    We got a 2014 Limited w/V6 and the premium package a couple months ago, and we really love it. It looks very sharp with the 20" rims and the Deep Cherry color. It handles very well for a large car, and I love the small turning radius. It drives smaller than it is, if that makes sense. The 8-speed is a real game-changer as compared to the 5-speed Durango we rented on vacation a while back. UCONNECT 8.4 is superb, too. Great job, Dodge!

    Hi Alex,
    Your presentation was very informative.
    I personally don’t like people who wear sunglasses while talking to me or during a presentation like this.
    Other than that, I give you 100%

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well if it helps they aren't sunglasses per se, they are corrective vision transition lenses, so while they are tinted when I'm in sunlight they aren't as dark as they appear in the videos. If I don't have them on I can't see anything and end up squinting all over the place.

    I'm sure that the increasingly rare body on frame construction reduces interior volume. But back in the late 50's they figured out how to make the frame bend around the passenger area to make room for foot wells in the floor pan. So there would be a wider sill area, but not really a loss of vertical room. But then if a truck frame is used like on big trad SUV's, no curvey frame so like Alex said, loss in vertical room or taller vehicle.
    Note that no one will care about: I always wondered how body on frame Imperials from 1957 to 1965 managed to have rear footwells with a straight frame. Turns out they reduced the height of the frame rails by about half in the rear seat area to make room for the wells. Amazing cars all around.

    Alex, I'm so glad to have found your car reviews. I am in the market for a 3rd row crossover and am tormented over these three cars: Toyota Highlander, Dodge Durango and Ford Flex. I test drove all three yesterday (in Silicon Valley). I have never owned an American made car and was very impressed by the quality of the Highlander, but I hate having a car that is boring to drive, or one that everyone has. That said, I'm very worried about the Durango's or Flex's reliability long term as we keep our cars for more than 10 years. HELP!

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      While the long term reliability of the Ford or Dodge may fall below Toyota, it is not as low as you may think. Only an average of 0.4 to 0.5 problems per car separate Ford and Toyota in the statistics which is essentially a wash. While there was a time where there was a big difference in reliability, that has narrowed significantly over the last 20 years.The Durango may be a hair below the Ford, but I would still keep it on your list as it is probably the most fun to drive.

    • @michellelk8204
      @michellelk8204 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex on Autos Thank you for the quick reply. To complicate matters, I also test drove a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe today. Very impressed with all of the available features and ease of use. Not a bad drive either, but the exterior isn't as exciting or unique as a Durango or Flex.

    • @LoganHankins
      @LoganHankins 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kevin-Michelle Kelly If you havent purchased a vehicle yet, be careful about that Santa Fe. I almost bought one until I read about how they wander into other lanes at highway speeds. Test drive one at 70mph and you will see what I mean.
      Grabbing a barely used Ford Flex offers a massive value for the luxuries you receive. Good hunting.

    • @michellelk8204
      @michellelk8204 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Logan Hankins We test drove a Santa Fe for a third time and couldn't help but notice how the back of the car rattled and shook--just like many reviews had noted. I simply couldn't pay close to $40k for the car. We did buy a new 2014 Flex, but that has not been without flaws. Lots of finish issues, which make me concerned about the overall quality of the car. The ride quality isn't great for passengers, but overall we are happy with the vehicle.

    Trying to decide on a midsize SUV as I move from a minivan. Thinking about a Durango or a Ford Explorer--Any recommendations?? I didn't see a review of the Explorer. THANK YOU for the most amazing, articulate and informative reviews. I am not a car person and yours are so articulate and thorough (and make sense to all viewers!). You are an excellent conveyor of a huge amount of information.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The last time I had an Explorer was before I started the channel in earnest so I don't have a video on it. The Explorer is very much a conventional crossover like the Highlander, Pathfinder, etc. It has a large 3rd row and is a solid entry. The Durango is quite different in that it is a RWD crossover with a high tow rating that is 50% higher than any other crossover. If you don't need to tow this is a non issue.
      What I would recommend is to take your whole family with you, jam them all in the car and spend as much time in the cabin as possible. Then decide which one fits you the best. One car may be "better" than another for a wide variety of reasons, but if it doesn't "fit" you and your family, then it doesn't really matter.

    The Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia and Chevy Traverse has the best in class legroom in all rows. So if space is what you are looking for take a look at any of those three vehicles.

