    Well, so much for my surge protector not being what I thought it was. Thanks for the useful info, now I'm going to buy an actual surge protector.

    The most common surge protector I see in the field (residential) is installed next to the main breaker panel and tied into a 2 pole breaker. Basically it's a common upgrade when other work is done at the house, like an addition, sub panel, or generator installation. Whet I have to do is remind the customers to check it on a regular basis, especially after a power failure or storm. Look for the 2 lights and if both are not lit then it's no longer protecting.

    How about a video on lightening arrestors? Primarily those that can be mounted in a 200-amp residential breaker box. I have all sorts of surge suppression in my house. Now want to add a lightening arrestor. Ken

      Have not been called lightning arrestors last 10 years or more in NEC for some reason. Large hospital that I retired from had well over a125 pointed rods on roof. We had to PM them every 3 months but seldom found any damaged or missing. You would be better having a licensed company donthe install. They use a large woven aluminum cable that has a little hollow area in center. ( maybe to better distribute heat from a ligjtning stike ).

    Only buy power strip surge protectors if they offer an attached equipment warranty. Because when a surge protector can’t protect anymore you want it to stop passing electricity so you know to replace it.
    If it doesn’t have attached equipment warranty then when it quits protecting it just passes the next surge straight through. I have replaced plenty of computers destroyed by a surge that got through a crappy surge protector.
    The amount of attached equipment warranty really doesn’t matter. $1000 or $1,000,000 both will disconnect the power when they can’t protect anymore.

      I've seen plenty that have an attached equipment warranty but don't disconnect the power when protection is exhausted. You have to look for that detail specifically.

    So i had a 240 volt surge go through my house because the electrical apprentice forgot to screw down the neutral wires on two breakers and the main screw to the neutral buss Barr. It fried a lot of shit. It fried all my pioneer elite TVs and audio receivers we had fire in the monster boxes. Trying to troubleshoot all this is a freaking nightmare!!!! The thing is it fried all the power surge suppressor strips and backups too. What’s the best way to figure out all the hidden damage. I’m worried my refrigerators will not last and its really weird not everything fried . Someone said that the house became a giant capacitor and then it blew.

    Hello, Thank you for great information. I have a question. I am adding a 60 amp sub panel to my small metal shop. The shop is set on dirt. do I need to add a grounding rod? Thanks.

    So a whole house surge protector is a Type 1 and installed between meter and panel?

      Cool for Halloween. Was going to make one to go along with a coffin that had moving lid & hands, tomb stones that swayed back & forth & a few other goodies because one of my sons loved that day more then Christmas.

    Question for anyone that might know: I have a circuit breaker finder and I am trying to replace some outlets. When I go to find the breaker every single outlet in the house says it’s on the same breaker. I flip it and none turn off. Is there something wrong with the wiring or not? Or do I just need to do the old fashioned way of finding the breaker.

    • @richardgray1730
      @richardgray1730 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all breaker finders are created equal. That said my understanding of how the finder works is that the sender adds noise to the line which the receiver hears pointing to a breaker…. My first guess is that the breaker the receiver finds has something out it which is making the same noise louder. Turn that breaker off and retest. That should work.
      My 1st guess is you have some smart device on the circuit making noise. Unplug all devices, turn off all lights and check for smart switches and USB outlets. Now test…

    • @samuelbenton9437

      @@richardgray1730 no smart devices. Nothing plugged in to any outlet. this is an old home, a rental I own. Built in the 80s or so

    • @garbo8962
      @garbo8962 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@richardgray1730 At the large hospital that I retired from we had the best circuit tracer. Amprobe that would be too expensive for homeowner. Had to make sure that switch was on correct place ( breaker or wire ). On shared neutrals most cheap tracers have problems. Some times if you turn sensor touching breaker by 45 degrees it will pick up the breaker better if you are receiving false reads. If you tracer has a row of lights does one breaker only illumantes the most lights. If that does not work plug in sending unit in the receptacle then turn breakers off 1 at a time. When it goes off that should be the circuit. Always check outlet to prove that power is definitely off. Had a receptacle in a large lobby that 3 seperate sparkies spent hours on trying to locate circuit breaker. We checked over 700 circuit breakers from basement up to 2nd floor and never located it. Good luck.
