I started making pipes about a year ago, (Im only 16). I have greatly improved them since then, and have smoked one a few times. My brother and I actually made a blend with mint instead of using tobacco. My very limited experience has been good so far though. I've found that smoking a pipe around a campfire on the edge of a mountain lake is one of the most relaxing things you can do.
I don't smoke, never have, but I've always liked the smell of pipes and cigars. Sitting on a porch in a rocking chair on a cool summer's night with a pipe in my hand sounds like fun, though.
@@Herr_Flick_of_ze_Gestapo if I can quit heroin this year..just quit Methadone and subs (took 12 years) I am going to start pipe smoking..so luv the idea of smoking something that if you dont smoke you won't puke shake and rob people.
I'm not big on nicotine neither. I think that it's given me massive ocular migraines from withdrawal, after drinking remnants of energy drinks that were contaminated with tobacco.
I gave up smoking after forty years a pack a day last year. You said this isn't to replace nicotine but I don't really understand what it's for then and where the relaxation comes in anymore than sucking on a pen? I like the idea of something to do that's relaxing but worried I only want nicotine?
@@ciararespect4296 Pipe smokers focus more on flavor, but you definitely feel something from the nicotine in all but the weakest blends. You don't get an intense buzz like a cigarette consumed in 5 or 10 mins. It's more like a warm glow, an elevation of mood over the course of a bowl that typically lasts an hour or so.
I don’t smoke, but as a kid I remember the smell of someone smoking a pipe in the bleachers at every one of my baseball games. Playing baseball was one of my favorite childhood memories, and the smell of a pipe bring me back every time I smell it. I appreciate pipe smokers.
Another important addiction to consider is a thing called Pipe Acquisition Disorder (PAD). Too many of us start and are always on the lookout for that next great pipe, being lured in by the more affordable price of pipe tobacco. Great video.
I use a pipe but I never smoke pipe tobacco. instead ill buy a cigar and grind it up to smoke. While it may seem useless it limits my smoke intake and once its gone I don't smoke again. so instead of smoking one cigar for a day i'm smoking about a 5th of a cigar and rationing out the rest over a span of 3-4 months. I don't smoke very often so this system works out for me.
@@jokestersnarrations9831 wow, i definitly should give this a try! I am a pipe and cigarlover, but I do only smoke pretty rarely (1-2 times a month in average, i guess), but didnt knew that you could just smoke a cigar in a pipe... how do you grind the cigar? Just cut them in small round pieces and rub them between you hands, or...?
i started smoking a pipe because my family hated the smell of my cigars, (even though i smoked outside exclusively because they dont like the smell, but cigar smoke smell clings to you worse or something) but most pipe tobacco smells very nice, so they compromised and so did i and i love smoking a pipe more than cigars now actually, also you can buy wooden pipes shaped like a cigar which is cool , i love a cup of coffee and my pipe in the morning, and some spiced rum and my pipe in the evening
soo anything that you can stimulate yourself intermittently with smoking a pipe you like... 😂. I would like to smoke a pipe when i get into my 60s I cant wait actually 😂 having stabnility in my life and peace of mind that my life is behind me sounds nice.
This is just like getting into straight razor shaving, all takes time but in the end you will be acquitted with a hobby that lets you focus on the moment.
Another issue is that good classic pipe tobacco blends seem to be increasingly hard to find. People should be prepared to see their favorite blend go out of stock or be discontinued depending on the country of origin and laws there.
I know that issue quite well, smoking a shisha for many years, the Egyptian source of my favorite tobacco disappeared almost overnight during the ArabSpring uprising a decade ago. Radical moslems shut down tobacco production since it was "haram" in their religion. For the last few years I could only find tobacco with CBD oil added to it something I did not want to partake in with my tobacco. Only recently I found a similar blend without the CBD additive but not having time to relax and light the shisha I have no idea on what it is like. Improperly stored tobaccos can go stale and taste bad.
I just started, and it seemed some sites wouldn't ship to me, and others would. It's something I check now first off. It just limits what I can get. If one site is out but one site has it but won't ship to me, then it creates a problem. I'm not sure why certain sites won't ship to me. I've seen a list of states, but mine wasn't on it. Only thing I can think of is because some tobacco is flavored and they don't want to take a chance. Idk. 🤷♂️
Just getting into this hobby, actually smoked a corncob last night. I purchased a churchwarden but since this is new territory I figured going through each step with the corncob to familiarize myself with the process. I liked having to slow down and “be in the moment” and actually enjoying the experience which is something I’ve taken for granted lately.
Excellent points. I've been smoking a pipe now for just under a year and watching your videos and a number of others have really helped me get the most enjoyment out of this hobby. You're absolutely right about having to take your time and learn about all the intricacies and nuances of pipe smoking.
One of the reasons I started smoking a pipe which I am still new to is coming from smoking cigars and the length of time it takes to smoke a full cigar. I feel I have more control over the amount of time I’m willing to dedicate to smoking a pipe is easier than a cigar. Hope this helps someone as it has helped me
@@StarsWithScars well one could also stick cigarettes into a pipe or chewing tobacco or nasal snuff or instant coffee powder or oak tree leafs or grated potatoes. Its just a big faux pass. pipes are for pipe tobacco.
