  • Honda VF1000R special by Thomas Westby
In a world where the reality came before the concept.
Honda's RC213V is a beautiful piece of engineering but at £138k is out of the reach of most of us who desire a taste of the Honda V4 magic. If you're after a 1000cc Honda V4 sportsbike, you could always build your own, which is exactly what Thomas Westby did, starting right back in 1998 when the transformation started.
Thomas's stunning 1986 model VF1000R was actually created before the concept rendering in the video (note for clarity: there is no connection between the two). Modified to get the best out of the mountain roads around his home in Colorado Springs, this 33 year-old V4 is one of the most beautiful bikes we’ve ever laid eyes on.
Featuring a modified VFR750F fuel tank and NSR250 tail unit, the bike even looks like it’s been on a serious diet. With an RC52 SP1 front end, VFR750 swingarm, rear wheel, Ohlins rear shock and ride height adjuster, handling and aesthetics have been brought into the 21st century. There are plenty of other detailed upgrades too, from rear sets to a hand-built exhaust.
Like all good specials, this one may look finished but there’s more to come. A capacity hike will give a bhp increase and a set of Keihin flat slides are on the bench waiting to be configured for V4 duties. A stunning special!

I used to live in Colorado and in 1986 I bought a 1985 VF1000R as a college graduation present to myself, I rode it for 9 years and traded it in on a 1994 CBR900RR. I kept mine in perfect condition and kept it stock except for an F1 exhaust. There aren't too many of these around, and this is one of the best examples I have ever seen, such a great build, I wonder if I might have been the original owner of this bike, probably not, but an interesting question none the less, thank you for putting this online.

This is what I wanted since my 84 VFR all in pearl white. it needs double round headlights. This design needs to be classier. No more alien transformer bikes that look like they were painted by sneaker makers.

I have 3 VF1000Rs. I’d buy the concept one to make it four.

An affordable Honda V4 sportsbike would sell, no question.

Hello, I had a VF1000R '84 back in '89, then after wards 5 Fireblades. Here in Belgium we don't see superbikes like that anymore, after 2007
no Blades anymore, because too expensive, and important the younger generation is much to tall, I used to be tall (176cm/5feet 8), now I am a dwarf...... Besides that, the cops in the '80s were ok, now not. I don't even have a motorcycle license, I got it for free haha, wasn't necessary at that time.

They made a much better bike than the VF1000R for years, it was called the VFR. All they needed to do was increase displacement to a liter bike and they would have had a winner, but instead they deleted the gear driven cams and added VTech, destroying the VFR. And then came out with that abomination so-called VFR 1200 without gear driven cams, and being a very large unwieldy pig. .Very sad.

It compares to the modern Triumph retro designs. If you sqint, you'd swear it was an original. Except for that killer exhaust! It sounds like a moto gp bike! How fn cool is that!?!

Looks lovely ! Not enough people are buying outright big sportsbikes worldwide to make it viable now, which is a shame - Ducati seem to be the only ones to make expensive bikes and sell a fair few. Honda made the RCV, a low volume special....as close as we'll get I think ☹

Here's a brief rundown from the owner: "1986 VF1000RG with Euro 1984 VF1000RE fairing, modified 1986 VFR750F tank, Modified fiberglass NSR250 tail, Handmade custom seat, RC51 SP1 front end, VFR750 swingarm/wheel, handmade exhaust, modified frame with built-in ride height adjuster, Ohlins rear shock, I made all the brake/clutch lines with Earls fittings and hose, Attack Performance pegs, CRG levers and mirrors. And a bunch of other stuff to make it all work"
" I have an oversized set of pistons that I had Arias make to go in and a set of Keihin FCR’s that I need to configure"

Unfortunately honda have lost there way " they once built awsome machines ' rc 30 rc 45 , vf1000r , nr 750 , rc51 , and now we get ? Well we get nothing , honda have lost there imagination

    • @MOTOKANDI

I agree. I was so happy that Honda gave the world a roadgoing V4 sportsbike, then so disappointed that it would cost £137,000. The hope that this technology would trickle down to a more affordable option for non-millionaires has gone, seeing as it's been 6 years since its launch. Come on Honda, get that fire back in your belly.
