    but I still don't know what the dog ear effect looks like. it wasn't pointed out. I didn't even get to. compare it myself. he rotated the head t too fast.

    • @steff4
      @steff4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Mannequin heads don't usually have prominent ears so its difficult to show him tucking the hair back, but its basically the added weight/bulk that occurs from over-directing the hair too much, around too many 'corners' as he was saying. That type of over-directing would result in cutting a bit less hair so it results in a line which appears less clean.
      Edit: You can click the settings on the video and change the speed if that helps see it better also :)

    • @steff4
      @steff4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yeah, I definitely agree with you; he needs to take more time explaining it, and return to the original problem to show how it was corrected. I just wanted to try and help explain it a bit XD

    You might want to do drawings on paper indicating more clearly what you mean, because I'm not gettin' this, and I wonder how many others need more help too.

    • @MelePaasi
      @MelePaasi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      downbntout I get it perfectly maybe you're a visual learner

    • @GwenApMannanan
      @GwenApMannanan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you looked at both sides, the one with a traveling guide was smooth and properly cut the first time. There was an obvious bump and irregularity in the first side he cut.

    • @MelePaasi
      @MelePaasi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JazminMarieee downbntout is talking about his explanation of the clock method. Now you're the one that doesn't understand his comment hahaha

    • @MelePaasi
      @MelePaasi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Gwen Ap Mannanan the commenter obviously understands the difference between the doggy ear look and the preferred bob (it's obviously shown in the video) but the problem is the guy explained a clock method of cutting and that per isn't visual, it would be nice if the camera was shown looking down at the head of hair so we can see the way he splits the hair according to his visual clock in his mind

    • @Ketutar
      @Ketutar 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mele Paasi, "obviously"? There's nothing obvious in "what you mean" and "I'm not gettin' this". What "you mean" with what? What is "this" the person isn't getting? "This" could be the whole video and downbntout doesn't get anything. Or it could be the thing JazminMarieee is talking about, it could be the thing Gwen is talking about, it could be what you are talking about, or something else.
      IT'S NOT MATT WHO NEEDS TO BE MORE CLEAR, IT'S DOWNBNTOUT.
      Also, Matt said "if you have questions, ask them in the comments. "I'm not getting this, you aren't clear enough" is not a question, and it's really difficult to try to figure out what is it the person needs help with.
      I got everything he said, even though I am not a hairdresser. MY HUSBAND GOT EVERYTHING HE SAID, and he's not a hairdresser either, or especially interested in hairdos, and he's extremely visual thinker. MATT EVEN SHOWED WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT! It couldn't be any clearer if drawn on paper!
      So, no, I don't think Matt needs to be more clear, and I don't think you should go around laughing at people who do their best to help even when the help and clarification is asked in a very muddled manner. There's nothing obvious in Downbntout's comment, except that he/she doesn't "get this". Maybe Downbntout would need to draw on paper what he/she means and think hard about what he/she doesn't understand, and THEN ASK THAT. In a polite manner without demands and putting the blame of misunderstanding on someone else.

      Mannequins always have nicer hair because it’s sewn in to an exact science. So, if you were to look at the “root” area on the mannequin you would see that the hair comes through in little bundles, several hairs coming out of one hole, like a Barbie doll on a larger scale. And it has to be uniform in thickness and weight throughout the head. Our heads, on the other hand aren’t perfect, because they’re natural. But that’s a good thing. If you had hair like that mannequin people would say, “nice wig”.

    To the people who don't get the "dog ear effect". At 9:09-9:10 he circles his finger around the "dog ear effect". You can stop the video and see if you notice anything different to at 9:11 when he shows with his finger and then his whole hand the line on the other side of the hair. You can go back and forth as many times as you need. It's pretty clear.

      Ketutar Jensen I have curly hair and wear it bobbed. Today’s stylists just don’t know how to cut curly hair anymore... or do they have a clue how to dry it!
      I want to show stylists this this video! Coz they give the dog ears all the time & it’s super annoying.

    I'm having trouble telling the difference, but I did have a stylist refuse to color my hair towards the ends in front of my face because she didn't want it to dog ear. I still don't know what dog ear means.

    • @tamarafromrazorandpen82
      @tamarafromrazorandpen82 7 ปีที่แล้ว +79

      Look behind the ear at the end results of the video. The dog eared version has a bulk behind the ear, slightly sticking out breaking the even line, or more the even texture of the cut. When you look at the other side there is no such thing, the line is even in texture everywhere. Hope this helps.

    I get it. For those who dont know. In a graduated bob the line should be a solid diagonal going down towards the front. Not a bob and then suddenly gets long. (Like a flappy dog ear hanging down) this \ not --\/

    Hey all, just wanted to note for those that may not understand when he says the term 'dog ear'... it's when the sides of your hair that fall over your ear area are too thick/ heavy, causing the overall outline of your hair to look like a beagle, or some other long-eared dog. Lol I always called it the Christmas Tree Effect but it's all the same. Your hair looks weighted down at the bottom, too flat up top. Hope this description helps. 💗

    If your client has thick hair, she'll be back in 3 weeks to get rid of the dog ears no matter how great you cut the hair the first time. (Speaking from a client's perspective only)

    • @kitten_purrrs73
      @kitten_purrrs73 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      not if its done properly and thinned and textured . she will be back when its time for a new cut. And some styles need upkeep sooner then others. That's why its so important to Learn these things to be the best stylist u can be ....but that takes time and wanting to learn ...I've been a stylist 25 yrs and seen some at 30 yrs and they still do basic strait cuts with no texture or anything ..... I'm so happy to see these videos out because many schools only teach the basics ....and everything else you learn when you apprentice and from other stylists ....and if you don't get placed with a good stylist when you apprentice it really can affect your career ...

