I notice when you take initiative like this you just end up with more responsibilities at the same pay

If I am not a manager, I do not need to go above and beyond my tasks. Asking the manager to do more will give me more work for the same amount of cash as the schmuck next to me who is doing half the work.

This is not going to help you at all. Acting like the well-behaved wage slave is not going to do anything in this economy. If you are talanted in something, keep working on that skill and try to start your own buisness.

I believe you mean well, but unfortunately this is advice that would have been great when you (we) were younger. Nowadays, picking up the broom will mostly just lead to picking up the phone, to making the website, to unloading the truck, to staying late, to coming in weekends, to... wondering how the heck you ended up getting so much work and job responsibility while still making minimum wage. There are exceptions, for sure, but this is failing to recognize what is creating and reinforcing the kind of work ethic you mention in Gen Z in the first place. I'm glad you don't treat your employees this way, but you have to recognize that you're the exception and not the rule in today's job market.

I can see both sides of the argument but youre going to be seen as a dinosaur talking like this to them. Most businesses owners dont reward hard work like this. I told the owner of the last business i worked for to hear out the employees....she pretty much only responded with the narrative you spoke of. Didn't realize the pay was bad so no one got the point of caring. She went out of business after me and a few of the massage therapists left. Pay was trash to begin in this case so none of the meetings and bootstrap talks worked. I told the older generation that the meetings were pointless, they all worked part time and became docile about listening to the repetitive talk....all of the young people left and these were consistent people. She would consistently say no one wanted to work, people constantly left after being hired upon seeing their first paycheck. She kept up the chanting of.......no one wants to work and I'm not putting anything else into the business....which is us. Now she's out of business. Although I see how in some fields this mentality is rewarding....for most people on a specific job it won't pay off. You have to look out for yourself or be hungry.

No excuses when the bad happens you just learn and move on. I left my home when i was 18 for the military and only had 500 dollars in my name now im 25 living on my own with a wife and kid and the only debt i got is my wife vechile, looking to use my va loan after election on a house
