis mayfield and maurice white cowritten) you understand why this album is such a smasher...
Oh my gosh. I love seeing this again. When I was younger, we'd see the Tubes every time they came around. Some information about them.... what you saw in the video was what the concerts were like. Just about every song had dance numbers or props or costumes, and the singer (Fee Waybill) would be all over the stage. For "The Wild Women of Wonga" he'd come swinging out on a vine onto the stage wearing a loincloth. For "Mondo Bondage", he'd wear full S/M leather. For "Don't Touch Me There", he'd ride out on a motorcycle. And the highlight was during "White Punks on Dope" when he'd dress up like an English glitter rocker named Quay Lude, wearing a silver wild wig, silver spandex, 18-inch platform boots, and glasses that lit up spelling "QUAY". It was like going to a circus. They had the most fun concerts I've ever been to, and all of the music was top-notch! What a great band!
Yes first time I seen them in 75 youngstown ohio nobody in that place was ready for what was about to happen lol..very good musicians but the theatrics was something else ...went a week later to pittsburgh seen them again so good ..there is a double album live concert that was the shows they were doing then ..I still have it shows pics from them shows ..what a trip
What a time to be alive! Turned 18 in 82, had a 72 Cutlass blasting this song pulling into the employee parking lot at the mall. Had 3 jobs there at one point. FT Chick-fil-A 8-4 M-F, PT at the popcorn shop and Spencer’s. Uniform @CFA, dress shirt and tie at Spencer’s, and jeans and concert shirts at the Corn Popper. Work all day, party all night, maybe catching a nap&shower, maybe not. Wish I still had that energy and drive.
My husband dedicated this song to me when we first started dating. He totally won me over and I will always love this song because of that.