      Mary Hines maybe they need to not only thin near the ends and go farther up the hair shaft ?....so it doesn't grow back in 6 weeks and get confused with just textured ends? .....or your not being thinned out properly ....we usually don't go to past half way cuz short hair has more spring to it and if u cut too close to the scalp you have it sticking up out of the hair that's laying flat which can be frustrating to always see peices of hair sticking out looking like its breakage ....but if your thinned out good we don't have to do it every 6 weeks cuz hair only grows a little over a cm each month ....OR you have such thick hair that even your thinned hair to a different stylist feels thick lol....I've seen thick hair where the amount of hair on the head is A LOT and also the hair itself is thick and has what's called a medulla inside ...not everyone has that ....and it can be very springy so have to be careful not to thin to close to the scalp but you can if you have a style that needs to stick up and it works great for them styles....I've also seen clients who's hair is soooooo thick that you actually have to go in and cut very thin full strip sections along the hair right down to the scalp to take out bulk and the other hair can lay flatter over top......and this takes up keep obviously and can be drastic looking if they make the line too thick and your hair moves and the longer hair covering it WILL show but it sure takes out bulk if your hair is THAT thick that you need this drastic measure ..... ALSO washing your hair with only cold water helps the cuticle stay flat and apear thinner and the type of products make a big difference.There are many shampoos and other products out now that are for thick hair.Rinsing with apple cider vinegar helps some ppl too. I would never use bleach on extreamly thick hair either.Bleach swells the cuticle making it thicker.I'd stick with only colour if my client wanted a change.This is all just what I'd do as I stylist ...we all have our own ideas and opinions and thats what makes all of us our own "artist" and have the clientele we do and how much we should charge.My cuts start at 100.00 and I will refuse to do something a client may want if I know it won't look good or it will cause damage. My clients are walking advertisements of my work.I care about the health of the hair and if it makes me lose money by putting bleach on very thick hair knowing it will only make it even more less manageable then so be it.lol. I'd let my client find a stylist that doesn't care or would take the time to consult.Clients come to me for my professional advice and that's what they get no matter how much I need to explain to them why I won't do something.This usually earns their respect and makes them realize i really take my profession seriously.So if a stylist isn't thinning your hair enough you should really tell them.It also helps to find one good stylist you trust and stick with them.The more they do your hair the better they learn your hair. Your so lucky to have thick hair .....some ppl don't feel they are, but when you see someone with thin hair crying cuz they can't hide thin spots ughh it breaks my heart. Sorry if this comment is so long ..lol..just had so much to say 😊 and am chatty today.So used to talking from 8 am to 9pm with clients and I'm off today hahhaa. Good luck with your thick hair.And i hope you feel Lucky and beautiful to have it.xo

      I have shoulder length hair and they do have to thin it a lot. To the point that it looks like they cut 6 inches off. I do only go to the beauty college so I can afford trims every 6 weeks and perhaps they're being conservative.
      When I had a short cut (like in the video), I was back every four weeks to get rid of the dog ears because the back grew way faster than the front.
      I've had my hair colored, cut, and permed by students and NEVER left unhappy though
      Also, it's -30 sometimes (with windchill). I can rinse with lukewarm water at best. I do only wash 2x a week unless I style my hair with a lot of product so it's certainly not as damaging as your every day/every other day washers. My usual style is an updo of some variety because I wear a hair net all day.
      On another note, my hair doesn't hold color or heat styles well. When I curl my hair, I have to set the curling iron up to 300 degrees and hair spray the crap out of my head to get the curl to hold for more than 5 minutes. It takes me around 1hr to curl my entire head (lots of hair). Am I the only person who struggles with this?

    This was so fascinating. I moved tow years ago from my fabulous hair stylist who always always always gave me perfect a-line bobs and lobs. The new hair stylists I've found seems to struggle with my cut. I never knew it was called a "dog ear" but that is absolutely what happens to my hair half the time she's done it. The" good" side you did is what i use to always get, and the "bad" side is what I end up with now. She's young, and has some talent and I love her as a person, but my hair just can't with her anymore. Gotta try to find a new person!

    I like this “deconstructing the haircut” teaching approach! As a newly licensed cosmetologist, it is so educational to actually see the difference! It’s one thing to realize that your haircut didn’t have the hoped-for result, but to SEE specifically what happened and what you need to do if you want to change the outcome is so instructive! Thank you! Hoping for more! Maybe how to avoid those holes that can happen in front on layered haircuts!?

    My daughter has been rocking a short bob haircut for several months now. Its been cut professionally three times, but in between each cut she and I have cut it together. I know the basics about haircuttung: section, clipping, and how to cut layers.This shows me how to do it much better. Only difference is she likes a flatter angle with shorter length in front.

    Still have NO idea what a dog ear effect is.

    • @adaeeva
      @adaeeva 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Apparently it's what my hairdressers call the mushroom effect? Thick on the bottom, and normal on top.

    • @HairByAriiianna
      @HairByAriiianna 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      xMourningStar I'm a hair stylist-- dog ear effect is when the front is longer and less shapely than the back. It gives the appearance of just hanging there and has no real smooth transition. It looks extra heavy and guests never know what to do with it since it literally just hangs. That's why it's important to use the traveling guide for most a-lines to get a more seamless transition.
