The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I was born in 66. I watched her appear on Merv Griffin many times and he would bring up the fact that she was ranked the number one flamenco guitarist in the world. She talked about playing the guitar when she was heavily pregnant by laying it flat on her lap.

@@mrs.rucker2448 -- I guess part of the problem for me is I didn't watch Merv Griffin. @@Shianne264 -- You would've been old enough to know what was going on while she was still being celebrated for her skills on the guitar. I was born just late enough that she was already in her sequin outfit phase by the time I was allowed to stay up later to watch sitcoms and talk shows, and was paying attention to details about TV show guests.
I had completely the wrong impression of her when I was a little girl, and thought she was more like Goldie Hawn on Laugh In. Even though she was given recognition for her talent as a flamenco guitarist earlier in her career, I'm really upset that was not still the main focus of sitcom guest appearances and talk show interviews with her later on.
I'm even more upset with my parents' generation, who should have been concerned enough about feminism to also be upset with the way she was being portrayed.

No, there’s actually a whole birth year controversy. She gave a later DOB, but there’s been a lot of evidence she was born in 1941 (according to her naturalization papers) but she changed it to 1947, then 1949 and then eventually it landed to 1951. So…she would’ve been more 24 here…which looks to be about right. This is no 14 year old. She even clearly had rhinoplasty done at this point.
Also if you listen to what she says about her life, she said she was still at school in a convent when she was 15 and graduated at 16…but her career had already started by then according to the 1951 birthday.
It’s hard being in the industry, especially back then, for women. Age matters so much.

According to Wikipedia, she was born in 1951, which would make her 14 years old in 1965. That seems almost impossible that she is only 14 years old here. Hell even at 18 that would be nuts.

Born in 1950, I knew both sides of Charo. My Dad played classical guitar, and he & Mom loved Charo's guitar skills and her hilarious sense of humor. She married much older Xavier Cugat because he wanted to advance her career. He was a joy, himself. Charo's comedy is a wonderful part of her, but I knew both Charos. A glorious woman of widely varied talents. ❤

When my wife and I were just married we went to NYC for our honeymoon in 1965.
We went to a show at the old Latin Quarter near Times Square. A big time Night Club.
I tipped the Maitre D ,that’s what they did in the movies, and we got a table next to the stage.
Xavier Cougart was the headliner and he introduced this 16 year Spanish Girl who played the guitar.
She was younger than my 18 year old bride as we were a couple of kids
The drinking age in NY was 18
She spoke zero English. She was breathtakingly beautiful but not a beautiful as my bride and the old guy looked at her a number of times and repeated but she is so Young
He was 65 but they married later
She was incredibly talented . I think that was her first appearance in the US.

Paris Hilton probably used PR people that promoted her to fame. They create buzz around someone every once in a while and it just works. You get PR employees to post a bunch of gushing comments around pictures of a nobody and people don't question it. People just assume and watch for the person rather than try to find out at that moment how this career hatched out of thin air. It also helps promotes whatever they're appearing in vicariously. I've noticed it mostly used on female unknowns.

I'm happy she is still alive in 2025 to get the credit as a great musician, that she deserves. I can only assume she was just considered a blonde novelty act back in the misogynistic '60's. I know she has said she laughed her way to the bank back then, as people in the US thought she was just a clown, but it had to hurt. Bravo, Charo. The power base of the current music industry needs to start their appreciation tour for her, as they have for other under-rated artists.
