Interviewer: Why are there no lyrics to Cupid’s Trick on the sleeve?
Elliott: Because they weren’t very good! [laughs] I couldn’t remember why I made them up after the fact. I made them up when I was in a state and they didn’t make any sense later. They also weren’t there because that song isn’t about the words; it’s about the way it sounds. I kept changing the words around, making ‘em make more sense but it just killed it. I just left ‘em.
Interviewer: What are you singing on the chorus?
Elliott: That’s why I didn’t print the lyrics! [laughs]
Interviewer: It sounds like ‘sugar lift me up’, is it ‘sugar’ something?
Elliott: Yeah, but I can’t say because it’s too stupid. I have no idea what I meant by it. At the time it made perfect sense but now I just don’t want anybody to know.

The most streamed songs on this album are the ones featured in the movie Good Will Hunting, great movie and uses the music very well.

Unsurprisingly Elliott was a troubled soul for sure and came close to taking his own life in many ocasions but i don't think one can self stab in the heart twice?? The gf was pretty sus but went under the radar just because he was the way he was. Makes me sad no one ever did a proper investigation into his passing. We lost such a unique talented man

Nah you can stab yourself in the heart twice. Essentially the first stab didn’t hit the heart and the second one did. He was still standing up after that. Your heart can be mortally wounded without you outright dying. Also it’s rare to stab yourself twice but it’s not impossible. So yeah, he killed himself. He kinda warned us incessantly for his entire career. Listen to “king’s crossing”, “A passing feeling”, “fond farewell”, “twilight”… he was writing suicide music right before he was mysteriously stabbed to death next to a suicide note, with only one other person in the house.

Interesting to see the way you reacted to Angeles and Between the Bars. They are both in his top 5 most famous songs. It might take some more listening to get their brilliance. Elliot didn't immediately grab me until I heard Roman Candle which is the most stripped down version of him and then I slowly became a devoted fan for life.

Funny that you heard the Beatles inspiration in Say Yes before getting to the final breakdown which is straight out of A Day In The Life. Would love to see your reaction to his self-titled album, which came right before Either/Or. Elliott is one of the most uniquely special songwriters ever and personally, his self titled is the most crystallized version of an Elliott Smith album. Thanks and great reaction.

Elliott has been my favorite artist since I first heard him in probably 2005. His albums are all unique, but all fantastic. There are no bad Elliott songs.

One of my fave artists, glad you liked him! The albums previous to this were also very acoustic and (in my opinion) were just as good! In his later albums he started exploring more sounds, you'll probably find more Beatles influences in those ones. Hope you delve more into his catalog!

Would totally join the guitar university Elliott Smith shouldve had. Between the Bars is something that kind of waned on me over time...its overplayed, favorite is still Speed Trials and Rose Parade, and maybe Angeles
Edit: on influences...my friend around 2010 heard me listening to Death Cab and told me they were just copying ES
    Lol \_-_-/
Also would like to note that Smith showed his bandmates his first solo stuff when they were together still..said it sounded like Paul Simon!

  • @loam127
    @loam127 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Great, great, album. Elliott was definitely influenced by The Beatles in songwriting--but his particular style ended up being the most direct influence for the current gen of singer/songwriters like Sufjan and Phoebe and others. I hope you react to his self-titled record because I think its the best of his lo-fi-ish semi-acoustic records. After his self-titled he signed a big deal with DreamWorks' record label and started transitioning to a more band/rock oriented sound which I also love but illustrates of bit of a split in his career.
I don't want to seem to reduce Elliott's lyrical content to his addiction but he struggled with alcoholism which became heroin addiction sometime after Either/Or, and throughout his career. A lot of songs double as being about people or relationships but hint about addiction, so it's a worthwhile thing to be aware of.

I never realized with my cognitive brain how much No Name # 5 reminds me SO much of a
cross between Led Zeppelin's " Rain Song", and George Harrison's "Something"....I always kind of knew in
my subconcious -but it wasn't apparent till now. What a brilliant song writer he was.