This is possibly the best pipe smoking related video you've ever made. I turned to nasal snuff for nicotine because of this. I have 0 patience and always scorch the hell out of my mouth on pipes. Now I just smoke them once in a Blue Moon, but I must admit pipe smoking does provide the best flavors when it comes to smoking tobacco.
Pipe smoking seems interesting. I have an addictive personality and am not so patient, so I use Swedish snus (General). Got me off cigarettes very easily.
@@grettirasmundarson9980 Nice, I have yet to try snus but I want to. I had Camel snus before but that doesn't count. I want to try real snus. I can smoke a pipe more often now, I figured out bright tobacco burns me no matter how slow I smoke so I smoke dark tobaccos and I'm fine.
All good points. It's been vastly better smoking a pipe indoors in my own space vs. freezing my ass off outside. Total game changer. As the founder of a pipe club, I encounter a lot of curious and earnest newbies that are happy to learn pipe smoking from another person--often more so than from their own research. However, most attendees end up smoking cigars or cigarettes instead😕 I personally learned a ton from your channel in 2017 when I became fascinated with pipe smoking, so thank you! One last note: it seems common among pipe smokers not to *need* to smoke, whereas it's a *problem* if a cigarette or vape smoker can't have their nicotine. I haven't had a pipe in two months and it's not an issue. My theory is that addiction is a function of the rapidity and quantity of nicotine delivery.
I went into this video ready to argue. After watching, I wholeheartedly agree on every point. I gave up cigarettes and have been free from them for eight years as of this writing. I picked up the pipe hobby after five years cigarette free. I enjoy the freedom from nicotine and the comfort of an occasional pipe. Smoke happy friends.
I agree with all except number 2, because we can become more patient if we try. Especially through smoking a pipe, or almost anything really. The reason patience is a virtue is because it is a virtue.
I'd actually argue that if you're impatient smoking a pipe can help you learn patience. I'm a cigar smoker and it's definitely taught me to slow things down more.
Sounds like a pretty well rounded assessment to me. Great video idea. I heavily agree with your points on pacing yourself and smoking for the experience, not just to satisfy a certain compulsion.
I'm in my mid '70's now and been smoking tobacco pipes since my freshman year of highschool. When I say smoking, I mean occasionally to moderately. It depends on the season and the weather as I mostly smoke only outdoors. For me it's a leasurely pleasure to relax and enjoy. This is the first time I've seen your channel and I applaud your effort to introduce the art to those curious enough to investigate it. I well remember there was a time long, long ago when the tobacco pipe was quite commonly enjoyed by men mostly, and to a much lesser extent, even by some women. Anyway, thanks for your exposure to what could again become a worthy exercise of peaceful thought. Einstein and many other great minds were pipe smokers you know.
I made a few pipes for customers, mainly replacements for the pipe heads. It's a fun hobby to enjoy while smoking a pipe for me. Working with wood that way has always been relaxing to me. What i absolutely love is smoke some blend with blackberry leaf and some mind altering substances mixed in while sitting in my tub. I do have to say smoking anything isn't very healthy. Then again, a lot of things enjoyable aren't particularly healthy. That's why we enjoy them in moderation and that makes it a bit more special to me. This was a great video!
Pertaining to location, I enjoy smoking a pipe when I'm taking walks around the neighborhood. I carry my pipe, a pipe nail, pipe cleaner, and a couple lighters and do everything on the go. Not for everyone, but it solves the location and aroma issues.
I think your point about research is a great one. I love researching things and so learning about all the different kinds of leaf, cuts, blends, and companies, etc., is very enjoyable to me. Curing methods, pressing, etc. I love that part of it.
Thank you for the straight-forward message here. I've been contemplating for a while as to how I would kick the habit of smoking cigarettes. I've quit twice before and picked it back up later on in life. I'm almost thirty now and I've been looking for an out to save my body from anymore unnecessary harm. In understanding the message that you've presented here- it is definitely NOT a cigarette replacement. However, through personal experience (when I quit cigarettes the second time) I took up drinking ridiculous amounts of coffee. The addictive personality bit hit me hard, especially when you said that you really need to "know yourself," and "reflect" on who you are before taking it up as a hobby. Now with consideration to what you have said I've become convinced that smoking a pipe provides me with the opportunity l've been seeking to accomplish it (Quitting cigarettes). I don't have to inhale, it's a manageable routine that I can adopt and follow, and it also provides me with time I can set aside to (as you put it) "contemplate". Smoking a pipe can serve as a reminder to me as to why I don't smoke cigarettes anymore, it's not a replacement, it's an investment, its a resolution, and it is the right move to make. Thank you Brad, and thanks again for not pandering to pot-heads. Great video, best dissemination of information I've ever encountered, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Really good comments. I've been smoking a pipe for years. It really is down to what mood I am in and some days just not in the mood. However, many people who start pipe smoking use this as an idea to replace something else, like cigarettes. I never personally have enjoyed cigarettes and know I never will, but many view pipe smoking as a replacement to cigarettes and they always end up impatient or extremely unsatisfied from the experience. And yes, pipe smoking is a reflective meditative act so time is needed to slow down and get "old school" - pipe smoking harks back to a time when things were more leisurely paced perhaps. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. From a Londoner in England all the way to good ol' U.S.of A. Best wishes.
