The RWD Options | Explorer vs Durango

  • Once upon a time RWD body on frame SUVs roamed the land and started to attract active families that might have opted for station wagons or minivans before. Over the years most of these family haulers morphed into crossovers which blend SUV looks with minivan motivation, but for 2021 there are two options that are different from the rest. The Durango and Explorer are the only non-luxury RWD three-row vehicles that start under $35,000...

My mom bought the 2020 Ford Explorer XLT, she was deciding between the Ford and the Durango. She loved both, but the ford won out; and the whole family loves it. She praises the driving dynamics, there's enough space for five people. Me and my brothers are each over 6 ft tall. It's comfortable for long trips. And I think it looks absolutely beautiful. Videos and Pictures don't do it justice. To me it's gorgeous , not an European suv gorgeous, but American gorgeous. I can't put it into words well, but there's just something very handsome about it.

My choice is very simple, I'm a Ford owner, and I love my SHO (2012), but as far as these two are concerned, the Durango from the year 2020 has been a winner for me, I'll go for the Durango without thinking twice.

The Durango is on the WK2 platform, which is a refreshed WK platform which was a modified M class platform. The Durango at its heart is among the sequoia and 4runner for age. Whats even weirder is that the Durango that was actually out in the 2000's was based on a different architecture entirely and at the time was modern. The Durango has a crazy history for only being 21 years old overall

I think it should be mentioned that ford still recommends premium fuel for the ecoboost (turbo charged) engine line while the naturally aspirated dodge products don't. Some will mention that regular gas works in the ecoboost vehicles, but I remember the fuel economy taking a serious nose dive when I did so. I wish AoA would note recommended fuel grades when doing the MPG segment. Around here, the price difference is about 30 cents between regular and premium, so adds 5 bucks to a full tank.

Alex, if you go for a pickup go for the RAM. I have one of those too. I’ve had all three domestic makes. Ford and GM have both been having serious problems with their ten speed transmission. I’m a landlord with a few buildings and keep a pickup for work. The RAM is by far the most truck like though the smoothest and I’ve found the most reliable and according to most recent repair records it’s substantiated as such. The optional in the side fender toolboxes are invaluable and the side view of the rear fenders from the side view mirrors makes you feel great. It also looks like a Kenworth which is cool.

    • @kenoday7562

I’ve had my 3.6 liter Pentastar Durango STX as my everyday car since 2012 and haven’t had a problem yet despite all of the badmouthing in the press about it. I thought that I was going to need a new ac blower once when it was whining but it only needed a cabin filter. I haven’t even replaced a lightbulb, just brake pads, two batteries and tires in 75,000 miles. I had an Aviator last year as a luxury vehicle but had problems with the transmission and infotainment system so I now have an XT5 for going out with friends and on long trips. The Magnaride is incredible. Next year my XT5 will be replaced by a Lyric. At that point I’ll probably sell my Durango because my RAM is a Longhorn and though it’s been really good to me at this point I’ve been using it very little. It depends on whether or not I have relatives visiting again after all of the events of this year are over. Living in Florida you always have company.

The Durango has kept up with NEWLY designed cars very well. Same as the Chrysler 200. Has all the tech of midsize cars today except making the safety standard , and a heads up display. Most still don’t have AWD or real wood trim like the 200. FCA seems to do a great job making timeless cars.

@@youtubecarspottersguide1 Actually it doesn't. The GCVW defines what the vehicle is capable of towing and carrying together. The vehicle's payload is lessened by the tongue weight of the trailer and then you figure in the fluids, people, pets, etc. If what you packed in the car weighs more than what your vehicles suspension can handle, you can offload some to the trailer, as long as you don't go over the GCVW.

Dodge should make you sell Durango. Whatever car you compare it with, Durango is the winner...

The Explorer and Durango are both SUVs not crossovers. Crossovers are cars pretending to be SUVs!

It was actually extremely relevant to what he was talking about if you would have actually listened. He said that the Highlander is much smaller than both the Explorer and Durango but the Highlander still has much more interior space and cargo room compared. He then went on to mention that he understands the Highlander and Durango are very different being that the Highlander is more related to the Sienna while the Durango is more related to RAM trucks. Maybe don’t be so ignorant next time...

so...after watching the review and comparison...i never got THE reason you would stay with the oldest, heaviest, worst MPG, and less drivable vehicle.
    did I miss the reason?????

The Durango tows over 2,000+ more pounds than the Explorer. He owns an Airstream trailer. Not that hard of a decision.

@@jacobjared so his deciding over these two cars, after listing everything good n bad....was towing?
      one need made the choice?

@@jacobjared Which he would NEVER tow with a 3.6, unless he liked waiting a week to hit 70 mph. The Durango would still be scary going down a long mountain road with a trailer that outweighs it by a ton. At some point, you need to take into consideration how much bigger your trailer is than your tow vehicle. If Fiat told you you could tow 5000 lbs with a 500, would you do it?
