Buddy. Yeah, he was 'just' a dog. But it was just him and me for a lot of years. Knowing he was home and loving me kept some depression I had from becoming much much worse, I'm sure of it.
I've often wondered why I was not consumed with grief after I had Buddy put to sleep. He was fine on Thanksgiving day 2015, but the day after he wouldn't eat and just wanted to lie around. Over the following weekend, I considered taking him to emergency care, but he started eating a bit of turkey & rice that I made for him, so I figured he'd be okay until Monday to see the vet. They got me in pretty quickly Monday morning and couldn't tell what was wrong, so sent me to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital for more thorough tests. They found that he had an anal gland carcinoma which involved his lymph nodes, and after an x-ray discovered it had already spread to his lungs. Any treatment would just be palliative. So, I took him back home with some pain meds for him, and waited to see how he would do.
Buddy went downhill quickly. By Wednesday, I knew I didn't want him to suffer anymore, so scheduled a veterinarian to come to my house to put him to sleep on Friday. Thursday was spent doing things Buddy liked to do, and could still do. We took a long car ride to his favorite boarding kennel, where he rallied and ate lots of treats. But that evening he wouldn't eat again, and was panting. I thought he was in pain, and I didn't want that to continue.
So, on Friday, the veterinarian came. Buddy was actually having a pretty good morning, but I knew it couldn't last. Anal gland cancer is almost always fatal, unless found in its early stages. In Buddy's case, the cancer had spread throughout his body.
I put on soft music, let Buddy & my other dog Scout rest in his favorite spot - in the bed in my guest room with windows overlooking the street. I had a bit of alone time with just Buddy after he had received a sedative. The sedative was stronger than I had thought it would be, and Buddy completely conked out. So, I had the veterinarian let Scout back in the room, and Buddy got the final injection.
It was all rather peaceful, and almost 'beautiful'. Buddy passed without incident, and Scout & I got to say our goodbyes. I definitely recommend having your pet put to sleep in your home if at all possible.
I have not experienced the overcoming grief I expected. I think that is for three reasons. 1) Scout was still there and needed me, 2) the euthanasia done at home was comforting, but I think the main reason is shown in this video - 3) Buddy's final 8 months (with Scout) were very happy for him. We went out to parks and adventures more than ever before. I feel good that Buddy had such a great summer and fall.
Of course, I so wish he were still here. Scout could have used his continued guidance as she grew into adolescence. I have a new 2nd dog now. He and Scout are great pals, but he is young, generally fearful, and can't provide Scout with the calm confidence and stability that she was used to. I've taken on that role now. That added responsibility of having two adolescent dogs, one of which is fearful, takes a lot of time. But, it also keeps my depression away.
I miss, however, having my longtime companion. Buddy and I just knew how to get along together. Eight years will do that. I wish it could have been longer.

Man, this hits me right in the feels. I'm putting my buddy Duke down today, 22 August 2023, at 17:00. Had him since he was a pup, 13 years old. I will miss having him on the road with me, I will miss the protection he offered my wife and kids and my home when I'm away. I will miss his gentleness and goofy expressions. I will miss his unconditional love that he gave me. We grayed out at the same time, lol. The Vet said he wouldn't last the weekend and he waited until I came home. My son is just devastated but understands that this is life and that we all have a date. I will lay my best friend to rest in my backyard, so that he will always know that he's home. Here's to my friend Duke. The best pal I could have ever asked for. Thank you for sharing Buddy with us.

I recently lost a dog too.... Actually my best friends dog but i was bonded with him over 2 years.... He got attacked by some big dogs a few months ago
The worst part is that i wasnt able to say goodbye...... My friend lived a while away and my parents were both at work
My mom was bonded with Slick (The dog that passed away) We cried as soon as we found out....
Then another friend of mine had a dog that looked like Slick, so he let me watch over and hang with his dog...
I suffer from depression and anxiety..... And my therapists are my dogs..... Even if they arent mine
They all help me..... I have a dog that also has anxiety..... He is always there for me even when he is suffering....
And then im there for him when im suffering.... and we get thru everythng jus fine.....