definitely. todays society is about instant gratification. short attention spans, the screens obviously contribute. back then before television, people would sit and read, or smoke, listen to music. actually relax
Been a pipe smoker for years , just one bowl a day , it's great trying out different blends and finding your favourites , I always smoke outside and in winter I usually quit for the coldest 4 months , it's a great way to turn off and find some me time , I do like some nicotine but normally hover round a medium strength tobacco , the cost is very low , like brad I smoked cigs for years quit ( not easy) went for a couple of years , got bored so took up a pipe , don't inhale so am fit as a fiddle , mind you when I do stop in winter ime always reading or watching reviews like Brad's and can't wait to start again.
Smoking a pipe has been the best way for me to quit cigarettes. If i have a 45 min pipe in the morning, i dont want a cigarette for at least 4 hours. I then have another pipe. Im good then untill after dinner. I have about 4 bowls in a day. More often just 3. From 25 cigarettes to 3 pipes is epic for me. Its the slowing down mind set that really helps. Esp when getting tense from the quiting. It helps set a standard and home base to think about when a cigarette craving kicks in. Contrary to the advice in this video, i highly recomend using a pipe and its entire mindset to get off cigarettes. Ive smoked cigarettes for 30 years and found quiting almost impossible untill i went full into pipes. The hobby of collecting and connoisseur attitude is another fantastic helpful part of the switch to pipes. 🤙
I started off smoking cigars, then moved to rollups as my dad smoked roll ups, then moved to the occasional pipe, i haven't smoked a pipe for some years now as i now vape but the trouble I'm finding with vaping is you tend to vape way to much because its very quick and easy as it entices you to vape more frequently i find that its never out my hands and do it out of habbit and not because i need the nicotine or thoat hit, I've now decided to ditch the vape and go back to a pipe, i found out my old pipes and lit one up recently and its surprising how much different it is, I'm finding 2 session of a pipe a day is perfect for me and look forward to lighting up, i have a session in the morning before i go to work and one at night.
I enjoy the ritual aspects of it, the time it takes to load it, having the time to really enjoy it. Pipes, cigars, and yes do the research! All part of the enjoyment.
I started smoking a pipe as a serious hobby more or less when Bradley did. And I found S&T very soon. And I agree very much with what he says. Experience is wisdom. Also, only with a certain sensibility one may fully benefit from experience. Let me share my experience. In my case, I started the pipe to replace cigarrettes. It was wrong, so I started wrong on pipe smoking. But I endured. And I learned. I would advice not to get in contact with any kind of nicotinne use. Once you have, the only place to go is pipe smoking (cigars as well). And once you are there, you must learn the trade. Watch Bradley carefully, from the beginning. He speaks the truth, because he was able to learn from experience.
Great points Bradley. The only thing that jumped out for me was based on personal experience, eg no. 1. I used to be very addicted to cigarettes and started to feel a lot of negative repercussions due to it. I also smoked cigars and had positive experiences with them. I tried to quit with cigars a couple of times (just to be clear, you don’t inhale cigars or pipes and that is the only reason this is less damaging) and it never worked. I tried pipes because I felt I would be able to have a shot of nicotine anytime I needed it. I sought out high nicotine blends. Within weeks I found my craving for nicotine naturally rounded the curve and plateaued. I no longer wanted a cigarette and haven’t had one since. That was 8 years ago and other than a nasty case of early tongue bite (slow down when you start) I feel a lot better. So just saying it did work for me.
I smoked cigarettes for twenty years. Your reasoning is absolutely sound. I stopped and two months later and tried a pipe and my wife loved it at first and then hated it when i tried a different blend. It became a huge waste of time I couldn’t afford at the time. The contemplative time it afforded me simply could no longer work with my work with my public work schedule. Good points. I no longer smoke anything.
If you are living with someone who doesn't like pipe smoking create a study room that way you have peace of quiet and you can smoke your pipes cigars drink your bourbon in peace this advice came from my grandfather right now it is Christmas so Merry Christmas to all
This video just popped up in my You Tube. I have been smoking a pipe for 54 years now and at the time I started I had to learn by trial and error. But then of course many more men smoked pipes back then and one kind of learned how to smoke a pipe long before you even thought of picking up a pipe to smoke one. The one regret I have is that I did not buy more of my favorite tobacco to age when I was still working. Now that I am retired I find that my favorite tobacco is no longer made. However I do still have a little bit of some very good 20 year old McClelland 2015. I should have bought several hundred pounds of it back then instead of stopping at 150 pounds
I remember walking around my local Smart and Final market as a kid and always ending up at the tabacco section. I am now a pipe smoker, and the smell I remember most was the aromatic tabacco blends that I did not know existed at that time in my life. Always takes me back to those days..
