We stayed in Genoa for 2 nights after flying into Milan on our way to Cinque Terre. We loved the city and would visit again. Very walkable. I tell everyone to visit.
Very cool, Carolyn. We have yet to visit Cinque Terre. It would have been too tight to fit into this trip and crowds at this time of year might not have been ideal. We want to get there someday soon! Great job spreading the word about this fascinating city! Thanks so much for watching! -Judy
Thanks for this lovely sharing ! Genova is my favourite city in Italy... the most stunning cemetery in Europe (Staglieno), the second fortress wall after the Great Wall of China that you can reach by funicular, and from where you have overviews on the city and the countryside, a lovely park with waterfall of the museo Chiossone (japanese collections) in the city center, and so many hidden marvels...
Thank you so much for watching, Florian! We loved Genova as well! Have you seen the rest of our video series from Italy? I'll link it below. Thanks for showing Genoa! It looks like a wonderful base city for 30-60 days. Please consider more vlogs about comfortable base cities for slow travelers. We enjoy your insights and information!
Thanks for watching, Gregg! What you're suggesting would probably be a good compilation video, and we probably could even do a series of them as we continue to explore more. Thanks for the terrific suggestion. We think Cyprus (Paphos), Palermo, and Serbia (Belgrade-where we are currently) all are pretty affordable places for slow travel as well as Genoa. Egypt was inexpensive and we could have stayed longer there as well. Cairo was a little harder than Luxor, but both are doable. It's a little more effort than Europe, though.
Is Genova on my bucket list ? It is now !! As slways, thanks for all the great information, much appreciated. It's always a bit tricky to get a sense of what places to visit when you are far away, so the presentation was really helpful - I particularly liked the view from the train, so I even know that's how I want to get there. Happy trails And greetings from Australia. 💕
Thank you for watching, Alison. So glad we could put Genoa on your travel list. We appreciate your kind words, which mean so much to us. And we love Australia. We've only been to Sydney, but we would love to explore more. Melbourne for sure is on our list. Anywhere else that you would recommend-note that I am not in love with the idea of huge bugs the size of my palm! Not sure if you've seen our entire Italian playlist, but here's a link. Next week's episode on Torino/Turin will be very special, but we also really loved Verona, which is showcased in our 6 Cities in 12 Days episode (not that we'd recommend that pace generally speaking!) -Judy Italy videos: th-cam.com/play/PLNT98lWfwdF1Tj_VCjUNQTJBMtKpkz5Sk.html

Another fun fact! Genova is the home town of one of the world’s greatest living architects: Renzo Piano. He has built much in the city, including the San Giorgio Bridge that replaced the one that tragically collapsed in 2018. Genova looks wonderful - thank you for the peek!!
Thank you so much for watching! And you are right. I am horrible with remembering these small details, but I do remember our guide mentioning Renzo Piano. Thanks for giving him recognition! -Judy

Thanks to you, Genoa is on my bucket list now. Genoa doesn't seem as expensive as other major Italian cities. I am already looking at airbnb rooms in Genoa.
Yes, I think because it's not overtouristed and also because the cost of living is lower in Genoa, it was more affordable. Thanks for this first traveller video on TH-cam that's great! What I really like is you also show "real" places and details - and even mention the special (and really clever) house number system ;) I love Genova. So much, two years ago I decided to make Genova's centro storico my new home. Next time, you are close, let me know - I've loads more hidden treasures for you to show the world ;) ❤ Martin
Thank you so much for watching, Martin! We absolutely loved Genoa and are so grateful to our view that suggested we must visit! How wonderful for you to be living there now, especially in Centro storico. We will reach out when we visit again and would love to know about the hidden places. That's one of the drawbacks that we encounter while traveling. Someone has to share those places in order for the greater world to know about them, but locals don't want tourists to know about them and then spoil them. We get it, but it's often why we share about the touristy things versus a city's secret places! -Judy
Oh WOW, Erin, how exciting! We are THRILLED for you! What is your first destination and how long will you be there? If you have any questions at all, please let us know. 👏👏👏👏 -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie we’re headed to Mexico and then South America. We board a cruise in Argentina to Portugal in April 2024 for 27 days. We’re planning on staying in Europe for a few months. We’re very excited to finally get started.
Wow. This all sounds spectacular. We have Argentina in our plans for 2024, and we'd love to return to Portugal, so you will have to tell us about all the amazing places you think we should visit! If you don't have a favorite Schengen calculator yet, this is a link to the one we like. www.visa-calculator.com We had a run-in with an agent in Vienna that was a little unnerving, so we recommend keeping your dates of arrival and departure handy and know for sure when you need to be out of Schengen. We were at 88 days (we try not to stay the full 90 in case of flight cancellations), but the agent seemed sure we overstayed. It helped that we had itineraries handy! -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie thank you. Good info. Check out a repositioning cruise from Europe to Argentina. A relaxing way to travel (I hope). We’re going the opposite direction!