I saw this memorial crying. On 22 July 2022 I also had to ask a vet to come to my house to allow my dog Alonzo, labrador crossbreed to rest. By the way, he looked a lot like Buddy!!! But he lived almost until he turned 17. For the last 10 months with kidney failure... He passed away sleeping in my son's bed, where he loved to stay, at the sound of relaxing music with all the family around. A painful moment, but that turned out to be beautiful for the much Love that was surrounded him!!! May Buddy and Alonzo have met and become good friends in heaven (Alonzo was very friendly with all dogs!!).
God bless your brokenheart & God bless your precious, Alonzo's soul. He was a gorgeous boy. ❤❤❤❤

Thank you for sharing your time with Buddy and Scout. I had to send my baby to doggie heaven this year in March, 2023. It is tough but I get joy when I think of her in heaven free where there is no pain. Only joy. Can't wait to see her once again. On June 4th, 2018 I did the same for my Much Beloved Service Dog, An 11 year old Doberman Pincher named Honey! I held her in my arms while the Vet helped her leave her pain behind. Never a sick day in her life, but someone screeched her name when she was playing queen of the hill on a pile of ice. She fell off and the next day she could not walk. Six weeks I cared for her and I kept telling her she would be okay after she rested & one day she would come to me in the morning and put her majestic head on my lap. It TRULY happened six weeks after she fell. The same person screeched at her and she fell again. I took her to the vet both times, but this time there was no use of her back legs at all. I took care of her for a month this time & the last Sunday she lived, I asked her if she wanted to go be with Sissy. She and her half sister Cally loved each other more than words can convey. Cally died in 2015. Honey looked up at the ceiling where she always looked when I told her Cally went to Heaven. There was no doubt she wanted to go be with Cally. I promised I would call the Vet Monday morning. Honey met Cally on Rainbow Bridge the next day as her mumma held her in my arms, singing to her "You are My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine" I'll forever love all my Dobergirls, Holly, Candy, Cally & My Precious Honey, and Misty, sweet little cocker spaniel we rescued, we love you too. I know you are happy to have Daddy there with you & all your Sissy's. I Love You My Sweet Girls, Forever & Always! Your Mumma

Oh my gosh, I cried after readinng the part where you'd sing "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine" to her. I always also do the same thing to my dog. And now, we are separated because I have to work overseas. And I miss him so much every day.
I'm a grown man and the tears are raining down. That's all I can say.

Same here, i euthanized my 15 year old friend previous monday 18 October i had him for my 7th birthday, on the last days he started to breath heavily, he was getting very skinny to the bone, he was having extreme epilepsy attacks, couldn't hold his urine etc, and had ( we didn't know until that day ) anemia, he was sleeping all day long and the last day, he didn't want to stand up to go pee before bedtime, he was staring at nothing and was very absent, then we decided to tale him to the vet to ask whats best at this moment, he said, if we look at his quality of life and what he's having to go through, i think its better to let him rest in peace and after he injected the sedative, and right when he injected the actual injection, i broke down... i felt like i was falling through the ground in tears even now, i can't hold myself 😭🤧
My mom and i, decided to let the vet take him to a crematory, so we can take him home in the warm house where he belongs ❤ free from danger and nothing can hurt him anymore.

The hurt goes away in time BUT never leaves. Time passes since we have had to say goodbye but the memories never leave us. I believe in the rainbow bridge

Your video was very well done and made me cry. It brought flowing back to the surface the grief and sadness we experience when we lose our ever loving pup. I had Pluto put to sleep on 9/9/21 and watching the video made it seem like I took him to the vet this morning. I adopted him from the shelter when he was one and I had him for 5 and three-quarters of a year. I miss him so much. I loved looking into his eyes and you can see down to his heart and into his soul and he can do the same. Nothing but love, unconditional love. I hope Buddy and Pluto are playing together in their Heavenly Masters home. I know you will be waiting at the door.
A dogs primary desire is to be loved. Buddy was loved. We celebrate his life.

God, that made me break down, I had to put my beautiful Bucovina LGD to sleep five weeks ago. My first pet at 62yo. It’s broken me, I loved him so much, he was battered and deliberately blinded in one eye and scared all over his face. When we got him I told him no one would ever hurt him again and when when he was drifting off I told him, “didn’t I tell you no one would ever hurt you again…and they didn’t”.