I used pipe smoking to quit vaping and I only smoke my pipe maybe 3 times a month but it’s become a hobby of mine and I just enjoy it and I don’t need the nicotine at all just enjoy the experience
i smoke a long stemmed kiseru pipe, ive found it better than when i was smoking, as it limits the ammount of both tobacco and times i smoke, the long stem cools the smoke enough to allow the tobaccos flavour to come through more smoothly and clearly, the real secret to smoking a pipe is to find the right tobacco for the style of pipe
I thought this was going to be somewhat of a tongue and cheek video about buying too many pipes, too much tobacco, etc. I was surprised somewhat to find it was a thoughtfully made video and had some things for everyone to consider. Well done!
Reasons I smoke a pipe: 1. Flavor 2. Enjoyment 3. Stress Relief 4. Hobby 5. Getting to try new tobacco While I won't say nicotine plays no role, it's not a major point. I enjoy the nicotine hit, I enjoy the effect, but I can go weeks without a pipe and not suffer.
I smoked both pipe and cigarettes for years. I took up pipe smoking, after smoking cigarettes for 15 years, as an attempt to give up cigarettes. This guy is correct about the need for a nicotine fix. I never inhaled pipe tobacco smoke the way I would with cigarettes, nowhere near to the same degree hence pies were not giving me the fix. I eventually went cold turkey for both pipe and cigarettes, about twenty years ago. I've just resumed pipe smoking again. I miss the relaxing effect of pipe smoking and the different tastes. You have to put a little work into it. Pipe smoking for me beats cigarettes any day of the week. I appreciate that that is just my opinion. I don't need that nicotine fix and appreciate the risks, but comparing pipe smoking to cigarette smoking and weighing up the risks, a Peterson Merschaum pipe full of Erinmore, Three Nuns or Dutch Blend wins every time for taste and de-stressing. Rgds. MCG.
Sage advice. I have recently started smoking a pipe as a more affordable than my enjoyment of cigars. I find that at the end of a stressful day, that there is nothing more relaxing than smoking my pipe with an aromatic blend.
I really enjoyed my pipe, but a little nicotine in my body and my blood pressure gets high a little. Like from my normal 180 to 183-185. The problem is I feel blood pressure increase, and that feeling stays for 2-3 days after a pipe. If I have a cup of coffee with a pipe, I feel really funy, and that doesn't feel good on my heart. That funny feeling is really great in some ways, I had enjoyed it, but somehow, I think it's better not to stress my body. So, I think, it is about how your body reacts. As for me, regardless of my enjoyment of good tobacco taste and smell, I quit smocking for good.
Great video! I used to be a very impatient person but pipe smoking has helped me relax and slow down so I disagree with that part. Also my wife hates some of my pipe tobaccos, and loves the smell of others.. I just smoke the ones she like when we’re walking together or whatever else we’re doing together
As a pipe smoker of 50 years this is a very informative video. I would particularly agree with the addictive personality point you make because at the end of the day, no matter how you wrap up the description, hobby for example, this is still an unhealthy thing to do and expensive. I love my pipes but if I had my time again I wouldn't smoke anything! :)
I only smoke cigars, but im intrigued. Seems like a lot of work lol. With cigars the work is toasting it right, but once its going on the high-end no touchups needed. Even for cigars, your points hold true. Esp a nice private outdoor area where you can smoke.
Great video! Pipe smoking is something I rarely do, but it actually helped me become MORE patient. I lived a very fast and hectic lifestyle, and generally was on the go quite a bit, whether that be mentally or physically (next mental project, next location to travel to). The pipe helped me slow down and live in the moment. It also helped provide a discipline of maintenance that is quick to miss.
I hear ya. I went all day without without smoking the other day while hunting and when I finally had 1 it was the most flavorful smoke I've had in over a year!
Great advice. I learned some of these things through trail and a few errors along the way. I do enjoy pipes. I took a 35 years hiatus before I quit cigarettes and cigars before coming back to the pipe. Cigars are great, but they require too much time and are too much nicotine. The pipe is just right. Thoughtful lunting is a nice break, but one does have to be prepared.
Ive went from cigarettes to gum and pipe.. gum during day when i need quick fix then pipe at the end of the day or weekends.. anywho i cut back on gum until i didnt need it anymore. Switching to pipe switched my brain from instant gratification addiction to a treat here and there.
Thank you for the info. Im a heavy smoker, but im getting tired of harming my body so much. I like the idea of pipe smoking because it seems like something you can look forward to and relax. Im so sick of chasing that nicotine fix...
I smoked a pipe in my 30s (late 60s now) but gave it up in favour of cigarettes due to point 2 - impatience. I doubt very much if I'll ever start smoking one again but I do still use one as a relaxation/de-stressing aid. I'll go sit in the woodshed with my empty pipe and just feel the stress slowly drop away. I find it also helps me work out problems (I'm teaching myself programming as a hobby). In summary I think you are spot on when you say that pipe smoking is not about the nicotine but about achieving that state of mind.
Everything you have said here is 100% accurate and important to know..I have only got this after a year of pipe smoking and 10 years clean of cigarettes.
I quit weed because I need a UA done and I bought an elf tank which is nice but I’ve always liked the smell of pipe tobacco and for this month since I’m on that break I think it’s a perfect opportunity to buy a pipe to use and enjoy a little during this break from weed.
