  • Jan shows you how to make a beef casserole from scratch. Another very tasty meal, so little effort. We topped ours with mash, delicious. Another of Al's favourites!!!

    Hey guys, just wanted to thank you for your video, without this I'd still be eating chips and processed chicken burgers. I'm on a budget right now and can't really afford to make mistakes experimenting with cooking so video's like this really help people like me out. Just to let you know I put the lid on and used a glass pyrex casserole dish and it took 2 hours at 200c but no dried out food I also used carrots, turnip, swede, garlic and parsnip with some Worcestershire sauce best god dam meal I've ever had. Oh just to add I used to do stews using a pressure cooker after watching someone else do it on-line and I have to say cooking it in a halogen takes much longer but taste wise is so much better.

      dereton33 Hi Jack, gonna give your tips to use the pyrex dish a go, I guessing the heat transfers better through the glass? Can you tell me did you stand it on the low rack or straight onto the glass bowl? Thanks Jan

      dereton33 Hi Jan. I'm not sure whether glass is better than the others I was just using as I got for £4.50 out of tesco's, also it has a flat lid so no knob on the top of lid getting in way of heating element, if you need a link to it just let me know and I'll put it here, I used it on the low rack without using the extender ring, I am also using the JML halogen but I doubt that would make any difference as I would imagine all brands do the same job.

      Hi Jack, Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes I see what you mean about no nob on the lid, I do have a well worn dish that I could use however I think a new one wouldn't go amiss as the one I have is now 40 years old!! Yes please forward the link if you've time. Again, thanks, Jan

      Hi jan, I did a bit of research on the net about glass cookware and apparently they are good for casseroles but maybe not good for recipes containing a lot of sugar you can read it here www.thekitchn.com/metal-glass-ceramic-or-silicon-pans-when-to-use-each-169507 and here is the casserole dish link www.tesco.com/direct/pyrex-15l-casserole-with-lid/307-6160.prd?skuId=307-6160 you can also get different size ones in wilkinsons and argos, the one i linked you fits in my halogen not sure about the other sized ones you can get.

    Ace. I use my halogen exclusively, as I have no 'conventional'cooker where I live. Ive mostly used it for cooking chicken pieces, frozen food and such, but wanted to try my hand at a topped casserole or shepherd's pie. Your vid was a great help, thanks very much for sharing. Baz

I just purchased a Halogen over the weekend and have just heated up in there at the moment. but as I'm recently descovered to have IBS am gluten and lactose intolerant it is more important that I learn to cook again. cooking has to be easy for me to follow. thanks. Thanks for all your cooking tips, love the demonstrations, what a lovely couple. When you were cooking the casserole in the dish inside the oven, was there a reason you didn't put the lid on the casserole dish? I always put a lid on mine when I cook it in a conventional oven to keep the moisture in.

    • @dereton33
      @dereton33  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Jervis Hi Tom , thank you for your lovely comments! Yes I left the lid off as I found it takes a lot longer to cook if the lid is on, however you are correct that it does dry out and the top especially can get dry. I try to keep stirring so this doesn't happen but I have since found that by covering with tin foil it can go some way to solving both problems as it keeps the moisture in and is not as thick as the lid and so doesn't slow cooking times down as much. Hope this this helps, I find that I am still experimenting with cooking times with the Halogen against the conventional oven, but the results are amazing and of course the cost is so much cheaper so worth the extra effort i think. Jan