It's the heartbreaking inevitable decision we all have to make when we let these wonderful creatures in to our lives. We just put down out 14 year old golden retriever Angel down on December 5th...we , as you did the right thing and we , as you...we're the last face they saw before closing their eyes fir the last time. What a precious moment. But it doesn't unbreakable our hearts. We will see them again...they will be waiting.

I had a puppy named Bella too. She was a pug and we had her for 5 months (from August-December 2022) and then we gave her to another friend who lives a couple miles away. She's still there as of now

Having been through this twice in my life I know what a painful emotional experience it is. The bond between a human and a dog is a special one. They take a place in our hearts that is simply inaccessible to other humans. No one will ever love you as truly and purely as your dog will. That's what makes saying 'good-bye' so difficult and painful.
People don’t talk enough about how hard it is losing a dog it’s a different type of hurt. They were your best friend even if they couldn’t talk you know they were there for you. My angel would lay with me when I was sad. Was happy when I was home. Even if I just went to check the mail she acted as if I was gone for days. I took her to sleepovers with me. She was the only one I felt like I would always have but I was wrong. I felt like it was all my fault. I miss her. She was all I needed. Now she’s gone and nothing feels right. Nobody talks about the true pain of losing a dog. 💔
Anica, I had to have my cat, Terror, put to sleep on Jan 2nd. I miss her so much! I cant sleep without her snuggled in my shoulder or climbing over my head when I roll over to my other side. She would just purr all the time when I was there. Because of a natural disaster recently I had to stay with family for over a month and they called Terror a daddy's girl after 1 day. She was! She waited for me and never left my side. And now she is gone. I feel lost and broken.

Losing a dog is one of the hardest things I have ever gone through! The pain is so visceral! Remember our times with them is too short. Treat and love them well!
Visceral is the right word indeed. Overwhelming.
It brought back memories of my dog when I had to put him down because of cancer. I stayed with him until the end to make sure he died in my arms. It is the hardest decision to make for anyone's pet but it is the right decision. People often forget, it is not just the length of that life but also the quality. Go in peace knowing that Buddy is in a good place.

My husband and I have a wonderful cat we named Rusty. We picked him up 10 years ago when his eyes first opened and he has been my husbands close buddy since we brought him home. My husband and I are both retired now so I too have gotten very close to our little Rusty. I'm so glad our pets go to heaven too!

What an amazing story! It reminds me of our female Golden, Courtney. What an amazing dog! One day we found her sitting on the warm vibrating pool pump and we kicked her off not knowing what this meant. Only weeks later did we find out. She had cancer and it had metastized. We lost her shortly thereafter. Mom & I were crushed, we had shooed her off from the place that made her feel good and had no idea what was hurting her. Such a brave dog! Buddy's story reminds me so much of Courtney and moved me very deeply. Rest In Peace sweet Buddy and you to Courtney!
Gahhhhhhh. And what a beautiful tribute. The last of my 3 rescues "Mia" gained her angel wings, peacefully at home with a little help from some long time vet friends after a long battle with multicentric b cell lymphoma on October 14, 2021. She was also 9 y/o and a bit. She was loved by our whole community. She also endured Systemic Lupus E. and x2 CCL repairs. This video, so touching and heart wrenching all the same. Thank you for creating and sharing. You gave Buddy a most wonderful and loving life. The heartbreak is unreal. I can relate. Sending you many prayers for peace and comfort from Canada.
Buddy past 7 years ago, but I’m sure you still miss Him . He was a gift from God to you. Your video was a beautiful way to show your love to him. I was touched by it, as I lost my 19 year old Pomeranian💕 🐕 a couple of days ago. Lost her son two years ago at age 14 two years ago. Forever ❤️ 🐕🐕🐕

Absolutely heart wrenching watching this. It brought back the emotional heartbreaking moment when I put my best friend Milo, down on 05/09/22 due to kidney failure. He was almost 14 years old. My other dog, Tori passed away 17/05/21 due to kidney problems as well. She was 13 years old. I still feel them around and out of the blue start crying. Not a day goes by without thinking of them. The grief eases with time but still overwhelmingly painful. Dogs are special and their unconditional love cannot be compared to anything. RIP Buddy.

