  • This video looks at the setting up of safe rigging points for static aerial equipment. We will cover the different types of rigging methods that can be used at home and how to set them up.
There are many ways to rig; we’ll look at the pros and cons. Installing a rigging point will require some knowledge of the forces that will be put on it, as well as whether the structure can take that load.
Skipping these steps could result in you falling and injuring yourself, or even the people in the room above falling on top of you. It’s not worth the risk especially considering the cost of these consultations won’t be prohibitive and will certainly be less than repair and liability costs.

Overall, a lot of good information. For me… the WLL isn’t as important as the MBS if you don’t know the Design Factor used to calculate it. We do use DF (what was used to say was the Safety Factor or FoS) over here but Safety Factor is used by some as well. The Eye Nut you have on the all thread rod for a ground anchor is typically rated for a Pull Out Load for a vertical lift. For an angled or side load the nut should be sufficiently de-rated appropriately, however the pin strength increases as you go from a pull put to a shear load. As far as DF’s go, in the states we use either 10:1 based on the static load of the performer and gear, 6:1 for the charismatic load during the act or 3:1 of of the expected or unexpected potential peak loading… whichever one of the three is greatest. Showing most engineers a video typically won’t give them the hard numbers they need to calculate the needed capacity. The other important thing to elaborate on is the span and location of the point. A CPL is far different than a UDL or 3rd Point Load. The position on the span closer to the supporting structure will change the capacity. Thanks again for getting good knowledge out to everyone!

Hi Mark, do you have any contacts for a rigger in North London? I would like to install a hoop at home if possible. Thanks in advance

Mark, is there a directory of riggers willing to do home installations. I’m looking for someone near Hampshire/Surrey/Berkshire to install aerial silks in domestic garage. Appreciate any advice on where to look or how to find someone. Many Thanks

In other words - don't rig at home!
