Royal Marines train for HUGE NATO exercise in Norway

- British commandos have been training for one of NATO's biggest exercises in Norway.
Exercise Cold Response ensures allied forces remain at high readiness, prepared to serve in one of the world's most challenging environments.
However, since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the fictional scenario it's followed for years of a sovereign nation being attacked feels all too real.
We were given special access to their warfare and amphibious training ahead of the exercise.

Such difficult and dangerous work. Thank you all for your service.
So, basically, this is the operation that covered the Nordstream sabotage by the American special forces and their Norwegian accomplices, as recently unmasked by a famous investigative journalist from the New York Times... Interesting
Given the need to project power at short notice around the globe, it makes a huge amount of sense to me to expand the Royal Marines, and the amphibious capacity of the RN. The RM's are superb soldiers- bordering on SF, given the diverse range of their skills and abilities. There are none better at their role- including the American's. We need more of them, a larger more potent RN. The ability to park a carrier battle group offshore, accompanied by a powerful rapid deployment force would represent a major boost in military capability for Britain. What we have is superb, we just don't have enough of it! UP THE ROYALS! *RESPECT* from an ex-infantryman.
Well said. More will be asked so more men and equipment are needed, as well as stuff to protect their actions.
I agree with everything you said but sadly not sure how easy it would be to expand their numbers without the inevitable lowering of standards. Their small number highlights just how few can make the standard.
Don't know why the jab at Americans...we protect NATO more than any other, although we're glad to have our fantastic allies in NATO.
@@Kaiserland111 It’s not really a jab. Simply other NATO marines are different to the American marines.
@@Kaiserland111 Don't think it was a JAB. None better, essentially as good as. Not worse or better. Equal

Increase military spending as much as Germany our current military status is shameful
exactly from controlling half the world with a good size army of 700.000 to 190.000 and a lack of equpiment
@@officialJoebiden might have something to do with the fact we aren't in control of over a 1/3 of the world's surface anymore? I dunno just putting it out there...
@@officialJoebiden Doesn’t a very large army only threaten and escalate war and arms further. It is better to have a quality well trained smaller army with the latest technology than try to show off with many obsolete tanks for example. The nature of modern warfare has changed and what worked in the past is not what will lead the U.K to its future which is what Putin’s army is only beginning to learn with outdated machinery and tactics.
@@ianarn right so we just sit here unprepared like we have been for every war?
@Ryan ok and what is your point maybe if we stop giving out benefits to people who are fit to work

Thank you. This was a fascinating insight into the great detail your forces go to to keep their men safe.
Jeez in my day 45Cdo Zulu we used to swim ashore with speedos on.... Clockwork North 80s ;-)
The Royals are probably my favourite fighting force. I'm so glad they weren't folded into the RN in the last round of defence cuts.
They’re part of it and have been part of it since inception

Royal Marines : Well done lads, now we do it at night, blindfolded, hands bound....under live fire.
Russian conscript : Hello, we've shot our C/O, we want to surrender please. God Save the Queen !
Very good just a shame we have such limited budget & resources in this area.
That'll likely soon change in response to the eastern threat.
The Russians appear to have struggled to modernise, strategically Putin's threats backfire and they have an aging population with very low birth rate. They have to suspect moles and apportion blame, playing a survival game.
Basically the ex-USSR occupied countries have been vindicated, while the shock of Germany's strategic trade decisions will have a chilling effect on private investment.
We are very aware of our shortcomings but tend (rightly) to overestimate the adversary's conventional capabilities.
@@RobBCactive interesting analysis, thank you.

There are still young educated Russians leaving by rail (200k) a whole city of workers.
Russian air force procurement dropped to about 30-35 jets annually after 2014.
I cannot see how Russia can afford a cold war nevermind a hot one, they modernised slower than the USSR stock ages under the 2014 sanctions.

What do you mean by rough weather? This is the way the weather always is here at this time of the year.
It looks awfully chilly.
Looking at its waterline, it appears to be significantly down astern. Is that deliberate? eg do they partially flood it once they get on-station to help the amphibious vehicles to deploy etc?
Yes.
I was infiltrated to a beach by the RM back in a previous lifetime, the ride in by rigid raider was one of the most exciting parts of my service, great fun on the beach too letting rip a 200 round belt in short order until everyone else was ashore. Great to see the goings on preparing for such a huge exercise. The boys would be like "Are you kidding? We have to do it again?" If it ever kicks off for real, which looks increasingly possible these days, when it's done for real, it will seem like routine.
Exercises like these are what puts NATO forces above our potential aggressors. We give huge attention and resources to the logistics

These guys are bad-ass and train in that environment, how about the people that work in that environment all year round, like the Norwegian military? :o
Yeah right. Imagine their house wife's, farmers, fishermen, craftsmen and all the rest busy making Arctic Norway running on a daily basis 🌬️☃️🌨️😱🤣🤣
I'm no expert but is this the only craft, I feel this leaves us exposed. Feel this needs more investment for the northern flanks.
HMS Albion has a sister ship HMS Bulwalk which is currently in extended readiness meaning if a crisis broke out she could be activated within 7 days. Both ships were nearly scrapped a couple years ago as part of defence cuts but luckily that decision was reversed

Please don't send them away to fight and die needlessly