6:00 I live in Sweden and nature here is crazy beautiful I love smoking and walking around the forest or sitting in a meadow it’s so relaxing it’s insane
For those smokers wanting nicotine replacement but still want to retain a (significantly less damaging) relationship with the tobacco plant, may I suggest nasal snuff as a smokeless route to achieving that (while gaining a new found appreciation of tobacco).
I would compare pipe smoking to making coffee/espresso you need to know what your consuming and how to prepare and consume it I love it thinking of learning to grow my own tobacco
@@justinvandemark4703 Pipe Acquisition Disorder and Tobacco Acquisition Disorder (it's a joke). It's becoming addicted to buying cool new pipes and a ton of different tobacco blends because there are so many of them!
Your #1 was funny to me. I originally started smoking a pipe as an alternative to smoking cigarettes. Eventually, I fell in love with pipe tobacco so much that I quit smoking cigarettes and waited several years to ensure I was over cigarettes simply so that I could properly enjoy pipe smoking. I love my pipes, but I honestly don't smoke one very often. A few times a month at most. But I do love my pipe tobacco. Sadly, most of the pipe tobaccos I love most have become unobtanium in the last 5 or so years.
I didn't want to open that pandoras box so instead of pipe tobacco i just would buy a cigar and grind it up to smoke. It weened me off and taught me to ration, so instead of one cigar id have a 5th of one and have the rest over the next few months. I found myself with much more free time and saved money knowing that once that cigar was finished i wouldn't get another until select holidays, weddings or funerals.
It's a pity that I saw this video so late. I agree, pipe smoling is no substitute for cigarettes. My "smoking career" was like this: I started late (in the mid-thirties) with cigars, then cigarillos. At some point someone offered me a cigarette, which I then smoked, always cigars and cigarillos in between. So I was a commuter between pleasure smoking and addictive smoking. In the end, I smoked almost nothing but cigarettes. Then I quit smoking and didn't smoke again for almost 10 years. Now I smoke a cigar and a pipe from time to time. Maybe 3 or four pipes a week. In the winter time I hardly smoke at all. The advantage of smoking a pipe for me is: puer enjoyment without addiction. I have no problem taking several months off and it is a pleasure to smoke a pipe again afterwards. I write this after viewing topic one. After viewing the rest of you video I can fully subscribe what you told. It's the same with so much more things. Buy an espresso machine and you have to learn how to make a good one. And it's definitely not under the first tens :) Thank you so much for this video.
I quit vaping to smoke a pipe, I couldn't be without my vape in my hand always puffing, now I have around 3 small pipes [Peterson 264 Irish harp] a day, morning, dinner and evening. I smoke in the van too, makes it smell like a proper work van haha
It's funny because nearly all the reasons for not smoking a pipe that you mentioned, I have. I smoked a pack of cigarettes per day for 24 years and wanted to quit for a long time but was never able to. I decided to quit in January of this year and I took up pipe smoking just out of the blue. I loved it right off the bat, and I did use it as a nicotine replacement. I haven't had a cigarette since January, at first all I could get my hands on was Captain Black and some other cheap blends from the gas station. I started off inhaling here and there for about the first month but it's been 8 months now and I haven't inhaled since the first month. I have ordered some stronger blends online such as haunted bookshop and old Joe Krantz and I love them they are strong enough to satisfy. I am also a former drinker, but have been sober for over 7 years going on 8 years now. Pipe smoking has completely changed my life, I used to sit there after work and on the weekends and smoke cigarettes and play video games with most of my time, but now I have completely given up video games, haven't even turned on my PS5 in months because it doesn't fit into my pipe smoking lifestyle. Hard to smoke a pipe and play a video game at the same time. Instead of playing video games and smoking cigarettes I now spend most of my time doing household chores and spending more time with my wife. My wife luckily does not mind the smell, I can smoke any blend I want right in the living room in my recliner and she doesn't mind a bit. On my work days I usually smoke two to three pipes a day, one before work and one to two after work. On my days off sometimes I smoke five or six pipes a day. My life has changed for the better, my lungs are doing so much better, I'm getting so much more done around the house, I'm working on my vehicles, I'm spending way more time with my wife. I recently took up working out, my wife bought me a weight set. And pipe smoking has now evolved for me into much more than just a nicotine delivery system, it's become a way of life. It's helped me develop my patience because I was a very impatient person, it's made me think of what's more important (My wife and getting things done around the house, working with my animals). I'm healthier than I've ever been both mentally and physically. Now I've been collecting pipes and pipe blends and just living a much more satisfying life overall. Pipe smoking can be an amazing way of life and really open your eyes to what's more important.
Great video! Good and well balanced! And that Elizabethan looks really good. It's not available in my country but I got my hands on one tin last year and I just loved it!