Thank you so much for watching and for this very kind compliment! Are you a fellow full-time traveler, or just a lucky person who takes long breaks from a home base? Genova is wonderful. But I'll warn you that our episode that airs this Saturday from Turin will make it a toss-up! Perhaps two weeks in each city? Still not enough time in each! Stay tuned and let us know what you think. 😉 -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie Yes, in 2015 my husband and I did what you’re doing and traveled 17 months. Then we became grandparents and now we have a home base and take longer trips. @@merrillmixer1190 Sounds absolutely incredible! None of our children are quite ready to be parents yet, so we will hopefully get a bit more time. Congratulations on being grandparents! How wonderful your trips to Poland and Albania sound. We had intended to visit Albania this month as well, but our plans ended up shifting. And sheesh, thanks to the ridiculously slow and overbearing issues in New York State, we still are waiting on one final document from my grandmother (which should take a whopping 10 months to receive) and then we need to go over any inconsistencies, get things translated and apostilled, and only then submitted to the court in Italy for a trial. It's painfully slow (18 months already). We're trying to be patient. Thanks for asking! -Judy

@lyndafayesmusic Hi Lynda, Genova is the Italian name for Genoa. It's the exact same city. It's part of the Italian Riveria, almost directly south of Milan on the coastline. This is not to be confused with Geneva, Switzerland, which is entirely different! Thanks for watching! -Judy

@@FindingGinaMarie That city never considered itself a tourist resort, but more a port, a place of trade. It is not in the spirit of the population. They see tourism as something you have to put up with. It is not considered so essential. In recent years, with the arrival of the world crisis, maybe they realised they had to focus more on that.
@@giorgiodifrancesco4590That sounds about right. And although trade is different from tourism, there's a lot similar-people arrive with money to spend! We were impressed by how much of a melting pot Genova is, and I'm sure the trade had a lot to do with that. But there is so much beauty and culture and richness there, it's a shame it gets overlooked. But tourists can be a curse as well as a blessing, so the expression "be careful what you wish for" has some truth to it, especially as you consider all the overtouristed places to see in Italy. The family of my grandparents live in Masone, about 25 minutes away. I'm very familiar with the city, which I believe, is the most hidden gem of all the major cities in Italy. Thank you for sharing this. The interesting fact about Genova is the sections, Voltri, Pegli, Pra', Sestri, Cornigliano and the center and beyond each with their history, especially Pra' for basil. Great video. Have been to Genoa twice and plan another visit this fall; it is a very colorful, distinctive, richly historical, appetizing, untouristy city-a revelation for us, with much to see and many great places to eat. Wandering the vicoli in the Antico Porto is a lot of fun and not scary once you get accustomed to it (and do not carry a wallet). Off-season the Grand Savoia Hotel across from the train station is a great deal (we prefer hotels to AirBnBs).

Your travel vlog is my go-to when I need a virtual getaway. Your passion for discovery is evident in every frame. Oh, and before I forget, have you checked out the v4 Bento Bag from NomadLane? It might complement your travel style perfectly.
Wow, thank you SO much. That is such a kind and thoughtful comment for you to share with us. Thank you also for watching. It all really does mean a ton to us. I just took a look at this v4 Bento Bag. It actually looks great and checks off a ton of our boxes. Two problems for me specifically, though. While I do put my bag through the trolley handle, I only do it on flat, smooth surfaces to protect my wrists. Managing my rolling back on cobblestones still requires wrist strength, so when we're walking to train stations, etc., I'll typically wear my backpack. And so the second point is that it's better for my body (I can't speak for anyone else) to have a backpack and have weight distributed across my back versus being on one shoulder. I would LOVE it if this style could had straps that would allow it to be worn/converted to a backpack. But everything else here is great, especially the weight and dimensions (and that it comes in my favorite color, burgundy). Hopefully our viewers will read this and check it out. It may be perfect for them. ♥️ -Judy