It’s amazing to realise how a simple love between dog and owner becomes so deep and life altering and how you can’t live without them after they go.Dogs are the single best thing in life hands down.I didn’t want to go on after my first Pomeranian Tiki passed away at ten years old after the vet gave the wrong diagnosis for her after she died I seriously thought about smashing his head in with a crowbar I was so angry with him(obviously )
But then I realised that wouldn’t bring her back I then went through a very serious depression lost my job popped 7 to 10 Vicodin a day to dull the pain and contemplated ending my life,Tiki came to me in a dream and told me she didn’t want me to do that to myself and that wouldn’t make her proud for her daddy to be weak and take the easy way out and hurt your mom and dad.But I did her proud and pulled through

RIP Buddy, thank you for sharing these beautiful memories. I just lost my puppy a few days ago. She looked just like Buddy, had the same symptoms and everything. She would have been 7 yrs old in a few weeks. My heart feels heavy and Idk what I’m going to do without my puppy. But I’m glad they are no longer in pain and running free in doggy heaven 🤍

Thank you for posting this. RIP Buddy. I have a nearly 14 year old chocolate Labrador that I love dearly. His time is getting closer and closer. I have been dreading the day but your video showing how peaceful they slip away has given me a more confidence in the process. I will be upset enough and dont want to see my boy stressed. Such a touching tribute to an amazing love that a great dog like Buddy brings. Tears streaming down my face as I watched the joy of him romping through the woods and lake, then the goodbye scenes. Oddly enough, watching the experience of love and loss that other people go through with their dog, gives me some comfort. Its real raw love at its core. I know I am not alone in my own grief over losing the love of my life- my first ever dog I found at the park roaming around, sniffing. When no one claimed her, I took her in. This video was 8 years ago, and I hope and pray you have found comfort since.
Heartbreaking. My 10 year golden retriever mix had HSA (cardiac tumour) and had to put her down Sept. 6. I adopted her at 8, and only had 2 years with her. The worst day of my life. She was my best friend, so I understand. We do this because we do not want them to suffer - and letting them go this way is more peaceful for them. It's hell for us.
I just suddenly lost my Golden too, sorry for your loss, it’s horrible . She literally just died … fast and I don’t know why
@@marymoonen4001 I'm sorry for your loss. HSA can be sudden. It is hidden until it is too late most of the time. They are great dogs and we lose them too soon. :(
Thank you for Sharing Buddy with us, this is a beautiful tribute. I recently lost my Goldie on the 9th of March and she too had cancer in her bladder that had spread to her anal area. Like you, we didn't really know she was ill until her last day when she hadn't eaten at all and wasn't happy and excited when we woke up in the mornings. She just wasn't her self and we rushed her to the vet where I told him I think my dog is dying from cancer. He went through the door carrying my special friend and came back 20 very long minutes later to confirm my suspicions and we had to say our good byes to her. She gave us almost 12 years together. She was born in the middle of March very close to the day he passed away. I cried when it got to the end of your video. Thank you again for sharing the amazing Buddy with us.

I just watched the who thing throught - smiles, laughter tears. My daughter just had to help her Jack Russel terrier, Budy, make his transition last week. he was my grnd-puppy. We love him. we miss him. Thank you for this treaure - tears and all. Dianne

This endearing video popped up on my TH-cam account. I am so glad I decided to watch it. Beautiful tribute to lovely Buddy. I have a Jack Russell Terrier fur child (Harper) who will soon be 8 years old. He helps make life wonderful for my family and I. It's obvious from the video that Buddy was a sweet fur child and I know he is still greatly missed. People that watch this video will not forget Buddy, including myself. In my opinion, dogs are wonderful companions. Scout and Arnold are so cute. Hopefully, you and your fur children are doing well. Thank you for sharing the video.

Sadness..I can feel it and the heartache in your voice..my throat had such a lump in it from the tears falling down my face..I have been through this more times than I would care too..I am sure Buddy welcomed my beautiful Bull Mastiff at the Rainbow Bridge..what a lovely tribute...be assured you loved him deeply and he couldn't have had a better home...Blessings....