    • @brianshawsr
      @brianshawsr 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are all front wheel drive vehicles which don't drive as well and have half the tow rating. The Honda Odyssey is by far more practical then the Pilot. It has more room, faster, handles better & gets better fuel mileage..

    The RWD Dodge Durango is the spiritual successor to the 1974-1977 Dodge Royal Monaco Brougham Station Wagon. It also had 3 rows of seats, a 400ci version of the same engine in this vehicle. It weighed about the same( (between 4500 and 5500 lbs), it was a unit body vehicle, it could be had with a heavy duty tow capacity package, the gas mileage was not very different. and the heavy duty vinyl on the seat was similar to the leather on the Durango,

    • @wiibaron
      @wiibaron 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      emjayay Our family had a Plymouth Custom Suburban station wagon from that era. Brown with the wood panel sides. Leather seats in a beige color with the carpeted door panels. I still remember that beast as I was 15 then and was dreading the thought of learning to drive in it. Then my mom got a 78 Monaco 2 door which was seemingly way smaller and still had a 360 for power. The mid 70s were a cool era for cars before the Omnis and Citations took over...

    Excellent review and entertaining to watch. I had no idea that Dodge/Chrysler products are so comparable to Ford and GM. Thanks for the background information. I have really enjoyed your work this past year or so.
    Careful about driving like a local on those mountain roads, 38 mph in a 25 mph zone, you are going to get nabbed :)

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fear not, the speedlimit on that road is 40 MPH so 38 was fine. The sign was for a school zone but unlike other states in CA the rule isn't "reduced speed when flashing" it is "when children are present". So if there had been children on the side of the road the limit would have been 25 but since it was a holiday, school was out and no kids were on the side of the road the 25 MPH didn't apply.

    When considering the Durango, think discount Mercedes GL. Literally, this is a discount GL. This is one of the good remnants of the Daimler Chrysler experiment. This Durango makes much more sense than any of the short wheelbase GM models with their useless 3rd row and laughable cargo shelf. I'm curious to see what Dodge does in a few years when Durango is up for a redesign.

    So proud of dodge and this car!! Consumer reports reccomended this car (2015) in its segment besting the other brands in their testings. It is good to hear that an american car is still reliable (although most of them are not).
    Nice car nice design and nice engine. Id like to see dodge&chrysler getting more recognition in their engines and reliability coz usually they are the lowest rated in quality.

    Alex thank for the review. Since I am in the market for an SUV that can actually tow my heavy deckboat (about 4000lbs wet weight) I'm a bit torn by a few SUV's and this is one of them. My other choice is the 2016 Honda Pilot EX-L AWD version and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I know the Durango has a better towing capacity but I'm concerned about reliability. Not concerned about resale as much as we tend to keep our vehicles about 8 years. Dodge hasn't been known for reliability in the past and I'm hoping the Durango has changed that perception. What are your opinions?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 2014 Pilot is quite long in the tooth, it should be replaced this year with a new 2015 model if the rumours are correct. The Durango is the better SUV in most metrics with better handling, performance and towing, more advanced electronic and safety systems and the only V8 in the segment. The Pilot seats one more person and does have a larger cargo area but its age is really starting to show.

    Hi Alex,
    How do you comparable is the Durango to the Infinity QX60? which is better in snow, off-road situations, and it is worth of owning? thanks

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I really like the QX60. People give it a hard time for being a "fancy Pathfinder" and in many ways it is but I still like the look, the interior and the third row room. The fuel economy is excellent as well. As far as off road and AWD/4WD type situations, the Durango is the clear winner.

  • @swishfan3029
    @swishfan3029 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Alex, what are your thoughts on the recent recall to Dodge Durango due to faulty ignition switch? I am very interested in purchasing this vehicle but still a bit skittish on the reliability factor averaging just below average according to Consumer Reports. How would you rate it?
    Lastly, if you had to pick between this SUV versus the Hyundai 7 seater Santa Fe, which would you choose?
    Thanks so much for your work!