Hi Aaron, We highly recommend Il Genovese and their pesto. It was the most flavorful we've ever eaten! And you could eat it all day every day in Genoa! Thanks for watching! We'll be back in Italy in a few months (and then again in the fall) and we are looking forward to it! -Judy

Yes, but GENOVA is in Italy. Genova is the Italian name for Genoa. We included both because people use the names interchangeably and we wanted them to find us whether they were searching for Genova or Genoa. Thanks for watching! -Judy
The real farinata is cooked in a wood-fired farinata oven and should be eaten at the table freshly baked hot. Excellent are those baked by the "Farinata dei teatri dal 1861" in Piazza Marsala, by the "Antiga sà pesta (crushed salt) in via dei Giustiniani as well as by the Antica Sciamadda in Via San Giorgio. The farinata sold in bakeries, cooked in the electric oven, they are things for tourists. Ditto for what concerns the fake Recco focaccia with cheese
Focaccia e Dintorni is a very small place among the viccoli. We also had some also in a wood-fired oven when we were in Nervi. Considering there are a lot of locals that go to this location, I don't think it's designed for tourists. We had both from the same place. Sorry if you disagree. We'd be happy to try these others you suggest as well the next time we visit. And the ones we ate still were hot, but we had more to explore. That's why what we ate on camera was almost nearly gone. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie Thanks a lot for the collaboration. I live about 4 km from Nervi (Quarto dei Mille, from where Giuseppe Garibaldi set sail with the Thousand on 5 May 1860) and, from memory, I can't remember where there might be a "sciamadda (flamed)" with a wood-burning oven . In La Spezia, the one offered by "La Pia centenaria" is excellent, as is the one by VINO E FARINATA in Savona, in Via Pia. Here they also offer white farinata, typical of Savona. Even the "panissa" sold in Savona is different from that sold in Genoa.
I didn't care for the spot in Nervi (Gusto Giusto) nearly as much as the place in Genoa viccoli. We've yet to visit La Spezia, but I will put these locations in my back pocket for when we do visit! Thanks for sharing them here. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie Bar Bakery and Focacceria Gusto Giusto Caffé S.r.l.s: is located inside the ekom supermarket in Genoa Nervi. I had been there months ago with my Peruvian caregiver after having wasted the whole morning at the Crédit Agricole. In fact they have edible focaccia, but I hadn't noticed any wood-fired oven. I'll be back. Thank you again for your availability and for your precious collaboration.
Yes, you are exactly right. But I was looking at the video from Gusto Giusto that we took, and it doesn't look like a wood fired oven after all. Still would be curious of what you think. We were a little disappointed in it, despite it being touted as artisanal. -Judy
Christopher Columbus wasn’t such a great guy. His bad behaviors were erased from the history books until recent years, so we didn’t think it was necessary to give him an additional spotlight. -Judy
I call it ZENA! It's dialect name. The name it was called when Christopher Columbus, knew it as. (before he went off to Spain and to find a new world and prove the earth is not flat)
Interesting; we've never heard that term for Genova. We learned something new! We have several videos from our time in Italy as full-time travelers, and we're visiting a few more cities this year. @@FindingGinaMarie Yes, exactly, but I not say about original name, The city's name is "Genova", there is no other way to call the city. It's interesting that the names of cities shouldn't be written or called differently because of language, it's not just a word but a name. It should be written and called according to its official form.
@@BoomTechnology Actually, I just did a search for it and "both words are taken from the Latin name of the city - Genua." Language is much more complicated than you may think it is. It evolves. It's an "exonym, which are particularly common in languages with different alphabets or writing systems, where transliteration or translation makes the local name difficult to pronounce or recognize for foreigners. The use of exonyms has decreased in modern times as there is a growing preference in international discourse to respect local languages and use endonyms. In the case of Italy, the English exonyms in the north often correspond to the local name rather than the standard (southern) Italian form. For example, Turin and Milan are the local Gallo-Romance forms that correspond to the standard (southern) Italian Torino and Milano. (The final vowel of masculine nouns tends to disappear in northern Italian Gallo-Romance as it does in French, unlike in southern Italian, Spanish, etc.) And the fact that these are also the French and Spanish exonyms surely helped to fix them in that form. Second, many place names in Italy are rather older than the Italian language, and the exonyms may derive from the older names. For example, Florence (where, again, English uses the French exonym) derives from the older Florentia rather than from modern Italian Firenze. Similarly, Naples was originally the Greek town of Neápolis, and the French Naples (whence the English Naples), like the Spanish Nápoles, comes from that name rather than from the modern Italian Napoli." As for us, we want our video to be seem by people who know the city as Genova but also Genoa, which is why we include both pronunciations. -Judy
@BoomTechnology You are welcome to your opinions but at least you now know the reasons behind the duality, whether you want to agree or not. The real point is that we hope you enjoyed our spotlight on this beautiful city. -Judy
We booked a tour with Antonio. Waited 2 hrs at the Piazza de Ferrari. Antonio Never Showed. Never going to watch or take your suggestions ever again. We're out of $52
Hi Joanne, Did he confirm your tour with him? We only used him once, but he was prompt and gave a great tour. I have his contact information and reached out to him through Airbnb tours and also through WhatsApp. We make no money by recommending the tour guides we use and I am terribly sorry to hear that things did not work out. Has he responded to you at all?
You should have recourse to get a refund through Airbnb Experiences by reaching out to their online support line, which typically has been responsive for when I've needed to reach out for an Airbnb. Of course, that doesn't make up for your lost time. I'm very curious to know what resolution you get. Hopefully I hear back from him, but if he doesn't have a good explanation, I certainly will no longer recommend him. -Judy
Thank God we had aquarium tickets and the day turned out great. I was tried calling him numerous of times directly and via WhatsApp. We eventually received a reimbursement. He emailed my daughter that he wasn't feeling well and had to cancel
@@joannekraft2836 I finally heard from Antonio as well and he mentioned that he had refunded you. I asked him what's up and whether he still is committed to his tour guide business; I'm still waiting to hear back, so maybe I have my answer. He was a great guide and people get sick, but it's never acceptable to leave customers waiting. The amount of time anyone has in a place is short and it really sucks when you lose a day of sightseeing. I'm glad to hear that you were able to resurrect the day, but I'm so sorry that he flaked. That was completely unacceptable behavior. -Judy

