  • There's a big difference between being old and feeling old. Forty can be the new 20. But that can also extend well beyond midlife. Sixty can be the new 40, and 80 can be the new 60.
    Shabnam Islam, MS, is a clinical exercise physiologist and professor who specializes in healthy aging.
    She joins Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast to talk about slowing down and turning back the hands of time.
    Shabnam talks about the two big f-words for ageless nutrition: fat and fiber. One is the fountain of youth, while the other is a dirty f-bomb that can cause you to look and feel older, as well as painful inflammation and diseases.
    Other Topics
    - Orange foods can help you look younger
    - Age-defying nutrients in green leafy vegetables
    - Sea vegetables, bulbs, and legumes are important for staying young
    - Is fiber more effective than collagen?
    - How fat affects hormones and aging
    - Exercise to slow aging and maintain flexibility

    You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to be fit at 73 .Do what I do. I lift weights at a gym.I keep my aerobic fitness through the stairmaster. Eat a Whole Foods exclusively plant-based diet. I take no powders no potions, no hormones, no gels. I’m in great shape ,certainly medically as good if not better than anybody at the gym, considering what they take to achieve their results. Take a screenshot of my picture to the left. That’s a current picture.💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

      Love this and congrats, Rich! I've seen you running around YT. So awesome!! Me too! I have had the pleasure of getting carded at races I do because the race organizer presenting the awards didn't believe I was 70. ;) Or whatever age. This has been happening since I was in my 50's. I've now placed in 289 5Ks or longer for my age group because someone said to me at a race once, "you can't run or be competitive on a vegan diet." That thought had never occurred to me so I set out to set the record straight. Others are faster than me (though now I'm nationally ranked as a sprinter and have gotten the Gold twice at the US National Senior Games), but this was only about to show that vegans can do anything athletically. And here we are. Keep preachin it!

    Getting up with the sun / going to bed with the sun, for those of us working FT this is almost impossible. I get home around 4:30 and it gets dark by 5:30. Then I'm up well before daylight to get ready & to commute to work. Once retired I think this can be followed easier.

    • @RichS.73yroldbodybuilder

      I don’t think this was supposed to be literally get up with the sun and go to sleep with the sun. I guess when it goes down since we have 12 hours days that would be a lot of sleep if you could even do it. I think it means don’t stay up too late and do all these things that are bad for you get adequate sleep and don’t sleep too late in the morning💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

    • @drshabnamislam
      @drshabnamislam 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely achievable when you retire. And if following a whole-food plant-based lifestyle is what you are doing... well then retirement should FEEL amazing. However, for those of us living in the real world and are NOT retired, getting up with the sun and going bed with the sun is hard. However, when you do rise, make sure to get some early morning light in those eyes. Enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and take it all in. Even when overcast you can reap these benefits of dopamine regulation!

    Before becoming WFPB in my 30s I was very overweight, feeling 90 years old. Now I'm 3 years WFPB eating very low fat and feel amazing and at peace at 57 after overcoming decades of binge eating disorders thanks to a WFPB way of eating

      As I like to joke a little...ask your doc if plants are right for you. But since there's no money in broccoli, odds are, he/she didn't get too many nutrition classes ihn med school. I've been the beneifciary of Dr. Barnard's advice, as well as the high-fiber research that was done 40+ years ago. I've been able to continue running (and placing in my age group 289 times) as well as continuing to rank nationally as a sprinter for my 70 year-old age group. A healthful vegan diet is one of the best kept secrets in most of the world. I lost 30 pounds going vegan and while that wasn't huge relative to some other larger losses that grab headlines, for this 5' 3" bod, it was monumental. ;) It's all relative and what works to allow you to live your best life. Congrats Lulu on your continued success! Carry on!!!

    Great information! I saw a video by Dr. Berg today where he said that beef is the best anti inflammatory and that fiber is horrible for our systems🫤 He even suggested that a carnivore diet will end certain digestive problems. Dr. Islam makes so much more sense tome, especially since I eat a Whole food plant-based diet and feel great while so many eating the SAD diet or keto feel miserable. Thanks Chuck!

    Her formula for training sounds good, but if you look at the people who live the longest (Blue Zones), they aren't training for agility, flexibility, power once a week. They're just active and they eat healthy

    • @drshabnamislam
      @drshabnamislam 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is absolutely accurate! Most people in these blue zones truly have a zest for life! If you look particularly at the community in Loma Linda they LOVE engaging in daily activity (particularly outdoors since the weather suits it) and obviously the WHPB diet. This formula does work for those who choose to follow a gym-based general strength training approach. But let's be clear: there is no one-size-fits-all approach!

    I am 83 ( PTL)…i have been very shy and therefore very sedentary all my life…doing not much more than walking…i quit eating meat in my 20’s and no drinking or smoking, tried to generally eat healthfully…and am able to move around easily and with no joint pain at all..❤people are often surprised at learning my age…. i think im “old”- looking! I stopped eating meat because I blame meat for causing cancer. My mother and grandmother died from cancer. I have had melanoma spots removed. I did have cancer in my left breast removed but have refused the recommended meds related to cancer. Currently I “ feel” healthy and am able to drag trash cans up long, long driveways. I do have osteoporosis though! And mild hypertension ( but refused the med)..

    How do we even recognize that we are eating too much FAT!!!! Especially when all we see is ppl cooking with delicious Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Ghee, Butter, and yes Coconut Oil….goes in EVERYTHING!!!!! It just seems so unnatural to cook with “a bit of water” 😬

    • @drshabnamislam
      @drshabnamislam 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I was about to say, but @lisaengel838 hit it on the head. Use vegetable broth... it can add a lot of flavor, surprisingly. But honestly, roasting a some vegetables with a little bit of olive oil and can feed you for days in the best way! It's not realistic to remove it from the diet completely. It's a matter of being conscious when we do eat it.

    What can I do if I'm disabled with my feet and cannot get that type of cardio exercise? I can walk about 10 minutes until the pain begins and I can exercise in the pool, but I never get that type of intense exhaustion. Even when I exercise with some weights I don't feel that way

    • @drshabnamislam
      @drshabnamislam 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I was going to recommend aqua classes (they can be incredibly intense especially with the right flotation-resistance modalities) but also stationary cycling. There is also the cycle ergometer (cycling with the arms) - Is that something that is accessible to you? I know they have them at the local YMCA. Intensity is key: Pushing yourself to get that heart rate up should be the goal.