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Durango is not subject to any recalls for ignition problems that I know of or have been able to find. The only recalls active on Durangos were for a "brake pedal feel" problem that made the pedal feel softer than normal but that is just for 2012-2013 models.
      Reliability is a tricky thing, in general all cars are more reliable than they have ever been but there is still variation from one brand to another. So while the Durango may be as reliable as a Toyota SUV from 10 years ago the Toyota SUV does rank better in reliability now. Dodge's reliability has been improving as well.
      For me reliability has never been a huge item on my list, this is why I have owned a wide variety of American and European cars, none of which were particularly stellar in reliability. So keep that in mind when I say that the Durango would be my pick. The Drango's road manners are simply the best in the segment. It is well balanced, precise and the V8 is a lovely engine. The ZF 8-speed auto is one of the best transmissions around which is why it is used by almost every luxury car maker from Aston Martin to Rolls Royce.
      I like the Santa Fe as well and the long warranty is compelling, so my recommendation boils down to the Santa Fe if you want reliability and the Durango if you want the better performing option.

    Hi Alex... I have to say very nice video; but I have a question for you. What is your impression on the GMC Acadia?... I' m doing some research because we are looking to get a car with the 3th. Row option; also I have to say I love JEEPS, they are awesome... One of my concerns is that we are on the tall side, so we need leg room and of course we want reliability.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the Acadia but it is getting a little old. You should check out the Pathfinder or the Infiniti version (QX60) of the Pathfinder as they have the largest headroom and legroom numbers in the third row. It's not going to be the driver's SUV like the Durango is but it does have an enormous rear compartment.

An example is my rav4 '07 is filled from top to bottom, from behind the driver/passenger seats to the tail gate. I can't use the review mirror. I noticed the rear seats didn't fold down completely flat. In other pictures the seats seem pretty flat. What's your opinion on this. Could this be a problem if I bought the Durango. You mentioned that the Durango isn't really nimble and you wouldn't call this the sporty option in this segment. Does this also apply to the Durango R/T? Which vehicle would you consider the option? How does it compare to the Toyota Highlander?

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess I should rephrase that, if you could ever consider a large SUV "sporty", then yes the 5.7L V8 R/T would be about it. It is much better balanced than the Highlander and a great deal more fun to drive.

    Thanks for this excellent review. How does the 2014 V6 Durango compare to the 2014 V6 Nissan Pathfinder? Also, recently I drove the 2014 V6 Dodge Journey SXT plus for a road trip and found that it's cruise mode was a bit jerky, the car decelerates when it encounters an upward gradient and then accelerates to compensate, which results in a Jerk. Also, when i try to accelerate when cruise is engaged, the engine took 2-3 seconds to kick-in and accelerate. (The vehicle was new, 2500 miles on it). How good is the cruise experience on the 2014 Dodge Durango?

      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Durango is the more dynamic vehicle, it also tows more than the Pathfinder thanks to a more robust transmission and a bit more power. The Pathfinder gets better fuel economy. Cruise control takes different forms and for the sake of fuel economy many systems delay downshifts as long as possible. While the Durango is also a little reluctant to downshift, having an 8-speed automatic gives the car more choices when it comes to gear selection and makes it feel a little better.

      Sorry, yes the V6 will still deliver better mileage than the V8, even with the cylinder deactivation.

    Would you consider The Durango over Audi Q7 or the Touareg? Im really lloking to get one of these not considering the price tag.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a tricky one. I would take the Jeep Grand Cherokee over the Touareg, I consider them direct competitors. However the Audi Q7 and Durango are targeting a different audiences. The Durango is one notch below a Grand Cherokee Summit while the Q7 is a notch above the Touareg. In actual substance, the Durango handles better and delivers excellent value in comparison to the Audi.

    Alex can you explain "tip and dive" as it relates to handling?

    • @alexdykes
      @alexdykes 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's that feeling you get when you step on the brakes and the nose of the car "dives down" and when you accelerate the nose "tips up". Differences in cars typically boils down to two things: weight balance and spring stiffness. The stiffer springs, the less tip/dive you will get and the better balanced the vehicle the less you get as well, although that has a much smaller impact.

    • @emjayay
      @emjayay 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** There is also suspension geometry. Decades ago engineers figured out that tipping the front suspension back a bit (or something like that) reduced brake dive, which used to be a major thing on American cars. I'm sure they have more tricks today.