-Judy
Genova is amazing!! Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching, Taran! It sounds like you've traveled a good bit around Italy. Do you have recommendations for anyplace we haven't visited? -Judy

@FDBADSDQW-ze5nq We deliberately made no mention of Christopher Columbus in this video, despite this being his hometown. -Judy

Thank you so much for watching, Nicole. Genoa is a great city and we hope you love it! We preferred Turin a little bit more, but don't think you'd be disappointed with either one. -Judy

Wow! Beautiful city. As usual, great video. The brief glimpse of the cliffside pool area at 8:34 looked very cool, too.
Thanks so much, Lisa! Yes, the cliffside area was in Nervi, which was a beautiful little town. We only heard of the town thanks to a viewer. Getting down to the water looked tricky, and we didn't bring towels or anything. Plus it was SO HOT that day! -Judy
In Voltri you will have the most famous and best focaccia, my opinion, in Genova at Priano. La Superba!
Hi John, Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience of Genoa. We need to go back and explore more. Our viewers will also appreciate your insights! Is there a particular place in Voltri we should check out for that focaccia? Below is a link to the rest of our series from Italy.
Hi Jonathan, thanks for the recommendation and for sharing your experience in Genoa. We visited on the suggestion of one of our viewers, and we're so grateful that we went. It truly surprised us. I STILL fantasize about the granitas I enjoyed there. We've been in France for the last two weeks and their "granitas" have been nothing like Italy's. -Judy

What a great video! We are going to Milan, Florence (our favorite), Turin and Genoa this July! I am happy you really enjoyed your stay in this lesser visited and unique city!
How awesome! Yes, Genoa was really great. Have you visited Verona, which also is a little less touristy? It gets the day timers, but the nights are quiet. It's another of our favorite places. We cover it in our 6 cities in 12 days video when we thought we'd be moving to Italy, not traveling the world. Living in Italy is still part of our long-term plans, but not for many years. We are trying to see some of the smaller places to see what else might resonate with us. We hope you have an absolutely amazing trip and would love to hear about it when you return! -Judy

