  • A brief introduction to Elgar'nan; the elven god of vengeance in Dragon Age.
Elgar'nan is one of my favourite of the elven deities, and I'm super excited to see where the series takes him!
I'll be covering all of the gods, it just so happened that Ghilan'nain and Elgar'nan were my first two, which is just hilarious because I considered them to be the most basic but interesting XD

I've been waiting since 2009 to find out about who this guy was. Always fascinated and intrigued me. So yay!

I’m so glad you mentioned Elgar’nan’s motive for his violence, specifically the protection of his mother in his origin. It seems to get glossed over by people on first glance, but it’s one of the reasons I actually want to meet this evanuris. And see him and Mythal interact. There’s more than just some thuggish hothead going on there.
And I really want to find out how he could go from the elgar’nan in those stories to a man who murdered his wife for power.

let's have in mind that all the Evanuris are officially blighted now, I'm not sure if we could "reason" with Elgar'nan more than we could with Corypheus

It is interesting to me that Elgar'nan is only known from either the creation story or from some vengeful act. There is no lore on his actual domain.
Vengeance isn't something you can claim as an aspect that is.. useful in daily life. He even shares most of this aspect with Mythal, although her representation is more on the side of justice as long as you don't upset her.
The other Evanuris are hinted at being smiths, sculpters, researchers architects, guardians, protectors of knowledge, of secrets, of death. But Elgar'nan is only mentioned when upset with someone and smiting them or being stopped from smiting them by Mythal.
Makes me wonder if his true domain is forgotten, or obscure or not one simple concept. What if he was the initial king of his people and the others his generals. That he inherited his title while the others climbed the ranks and that is why we hear of an odd creation myth but no great accomplishments.
Sylaise would have been the architect of his cities, June the lyriumworker/enchanter/smith, Dirthamen the spymaster, Falon'din the spiritual guide (priest) of those in uthenera or dying, Andruil the master huntsman who made sure bad monsters didn't eat all their people, and Mythal his wife and judical force of his kingdom.
Solas a later addition as head of the guard/police force (judging from the guarding and howling wolf statues)
And Ghilan'nain a researcher who perhaps stumbled on something they wanted but they needed her to do it so they raised her to godhood..
Aaargh, I need more lore in DAV! It is sometimes like things almost make sense and then one piece doesn't fit xD

So from what i gather solas about to have a real bad time with elgar'nan in dav. Im sure the god of vengence will be invitive for punishing the one who locked him away for a few millennium.
Though i do wonder given from what we know he did seem to love/repect mythal. I wonder why he turned on her?

I love this!! An elven thought I'd had is that "nan" and "nain" might be masc/femme for "overthrew." I fully agree on your interpretation of Elgar as either "spirit" or "trap," and that's really interesting to me with a "nan" that means "overthrew." If Elgar means "sun," that'd be "overthrew the sun." If it means "spirit," then "overthrew spirit" - or even the deities that came before? And if it means "trap," well, there's plot implications for that! I think it fits for Ghilan'nain, also, because "Ghil" means "guide," and "ghilana" is part of "guide me" - so it could mean "she who overthrew guidance," or more colloquially, "she who broke the rules." Which I love for her!

Firstly, we only *know* of 8/9 elvan gods. There could have been others (and no, I don't mean the forgotten ones). Just gods whose stories were lost with the suppression of elvan culture. The ones we know about are the ones with the most stories and the most accessible temples.
If 'nan and 'nain were to have a similar meaning, I'd suggest it was champion of or something like that. Because Ghila'nain wasn't originally a god, she achieved godhood later, kind of like Hercules to pick a human pantheon. She seems to have been sponsored by Andriul And I was just reading about Elger'nan last night, and it almost seems as if he was sponsored by his mother, the land.
Aside from that, I question the idea that the elvan gods are all just evil. What if the issue isn't them? What if the issue is the blight? It seems the world was fine until the Sun grew jealous and was cast down into the Earth by Elger'nan. So did the Sun become infected? And infect the "Earth" in turn?
There was talk of Andruil making armor of the Void and going out to hunt enemies until Mythal made her lose her way to the gates of where these enemies dwelt. Perhaps these enemies are the true problem, reaching through portals and gates to infect Thedas, taking flaws and amplifying them to dangerous degrees.
I mean, it's a bit of a joke that Bioware's enemies are always twisted versions of the people who already exist (see Mass Effect for alternate examples), but perhaps they're going to get into more psychological stuff rather than just body horror. The Elvan gods were good, and then became evil and corrupt. The Tevinter gods were good. And then became evil and corrupt. Corrupt things get locked in the "earth" beneath the Deep Roads. Perhaps the Dwarvan Taigs were meant as guard posts to keep them there, and the dwarves voluntarily lost their connection to the fade to act as guardians, Grey Wardens before there were Grey Wardens. But they missed something (Ghil'nain's monster factories left behind when her corrupted self was banished by fen harel, and something reactivated them (the Tevinter priest magisters?)) and so the blights began.
It could work. It also has potential to lead to many stories with many villains, as in the end, we don't know what the first touch of corruption was. Finding that prime cause can be the task of many games. Defeating it, many more.

I said it on another video of yours, but i truly wonder what other aspect Elgar'nan could have embodied. Spirits before the Veil couldn't be seperated as good/bad as easily as the Chantry wanted it to be, but it's clear that at least some gods represented two aspect of a spirit (Mythal being Justice AND Vengeance, Solas possibly being Wisdom AND Pride) which makes me wonder what Elgar'nan might be. we know he embodies one aspect of Vengeance, but what's the other side of that coin?
On another question, he's also one of a handful of Evanuris who embodies a spirit aspect. Beside Mythal, Solas and him, the others are not God of Faith/Compassion/Valor etc, but Goddes of the Hunt, Keeper of Secrets. It makes me wonder if instead of all Evanuris being spirits, only a handful actually were. And that Mythal DID gave birth (the "human" way) to the others like the legends say, hence them not embodying spirit aspects and virtue but rather.. functions.
I don't know of those theories are very clearly explained but I hope they make somewhat sense-

Mythal was considered to be an impartial goddess who wisely judged her petitioners, while Elgar’nan was full of fury. I think previously they represented the dichotomy of Justice and Vengeance, but Mythal has been “corrupted” into vengeance over time (especially after bonding with Flemeth).

I just can't see Elgarnan as a protector of women since he helped to murder Mythal. Maybe he changed because of the blight (though, it appears that he chose to be blighted ... for power). Regardless, I can't view him as anything other than an abusive POS and I'm looking forward to demolishing him at the end of The Veilguard :-)