    Love your reviews. My wife and I are on the fence between the reliability reputation of the Toyota highlander and the comfort of the Durango. Looking at limited editions of both. Any thoughts that may help us with our choice? Thanks

    • @MylesLucier
      @MylesLucier 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not an expert but I can tell you my opinion on the Durango. The Durango in my opinion is the better choice. Of course the Highlander can ensure a great reputation and safety ability, but the Durango is definitely becoming a revolutionary SUV. It's definitely competing with the Highlander, Ford Explorer, and even the GMC Acadia. The Durango is definitely growing a reputation after these past 2 years. It has a great look and feel to it. With the Durango, you'll be getting reliability and the power. With the Highlander, the safety. You get alot with the Durango.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tricky question. According to the statistics, the Highlander should prove more reliable. The Durango is larger, I found it more comfortable, it has a solid 4WD system available and more room in the rear seats. My first rule in car buying is to spend at least 30 minutes in the car with everyone who will ride in it regularly. Grab your spouse and any kids and sit in the dealer lot for a good long time, listen to the comments. With 3-row crossovers you'll need to decide if the rear seats will be used regularly or not. If the answer is yes then the Durango may offer a more comfortable arrangement. The Highlander has an 8-seat option, so if you need 8 then that rules the Dodge out. The last thing I will say is: buy what you like, not what you consider a "logical" buy. I find that in the long run you will be happier with your purchase regardless of how the reliability pans out.

    • @bng2412
      @bng2412 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for both your comments. The 30 minute idea is a good one. I was going to leave my 8 and 13 year old at home but it does sound like a good idea to take them on a test drive. Thanks again.

      One reason I am considering the Highlander over the Durango is resale value. Though Dodges have been getting better over the years and Toyotas have had their problems, the rapid depreciation of Chrysler products is still there. One reason I think is that Toyota has such bland styling so it doesn't get dated as quickly.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Bartonovich Nickel From what I have read, expected resale value is supposed to be higher on the Toyota, but that becomes less and less important the longer you keep your car.

    Hi Alex,
    Excellent job as always. One question: how was this optioned to include power tilting front passenger seat? When I build a limited on dodge.com, the limited passenger seat only has manual tilting.
    Thanks!!
    Christo

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Limited and RT model have a manual recline, Citadel has a standard power recline and R/T can have the power recline. I'm told by the Chrysler folks that our Limited had the wrong seat and that it should have been the manual recline model. This sometimes happens with pre-production models because the MFG hasn't finalized the trim level options when they were put together.

      +craigcoble2000 I would get the Durango because of teh driving dynamics and the V8 engine.The perfect weight balance in the Durango V6 is only slightly altered by the bigger engine, the 8-speed transmission is sheer perfection and the AWD system is a bit more capable. The Durango is a unicorn at the moment, it's a Mercedes ML that has been stretched and equipped with one of the best transmissions on sale today.

      Most of the issues with the HEMI were with the first gen design, the 2013+ engine has fixed the issues the prior version had. I like the V6 because it is efficient,. but the V8 has a great sound and is the most powerful option in this segment.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's going to be tricky. Your best bet would likely be to put the two child seats on the 60% side of the 60/40 second row so you could still move the 40 side forward for better entry to the third row.

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Noise level: the Durango wins. Suspension: I prefer the way the Durango rides, it has a firmer, sportier ride and handles better. Infotainment: this is another Durango win. Quality: this is subjective, but I prefer the way the materials in the Highlander feel, especially in the upper trim levels. Reliability: according to the statistics the Toyota should be the winner here as well. 2014 is a new model year for them so there are likely to be hiccups but on the whole Toyota leads the pack in reliability.

      It is about the same as both in terms of noise level. The MDX feels more premium and the Jeep feels about the same in most trim levels except for the SRT, Overland and Summit models with the stitched leather dashboards that really spruce up the cabin.

    Great Review!
    I have a 2014 Citadel with the V8 and AWD on order. I keep hearing about below than average reliability from other webistes about this Durango. How much below than average reliability can this vehicle be if it is based on the Mercedes GL suv, the legendary HEMI engine and, like you pointed out, the ZF transimission found in many ultra luxury vehicles? Or is this just import lobbyist trying to sh**t on an American made vehicle? thanks for reply in advance. :-)

    • @AAutoBuyersGuide
      @AAutoBuyersGuide  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most of it is just some odd form of import hate. The ZF transmission is very reliable. What the Durango shares with the Mercedes is primarily design elements rather than actual parts. The suspension, body and safety cells are all based on Mercedes designs. What you actually see and touch for the most part is Chrysler. The switch gear is a mixture as the Durango uses the steering column, window switches and some buttons that are made by the same supplier that supplies Mercedes.