@@FindingGinaMarie Yes, Verona is wonderful, we have spent a week there on 3 separate occasions. We love the day trip opportunities from there: Trento, Desenzano del Garda, and Padua were our favorites. We have grown to love Northern Italy the most, my favorite is Bologna for the food, we did a whole Emilia Romana trip: Parma, Bologna, Modena. Thanks for all tips and tricks, happy travels!
Thanks for these additional recommendations. We'll add these additional locations to our list of smaller towns we want to visit. We'll be in Orvieto, Summonte, and Sardinia this year as well as a rapid tour with our daughter in about a month or so so she can see some of the places she's got on her travel list. -Judy
Thanks! It was helpful❤

Great video, you forgot to visit Boccadasse, an ancient sailors' village,
Thanks for watching, Claudio! Unfortunately, we only had a week to spend in Genoa, and that included a lot of time where we had to work. We definitely will add it to our list of places to visit for next time. Ideally we spend a month in a city, build some routines, get to know the city and then spend a little time exploring outside of the city. Thanks for this suggestion! -Judy
The closeness of buildings was also done to create shade. Keeps streets cooler.
You're right, of course, Jon. But having enough light really affects my mood, so I'd probably put up with the heat and the fading of furniture in order to have sunshine indoors. But I realize that it's fairly impractical. Thanks for watching and for your feedback. -Judy
Wow you guys are amazing!!! The expenses seem quite reasonable to me as I very recently visited Nice and it was quite expensive than Genova plus I did visit a village called Eze and it was breathtaking when I walked from the top of village Eze to the Eze railway station, but the village Nervi you guys visited seem to be wonderful one too, thanks for posting your incredible videos.
Hi Deepak, thank you so much for watching. We've heard a lot of recommendations for Eze and we have it on our list for the next time we are in France (I'll link our two videos from our time in the South of France). We did find that Nice and Cagnes sur Mer were much pricier than Genoa-and the food in Genoa was more plentiful! Have you seen our entire series from Italy? Really enjoyed your videos on Genoa and Turin ! We are booked on a Sun Princess Cruise February 28th through March 9 Rome to Athens and around to Barcelona, but the cruise is oversold. And if they turn us away since we have booked a guaranteed room which is deceptive. If they deny us passage because they've oversold, we plan to take the train to Genoa.Turin and Milan .then fly to Barcelona and continue our planed trip. Your vidio was our inspiration THANKS 😊
Thanks so much for this note of encouragement to us and for watching our videos! Wow! I had thought Genoa was not nearly as interesting a place as it turns out it was. Very, very cool! We may have to visit it. it would be a good stopping point between Cinque Terre and other northern parts of Italy. Van Gogh!!!! :-)
Right, Rebecca?! Genoa is only an hour away by train from Cinque Terre, so it's very doable to add it to your itinerary if you have any extra time. And yes, it was such a dream exhibit. I had to pinch myself that it was up while we were there! Thank you so much for taking the time to watch! -Judy

Genoa is the first city I visited outside my home country Bangladesh. It was in 2010. Again i visited the city in 2011. I really loved the place, especially Pegi area. I think this beautiful city is overshadowed by other Italian cities like Rome or Venice.
Thank you so much for watching! We really enjoyed Genoa and are grateful to one particular viewer who made an especially compelling comment about why we needed to visit both Genoa and Turin. Detouring to them was one of our best travel decisions (except for mosquitos!). We agree completely about it being overshadowed. BUT that meant we didn't have to fight nearly the crowds or pay unreasonable prices for things, so that's a win for those of us who do make the time to explore it! -Judy

♥️ -Judy

-Judy

-Judy
You should mention Genova is where Christopher Columbus grew up.

Similarly, Naples was originally the Greek town of Neápolis, and the French Naples (whence the English Naples), like the Spanish Nápoles, comes from that name rather than from the modern Italian Napoli."
As for us, we want our video to be seem by people who know the city as Genova but also Genoa, which is why we include both pronunciations. -Judy
@@FindingGinaMarie simple is Genova 🤣
@BoomTechnology You are welcome to your opinions but at least you now know the reasons behind the duality, whether you want to agree or not. The real point is that we hope you enjoyed our spotlight on this beautiful city. -Judy
