  • In this video I give a quick tutorial on my style of the float and fly fishing technique for topwater flies thrown on spinning gear. I've seen a few tutorials on the float and fly technique but none have shown how to fish it topwater with spinning gear. I give quick explanations of both in this video and show me catching a couple fish using each technique. This technique is also very effective on trout.

I tend to only fish for bluegill/crappie using this method. Some days you will outfish everyone at the lake no matter what they are using. Especially on a heavily pressured water when everyone is tossing heavy subsurface lures, a nice subtle dry fly tied to a float is a much more finesse presentation. On any given day, a subtle approach makes all the difference in my experience.

I LIKIE THAT CRAMER ON THE WALL!!! I use to use that technique to catch trout in Alaska. I didn't know how to fly fish and i saw everyone catching them on fly reel. So i did the same thing and was killing them on spinning reel. The flyfisherman was like What the hell is he throwing! LOL Good Video Brother Cramer!

Thanks, man! This technique is totally under-rated and very effective. I think I'm going to use it more often. Maybe I'll try targeting some smallmouth with it once the water clears around here.

It's great when you just have a spinning rod. I have a fly rod now that makes the presentation better, but a float and fly can get the job done, too.

Thanks for a great video...how do you like the Ugly Stik Crappie rod or how does it compare to your GX2?

Thanks! Great question. It's basically a shorter white colored version of the GX2 except the reel seat is different. I bought it for my daughter Vivian because I thought she could use a bigger rod. She had been using a 4'8 ultra lite GX2. (The crappie rod was a 5'6 light, if I remember correctly) For me, this crappie rod kind of falls in no-man's land in terms of usage. At 5'6 it's not nearly as accurate casting light 1/16 oz lures as a 6' light GX2, which is what I use. But, is doesn't have the flexibility of the 4'8 ultra light to allow you to whip lures out there to make up for the shortness. My daughter still prefers her 4'8 ultra light GX2 to just about any other rod (now we have it paired with a Sienna 1000 reel and they seem to be working well together). So, for a crappie rod or multi-species rod, I think I would just go ahead and go with the GX2 in light or ultra light (I like the reel seat better on the GX 2 also because I like trigger the reel with my index finger and it is more comfortable for me.)

nice , what kinda fly , in your opinion , I can use for a big bluegills?

Honestly, they will bite almost anything that looks 'buggy'. So, anything that looks like a bug will work pretty well. I also like small black micro leech patterns. They look more like tiny fry.