Great video Bradley, think you've covered every aspect of the hobby 😀 👍 and have left it to each individual to decide what's best for them . Stay safe 🙏
I am a hobby smoker. Pipes and cigars. I used to be a cigarette smoker but quit for ten years. I occasionally ( once or twice a week) load a pipe or smoke a good cigar (careful not to inhale) . This aids contemplation. I love that I am not addicted to nicotine. And pray it never happens again but I realize that addiction is a puff away
I only smoke a pipe if I'm certain I have an hour or so where I will be left alone. I don't mind company, just don't come at me with the problems of the world. It seems every time I think I'll have a pipe my attention is required somewhere else. Pisses me off, but then perhaps it keeps me honest as well, or perhaps on those rare occasions where I can truly enjoy a pipe, I appreciate it that much more.
i've been tried to quit buying a cigarette packs by smoking a pipe. Believe me, pipe smoking is much more addictive but in a good way. Since I've got to be more well organized on my pipe cleaning, and find a great time to enjoy an hour of smoking one bowl. And the rich variety in the taste as well. maybe addictive isn't the right word. Enthusiastic much more fitting. I also tricked my urges of nicotine craving by telling myself that one bowl is enough for the day. because you know, the pipe tobacco aftertaste are that AMAZING!!! im ngl, smoking a pipe is the great decision i've made.
I smoked a pipe since I was in high school. I'm in my late 50's now. Like you, I also smoked cigarettes, more than I smoked the pipe of course. About 7 years ago, I had a medical incident where I was flat on my back for 3 days and couldn't smoke. Due to that and being told I needed to quit the cigarettes, I decided to stop but not sweat over it if I could not. A week turned into a month, then six months, etc. For the psychological end of it, I vaped using the e cigarettes then switched to 3 cigars in preparation of going back to the pipe. A year later, I went back to smoking my pipe. However, it HAS become a nicotine replacement tool. I probably smoke between 5 and 7 bowls a day. My doctors do tell me that it's a lot safer than cigarettes because I don't inhale plus, unlike cigarettes with all those added chemicals, I smoke just natural tobacco. I did some research recently and found a study that showed that men who are pipe smokers actually live a bit longer than non smokers. About 2 to 4 years longer. I also read than a small amount of nicotine is good for you.
I have recently "began again," tried it as a young man...the impatient/being in the Airborne made it impractical at the time. AND I HATE CIGARRETTES! Both parents smoked like chimneys. Now I am older...more established I am trying again, and doing OK. I try and relax after a long day, and it fits better. Old habits die hard so my brain keeps defaulting back to "hit it and get" mentality. Pondering ways to preload a smaller bowled pipe..one brain flash, imagine a "Keurig" preload...lol...pop it in...tamp and light🧐 , so during the day I can take a break for a smoke... But as you say, "that ain't what pipes are about!" Anyway...Thanks for the videos.
I make pipes and absolutely love a good pipe while camping, however it’s not really about the nicotine for me(I mean occasionally it’s nice to take the load of) but I really just enjoy the feeling of smoking a pipe, it’s very relaxing
All my friends, some even active anti-smoking, love the aroma of my pipe. I'm often asked to light my pipe by them, just for the smell. Of course, one has to be a clean and considerate pipe smoker.
Uh oh.....I do have an addictive personality. Shouldn't have started smoking pipes 30 years ago....or began to enjoy beer, wine & spirits. But.....that ship has sailed.....and I'm happy & relatively healthy for someone fast approaching 60. Sorry to have interjected my self-deprecating sense of humor. Great video...and now you have another new subscriber.
Bradley - You have exposed some excellent concerns for the new pipe smoker to consider. I hope they are also aware of TAD and PAD. They can infect you fast. On another note, I like your early upload time (I’m on the West Coast, too). Thanks.
My issue is the nicotine tolerance. I quit smoking cigarettes about 21 years ago. I always enjoyed being around my father whom smoked pipe. I wanted to try and picked it up about a month ago. I enjoy it and am very patient and watch a lot of vids to educate myself about technique, pipes and tobacco. I would like to try different blends, but some of the ones to try are way strong in nicotine so my choices seem limited and not smoking a lot seems to alter getting the endurance to try them. Too strong makes me feel crappy. Any help with that?
You could use 9mm active coal filters, as they also do filter 80% of nicotine. But use quality ones, as the cheaper ones often taste nasty. Dont want to advertise for them, but i used stanley, chinese ones and Dr. Perls so far, and the Dr. Perls were the only ones with no interfere to the tobacco taste, although they made the taste more mild, bad tongues could even say weaker, overall. Another advantage of those filters is, that you dont have this bad aftertaste too long. Without filters i personally have it sometimes even till the next day, with them it is gone most of the times after ~2 hours, but for sure after you brush your theeth.
was looking forward to this video, Bradley, when you dropped the teaser on your Sunday show ... all great points; 100% agree ... another major consideration is simply - budget/expense ... it is possible to get by on the cheap, but to truly explore this hobby, it's gonna cost you some coin - unless you're a celebrity, like you, and folks generously donate stuff to ya!! ;)
I’m 16 quit vaping, don’t want no Chinese chemicals in my lungs. I figured I’d try this cus it’s classy, it’s been done for centuries. I ordered some tobacco seeds, and gonna grow cannabis, tobacco, and my own food. I figured if I use it, I need to make it myself. I’m going to make a pipe. Thanks for the info man!
