Maybe not highly educated with how things really go. Idk but attempting to put myself in their shoes. We don't know the individual but there could be a # of factors that made them decide to do that. Ugh, nobody has all the answers, we can definitely try & understand where the disconnect lies. Glad their going to have some training, obviously it's time for a discussion within the establishment. They're not the only ones, others should follow suit.

Even if it was done intentionally, it was the waiter's fault not the restaurant's. They definitely have a case of defamation. KPRC has the worst reporters, I swear.

This is really common. A lot of people say gringos for white people, negros for black people, and Chicanos for people like me of Mexican heritage. Negro definitely has a horrible connotation and really horrible history since it’s inception during slavery, Jim Crow days, etc. Usually when people say either gringo, negro, or Chicano, they’re just using it as an adjective like how you’d say oh it was a nice Hondureña lady or Salvadorean lady, or even most people say it was a Chinita, but yes those are outdated terms and China/o literally translated to Chinese and not every Asian person is from China! I have no doubt it was written on the receipt with no malice, but understand how hurtful it was for them. Being called the bad n word is not fun and definitely could feel discriminatory. These names should be forgotten.

You're absolutely right. I have a friend and all my other friends call him "chino" even though he's really Korean, but its not out of disrespect, but instead affection. Latin America is a very racially diverse region (arguably more than the US if you go to Brazil), so the residents there view discrimination more through culture rather than race. The Spanish and Portuguese word for Black is Negro. So, he used it as what it was, didn't mean to be disparaging towards anybody.
In spanish black is negro, I was born in México and The only word that we know for African Americans is Negros, and we never seen it as a racial or discriminatory thing, thats how we call them.

But we're in America, not Latin America and black Americans fought to not be called that. Even more, moreno is the right term, not negro, but none of it is really acceptable for a customer.
@@sparklesp9304 It's culturally different across the board. Moreno is used in certain countries but other countries use negro. A good example is Argentina. Also parts of Central America use negro instead of moreno. Not everyone that is a Spanish speaker here is from Mexico. There's 15 different Spanish speaking countries across North and South America alone. Not one of these countries does things the same. Proper language is dependent on who you ask.

This story is absolutely ridiculous. The fact that the reporter made no attempt to explain the context makes this look like something it isn't.
Spanish speakers use terms like negro or moreno and chino and gringo, etc all the time with no ill intent. And it's completely accepted in all circles because they are simple identifiers, just as mild as referring to some one as "the blonde guy" or "the short lady" in English.
That has nothing to do with this situation! At restaurants, orders are labeled by table #, area, or waiter, not the Color of the customer! They did that so the cooks could know who ordered that food. The ONLY reason why the cook needs to know who ordered the food is so they can play over your food!

@@browncatwithblurredbackgro2461 There's absolutely nothing wrong with asking for separate checks unless you ask for them at the end of your visit and/or you want it split in an overly complicated way or 1 check for each person at a table of 8+. Most people that do that want you to take too long so that they can complain. Some people try any type of crap to make it difficult on a server, so that they can complain and get a discount. Not everyone that does this, does it for a discount but it happens enough that if you're a sever, you automatically suspect something when someone does that. Either that or in some cases, at restaurants, they will ask for you to split a check and while you're distracted they run out on their bill. Point is anyone who doesn't ask ahead of time for a split check unfortunately, is suspicious, because of quite a few other crappy people. When you're in the industry of taking care of people you find out how much they will try to get away with. You get to see some people at their worst. The others are saying lemons bc some people will ask for a crap ton of lemons and use every one to avoid paying for a lemonade. The servers have to cut those lemons and are responsible for any extreme loss of any products including lemons. Some people are absolute jerks about getting their way regardless of how it effects the server, the servers other tables, or the restaurant. Also the bill is paid at the end bc the sever is tipped at the end with the bill. Almost everyone uses plastic to pay and like everywhere else there is no system to take money from your card on an independent charge, except for an ATM. Fast food restaurants don't do tipping. Most fast food employees get paid minimum wage. Servers get paid $2.15 an hour. If you raise the wage for a server, your bill at a casual restaurant would be way more expensive because of employment tax laws and state tax laws. So that hamburger that you get for lunch at Chili's just went from being $10 to being about $18. We can change it but it will effect everyone that goes to these restaurants, even the ones that weren't the problem to begin with.

@@danaf4666 I'm willing to bet that the employee that did that didn't have proper paperwork. There are a lot of people that are working in the restaurant industry that have manufactured paperwork. I have personally seen it. I can name about 50+ restaurants in the Houston area that don't look at their employees paperwork too hard. Most just work on a actual ssn with a different name on it and don't file taxes so that they don't raise red flags. You are naive to think that a big city like this doesn't have illegal people hiding amongst the huge population. Even more so to think that all employers are hiring legal people and paying the amount required by law and more so to think that an employer that hires illegal immigrants is going to train them on United States educates.

It wasn't done with ill intent. That means black in Spanish and it was an easy way to keep track of the 10 different checks at cash out. The news and several of the people complaining weren't even there they just get people worked up. I would bet that if you actually meet the waiter and talked to them they probably aren't a bad person. And likely feel terrible and afraid of loosing their job they just got after walking from south America
