  • Åstol is the small island with white wooden houses, surrounded by barren cliffs that seem to rise from the sea. The island is located between Tjörn and Marstrand on the Bohuslän coast and is most easily reached by passenger ferry from Rönnäng. A day trip is enough to walk around the car-free island, enjoy the beautiful views, the boathouses and not least the cliffs.
    Volcanic rock island
Whether you have climbed up to the Tjörnehuvud viewpoint, which is located on Tjörn, and look out over the seascape and horizon, or travel to the island via the Marstrandsfjord, Åstol is a peculiar sight. The unique rocky island appears as if it were the path from the North Sea, with a myriad of white wooden houses that cover basically the entire island.
The foundation consists of well-polished mountains of the volcanic rock amphibolite, and in the narrow valleys, plants have taken hold despite the barren nature. What characterizes the entire island is the light from the surrounding sea. Here, the vagaries of the weather have ruled and placed over the inhabitants of Åstol, who have defied the forces of nature and given life to the island.