Not to be rude… but when I started smoking a pipe it was just something I did. “Ah, a tobacco store, I will buy a pipe” and then I bought it. No research. I asked the man behind the counter for a good tobacco blend. He gave me a really good one. Then after 2 or 3 times I smoked my pipe effortlessly, and loved it. No research was needed, try and fail is also an option. But if one have to go an extra mile just to learn how to smoke a pipe, or learn how to enjoy it. Then why begin in the first place? I was a smoker of cigarettes and I also rolled my own without filters. Then smoking a pipe looked interesting and I knew that the tobacco for pipes could be much better in some ways, and smoking the pipe could be way more relaxing experience than rolling a cigarette. And it was. And I figured out what kind of tobacco I liked by trying a few different types, and found out how to stuff and smoke the pipe just by trying myself. I personally think that is more interesting :) But enough rambling; my point is. You do not have to do a bunch of research. If you truly want to start smoking a pipe, then you do that. And where is your sense of adventure? If you know how to do everything by researching things before you try, how will you ever learn something by yourself? Alone with your thoughts, away from your phone. Just you and that thing you want to try. (Hobbies)
I like the Nicotine replacement because I'm trying to quit smoking Black & Mild cigars, that's because I smoke 25 cigars in 3 days!☠️ I'm also glad that I'm not impatient as well, because if it will take me a long time to get it ready, that means the less cigars I'll be smoking.😉 I even have a good area to get everything ready, and since I live alone, nobody else will be here to smell it too. An since I want to quit smoking 7 to 8 cigars a day, I'm hoping smoking a tobacco pipe will help me smoke less. Financial reasons of course.😁 I really need a new hobby, and I'm always down to try something new.👍 I'm glad I'm the type of person that likes to do my research before I do try something new too. It sounds like smoking a tobacco pipe is the way to go.💯
I also agree about quitting cigarettes. I quit and went almost a whole year with no tobacco. I came back and started with cigars which are good too, but I prefer my pipe a lot more. Pipe tobacco is easier to store and taste and smells better in my opinion.
Had to check this out since I've seen a few of your tobacco blend reviews. Pleasantly surprised at the quite logical reasons you gave. Have you done any pipe type reviews?
Facts from the medical community in Sweden. (Not my personal experience/expertise). 1: Any use of nicotine replacement sustains the need for nicotine and supports as well as maintain the addiction. 2: Nicotine addiction can take as much as two years to break. 3: Going from one or two packs a day to one cigarette a day does little to nothing to prevent the addiction. Nor does adding replacements. Holding up a few months may not even cause a dent in the addiction.
I started smoking a pipe about 10 years after I quit cigarettes. I love the fact that pipe smoking is never about “I need this.” It’s always about the flavor, relaxation, and contemplation.
Lol a mint pipe mix!! That’s hilarious. Im growing my own tobacco to use in a pipe, cant wait to taste it
With mint? U need to do a video about that bro would like to hear about that
Cmon Jason what Is your post my guy btw you in cali
Get off the weed
Well Jason that sounds lovely
I don't smoke, never have, but I've always liked the smell of pipes and cigars. Sitting on a porch in a rocking chair on a cool summer's night with a pipe in my hand sounds like fun, though.
just try it. you have no idea what you are missing.
Also TAD - Tobacco Acquisition Disorder. Even if you never open the god damn new tin

Another issue is that good classic pipe tobacco blends seem to be increasingly hard to find. People should be prepared to see their favorite blend go out of stock or be discontinued depending on the country of origin and laws there.
Exactly.
Tsuge: Four Seasons series was one of my favorites. And i absolutely miss them still
JM Boswell will solve that for you
I just started, and it seemed some sites wouldn't ship to me, and others would.

You can stick a cigar into a pipe. Just saying
@@StarsWithScars holy shit. A Pip-gar if you will
@@StarsWithScars well one could also stick cigarettes into a pipe or chewing tobacco or nasal snuff or instant coffee powder or oak tree leafs or grated potatoes.
@Richard LaFleur I use the internet suppliers since I live in the U.S.. Are you referring to Brasil Mit snuff by Pöschl?
Yep, I definitely don't "crave" it when I don't do it. Very different from cigarettes. Thanks for watching!
Who’s watching this while smoking there pipe ?

Mom doesn’t like me smoking pipes and she’s in the house so I cannot now but I’d certainly have a corncob in my hand if she wasn’t
Agreed, I’m fairly impatient but I want to try this out to slow me down and bit and give me some time to think
Thanks so much for sharing!
After seeing a real lung just surgically removed from a smoker, I gave up cigarettes and anything with nicotine.
You don't inhale pipe smoke, though. There's no proven correlation between pipe smoking and lung cancer.
I think it definitely draws that kind of person. I'm the same way!
My pleasure!

That's actually a really great improvement. Perhaps not perfect, but much, much better on your health than a pack+ a day! Well done!
Excellent…been at it for 53 years. My pipes are companions thru life for destressing, reflection, enjoying an evening
I totally expected this to be a parody video where you list all the reasons why pipe smoking is great! But this is actually quite useful. Thank you!
That's good to hear! And yes, just because it might not work for me, doesn't mean it won't for you. Cheers!

