  • MENISCUS ROOT TEAR RECOVERY/ Weeks 4-8 /DCFitt
    Hey guys, just a quick update on my meniscus root tear surgery and recovery. The last several weeks have all been pretty similar in physical therapy and upper body exercise, with the exception of progressively adding 25% body weight starting at Week 4. Just wanted to fill you in on how it's been going, and where I go from here. ALL circumstances and bodies are DIFFERENT. But, I do want to share my personal experience in hopes of benefiting others and staying connected to you. One thing is for sure, if you are physically able to workout and move today...you, me, we are fortunate and blessed! So, get out there and move!

    Thank you so much for this and for your workouts. I’m a very physical 51 yo - my root tear came after my podiatrist chocked my shoes trying to fix an Achilles insertion injury 🙄. I had surgery yesterday and despite dr Google (and every other site) saying I need a brace - my surgeon says no. But I’m not going to chance it - am actually doing to follow your program as I think he’s not conservative enough. Question - my root tear required 2 stitches- but actually at the root not through the bone. Was yours the same or was your root disconnected from the bone? Thanks appreciate your videos. You’re the only one who has posted anything like this!

    I did not research prior to my surgery and had no idea some wear a brace for recovery. I had full root tear and did not weight bear until the one month mark. Week 4-5 I used one crutch, weeks 5-6 I walked with no crutches. It is interesting how different everyone’s recovery is. I am 62 and do not want to repeat this injury, so hope the PT I am following is correct. I have been doing leg lifts and stretches, but not as much bending (none past 90 for the first 6 weeks). Just starting to bend gently now. My question is what kind of small brace is worn after the big brace comes off? I might want that added support as I lengthen my walks. Thank you.

    Great video. I'm at week 5. Very similar experiences so far.

      Awww, hang in there!! Are still non weight bearing? It feels so freeing to be able to start placing small amounts of weight on your leg.

    Hello.
    I’m 4 months out of surgery. (6 weeks of which was non weight bearing). I’ve been having a lot of pain and inflammation behind my knee when I walk. It comes and goes. I returned to work recently and have been walking a lot more. My doctor isn’t concerned at all and says pain can last a while.
    How long did it take for you to get to the point where you were able to stand up and walk with no pain?
    Thanks for the videos!

    Thank you for sharing your experience! I have quoted you several times to friends and family-the fear of falling is very real! Did you end up falling at all? I am at the end of week 3 and had a fall a couple of days ago. Scary for sure-but I think all is ok. One more question-my doctor has mentioned that for my future cardio, no running nor power walking. He wants me to stick to using either an elliptical or stationery bike. Do you have a preference? Thank you so much and all the best to your continued healing!

      So sorry about your fall! I was very nervous of falling. I never did fall, but still find myself being cautious of my knees. At 52, being thoughtful of our joints is a good thing! On that note, I think the elliptical and the bike are both great options. I used the bike quite a bit because I found some great TH-cam bike workouts. Sadly my running days are over aw well, but I am able to go walking so I try to get in some extra steps with my dogs. Hope you continue to heal and find a new, healthy normal!

    How soon were you off the crutches and walking?

    I am on week 4 of a root tear on my left knee meniscus. It does require a lot of patience. I am not allowed to do any weight bearing until week 6. So I feel like there isn't much I can do. I just do leg lifts, hamstring stretch, and fire up the quad muscle. I can't wait to get back to my normal workouts. Feeling frustrated.

    • @DCFitt
      @DCFitt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I know EXACTLY how you feel. I tried to sit on the floor and work upper body and core, ALWAYS taking the time to fire up my quads. It’s feels lame, but it’s NOT! So important for YOU to keep moving physically and MENTALLY. Be sure to check out my earlier surgery videos and the floor seated videos. Keep me posted on your progress, because I can totally relate.

    How did you tear your meniscus if you don’t mind me asking ? Wishing you speedy recovery xx

      @DCFitt  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jane! Yes, I was running to catch up with my family and I leaped down from the sidewalk and landed in such a way my meniscus was torn. Nothing exciting, just basically a normal, everyday movement that went totally WRONG!

    How many months did it take you to get back to being 100 percent. I am almost at week 4 post surgery and it is really tough mentally as I was extremely active and this is really a hard recovery from a mental standpoint

    • @DCFitt

      I totally know how you feel. I just focused my need for activity on my upper body. I am a year out, and just completed my first 6 Week Challenge! I have wanted to record one for years, but strangely it didn’t happen until this year….the same year as my surgery! I definitely have to make modifications for my surgery, leg, and my muscle development, in that leg is weaker because of it. I am also not able to run anymore, and I was a runner prior to surgery. But, now I make workout modifications, and have become a walker. All to say, I have recovered, but still deal with inflammation, and also have had to make long-term activity changes... but I’m also 53 and have cartilage issues. So, I would sum up by saying, FOR ME, there was recovery AND then reality of future activity modifications…all of which has been an adjustment, but nothing to complain about.

    When do you anticipate being able to do squats to the ground with weights or will you ever be able to do that safely as time passes?

    • @DCFitt
      @DCFitt  ปีที่แล้ว

      At this point in my fitness life (I’m 51) I do NOT plan on low squats ever again. There are too many other options that will be safer on my compromised meniscus…plus I’m protecting cartilage. Good question.

      @@DCFitt thank you, the reason I ask is because with mountain biking if I need to drop my dropper post on the move my knee doesn't like that flex pre repair, also skiing I need that flex under compression and end range flex to work for me. Tough decision whether to go for a look and see, my doctor who I will not name put is THEE man on root tears and classifying them suggested live with it, repair it if amenable, or trim it. Tough call knowing I may not get that full flex under load and compression back. Thanks. I'm older than you BTW but highly athletic so I need ROM and function without pain.
