Honestly, I'm getting tired of seeing this. No, Toyota is not going to shove an engine design that was developed 20 years ago into a new car. Get over yourself. The B58 is a strong engine, but you morons who haven't driven the new one OR the old one insist on it not being up to the task simply for being an outsourced motor. I have yet to hear a bad review of the new Supra yet, even from people who have driven, and love the old Supra. Get the stick out of your ass and move on. While I can agree in a sense with the purists that not having a manual kind of sucks, it's meant to appeal to a broader market, and not just you jaded losers. It's meant to be an everyman's car, just like the old one, and an automatic accomplishes that in this day and age, where learning manual is unnecessary.

daigo saitos team did it first but there was a fuel fire and the harness was cooked its been down for months because harness is on national backorder. So it was impossible to get. Hopefully he can have his up soon too.

Toyota was only able to afford the r&d that created the 2jz because they were making money hand over fist. They didnt have the spare cash laying around to justify engineering a new 2jz
I'm disappointed to see a brand new Supra have their new engine insta-swapped with an old engine but this is an advertising platform for HKS and they have done brilliant work on the 2JZ. Lets hope HKS is developing goodies for the new engine.

A 3S-GTE, yeah, a I4, why you ask ? Because it was _much_ more lighter and made about 700HP in race trim. The B58 is a good engine, like the 2JZ. The problem is that people hold it in a pedestal for reasons unknown, and anything that isn't a 2JZ, for them is the antichrist. People in the 90's didn't know that the 2JZ was that good, but given enough time, I'm sure the B58 is going to live up to it's chore of replacing the 2JZ

Of course Daigo Saito would be one of the 1st people to swap a 2JZ in the new A90 Supra... But I feel like this swap wont be necessary when the OEM BMW B58 Engine gets time to develop and grow in the aftermarket tuning scene. It's already looking like a very promising engine. Just give all the tuning companies some time, and the B58 engine's aftermarket scene is going to grow and mature into basically this generation's 2JZ. Before only euro tuning companies would make aftermarket stuff for this engine, but now that it's in the Supra so many other companies (especially JDM companies) are going to be releasing aftermarket parts for this car it's going to be very exciting to see this platform grow. Honestly, I'm just glad Toyota stuck to their roots and stuck with a Turbo charged inline 6, unlike Nissan who went with a TTV6 in the R35. TTV6's just wont ever be able to sound as good, pure and exciting as a turbo charged straight 6. V6's are just so boring, and lazy.
This is what supra should've done in the start, keep the new design and interior maybe add the option of manual but they do have paddle shifting, and they should've kept this beautiful 2jz engine....

I think his primary focus for a while now, has been grip driving, I.E., hired gun for Tsukuba time attack runs and Super GT, as well as the 86/BRZ race series in Japan. I'd imagine with a busy race schedule and acting as a hired gun for teams/shops/privateers at Tsukuba time attack events, he probably doesn't have much time to be able to shakedown/test the A90.

Papadakis Racing has a teardown video of the new engine and I will say it's good to see it's a closed block design; a huge problem with BMW engines is the open block / multimetal sleeve design. It doesn't stay square under pressure and you can't deck it, so once the head gasket blows (which happens very quickly if you start pushing boost) the engine is disposable. However, it's still a VANOS engine, which is a design I've never agreed with: gratuitous complexity seemingly for its own sake. Highly prone to failure and it's really limiting at high performance levels. I doubt this engine will ever see anything like 2JZ power levels because it will be too damn hard to reengineer the VANOS system to get enough lift and duration. I'm sure there's tuneability in this engine, but I would never expect to see one above about 600hp - hereas a full kill 2JZ can get close to 2000.

The problem is the comparison; the 2JZ was/is one of the most powerful performance engines of all time so it would take a Hall of Fame performance for anything to compare. So I would agree with the idea that it probably never got a fair chance because of the comparison, plus it was starting from a huge handicap in the form of BMW's (well deserved) reputation for poor reliability.
Evan tho I am against the MK5 haters because it’s still a good tunable car for a reasonable price in a few years, but I have to admit the 2JZ suits it pretty well