I was very much into the pipe hobby before and I enjoyed it very much. The researching, looking for intresting tobaccos. But Now I am tobacco free.
i smoke a long stemmed kiseru pipe, ive found it better than when i was smoking, as it limits the ammount of both tobacco and times i smoke, the long stem cools the smoke enough to allow the tobaccos flavour to come through more smoothly and clearly, the real secret to smoking a pipe is to find the right tobacco for the style of pipe
I thought this was going to be somewhat of a tongue and cheek video about buying too many pipes, too much tobacco, etc. I was surprised somewhat to find it was a thoughtfully made video and had some things for everyone to consider. Well done!
Reasons I smoke a pipe:
1. Flavor
2. Enjoyment
3. Stress Relief
4. Hobby
5. Getting to try new tobacco
While I won't say nicotine plays no role, it's not a major point. I enjoy the nicotine hit, I enjoy the effect, but I can go weeks without a pipe and not suffer.
Lucky bastard
I smoked both pipe and cigarettes for years. I took up pipe smoking, after smoking cigarettes for 15 years, as
an attempt to give up cigarettes.
I recently got into pipe smoking and I just love how theres an art to it, and if you do it right you actually get to enjoy it better than a cigarette.
I quit the pipe 30 years ago, was killing my taste buds, but love my cigars!
I hear ya. I went all day without without smoking the other day while hunting and when I finally had 1 it was the most flavorful smoke I've had in over a year!
This makes no sense.
Great advice. I learned some of these things through trail and a few errors along the way. I do enjoy pipes. I took a 35 years hiatus before I quit cigarettes and cigars
before coming back to the pipe.
Love this! I got into pipes 20 years ago. Its best enjoyed with a whiskey of your choice sitting on the back patio at the end of the day.
Snuff is a whole other rabbit hole. 😊
I would compare pipe smoking to making coffee/espresso you need to know what your consuming and how to prepare and consume it I love it thinking of learning to grow my own tobacco
As a new user of pipes, (I'm 42 years old), I really agree all the points in your video.
From Corsica Island.
Excellent video. As a 70 yr old, I smoke once a day, maybe 5 days a week, and really enjoy the experience. Always say watch out for PAD and TAD.
What are PAD & TAD?
@@jokestersnarrations9831 Do whatever works for you. Cigarettes are the enemy. I quit smoking cigarettes in 2014 and haven't touched one since.
Reasons you may have missed:
> Really bad breath.
> Cancer in the mouth - lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, palate, uvula.
And it's definitely not under the first tens :)
Thank you so much for this video.
My pleasure! I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I quit vaping to smoke a pipe, I couldn't be without my vape in my hand always puffing, now I have around 3 small pipes [Peterson 264 Irish harp] a day, morning, dinner and evening.
I smoke in the van too, makes it smell like a proper work van haha
You shouldn't smoke a pipe... that way there's more tobacco for ME!
I'm glad you had a chance to try it!
Great video Bradley, think you've covered every aspect of the hobby 😀 👍 and have left it to each individual to decide what's best for them . Stay safe 🙏
Thanks 👍
Good luck, and thanks for watching!
Fun fact, if you have had coronary stenting done, it takes as little as one smoke to re-occlude that vessel.
Damn, got a tobacco hater for a doctor. I've got 4 stents, and the biggest problem is what you eat !
I love smoking my pipe while I watch the sun come up and at the end of the evening. It is so relaxing.
I make pipes and absolutely love a good pipe while camping, however it’s not really about the nicotine for me(I mean occasionally it’s nice to take the load of) but I really just enjoy the feeling of smoking a pipe, it’s very relaxing
I loved the video. As a pipe beginner I really appreciated this honesty and your clever ideas about pipe smoking. Greetings from Spain.
Thanks for watching!
You hit the nail on the head! You make some very interesting points! Thanks for sharing!
Bradley - You have exposed some excellent concerns for the new pipe smoker to consider. I hope they are also aware of TAD and PAD. They can infect you fast. On another note, I like your early upload time (I’m on the West Coast, too). Thanks.
Duly noted!
Excellent treatise on our hobby of choice! Thanks Bradley!
Been smoking a pipe since 88. Picked it up from a platoon sergeant in the army. Don't really see stopping at this point
Without filters i personally have it sometimes even till the next day, with them it is gone most of the times after ~2 hours, but for sure after you brush your theeth.
was looking forward to this video, Bradley, when you dropped the teaser on your Sunday show ... all great points; 100% agree ... another major consideration is simply - budget/expense ... it is possible to get by on the cheap, but to truly explore this hobby, it's gonna cost you some coin - unless you're a celebrity, like you, and folks generously donate stuff to ya!! ;)
I've been REALLY lucky with how generous people have been.
I personally think that is more interesting :)
But enough rambling; my point is.
(Hobbies)
He makes some interesting and valid points! …each one is a gem! Thanks for sharing! :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for sharing!
Is it okay to smoke an antique Peterson pipe?
As long as it seems to be in good condition. Many of my pipes are from the 1960s.
Had to check this out since I've seen a few of your tobacco blend reviews. Pleasantly surprised at the quite logical reasons you gave. Have you done any pipe type reviews?
Good stuff man, enjoyed this. Oddly I think I enjoy everything else around the hobby as much or more than the act of actually smoking, lol.
Advice on what brand to buy for your first pipe.
Best flavor?
