Rescuing a baby flying-fox; this is Rum'n'Coke

  • Rum'n'Coke is 2 week old Black Flying-Fox pup who fell off his electrocuted mother on powerlines. There were 2 calls for this baby; one MOP boxed the baby and left it for the rescuer, who couldn't find the baby when she arrived and the MOP said someone pulled up in a car and picked up the box before the rescuer arrived.
    Then there was a second call a few hours later when a passing MOP noticed him behind the fence. All I could say about this was that it was great spotting by the MOP, who must have heard the little one cry, to be able to see where he was hidden.
    I accepted the second call and listened, looked and couldn't find him. I played the sound of a mumbat calling to a baby bat, (even though my recording was of a Grey not a Black.
    Little Rum called out, which gave me the direction I needed to isolate where he was hanging out.
    Many thanks to MOP Lukas for hearing, identifying and calling this rescue in.
    Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for me. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult).
    tolgabathospital.org/donate/
    Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me.
    If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me.
    IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt.
    The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie.
    Here’s Jenny’s email.

      @@Megabattie Well…here’s hoping it works more often, it definitely shortened the search time. Rum ‘n’ Coke was very well hidden down there. I guess most cases aren’t so well camouflaged, but I recall one that was in the grass on a back street, and you must have passed him 6 or 8 times scanning the verge. It took me a bit to make him out even when you had the camera pointed right at him..
      I wondered if the person who took the box was monitoring calls and wanted to get a baby. You remarked on people doing that a few years ago, and wasting rescuer’s time by rushing out to a call, and not clearing it, just so they could have a baby to raise.🖤🇨🇦

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We'll never know why someone collected the box; if it was a rescuer trying to one-up someone, it didn't work because they obviously didn't get the baby (unless it was twins and the person who boxed it said only one). It was quite a long street too; if someone's going to steal a baby they have more chance in a short street where they go and just look for the bat on the powerlines in the street.
      I think the one in the back street was called Percy but I can't remember now. He was difficult to spot but once I looked there, he was obvious.
      I nearly stepped on a baby a few nights ago when I was rescuing late at night, and the MOPs said baby was in gutter. I couldn't see the baby in the gutter or under the car so I stepped up the kerb and nearly trod on baby who had gotten himself up onto the kerb. Fortunately he started to cry as my foot plonked down about 3 inches from him, and I didn't step on him.

    • @tamarrajames3590
      @tamarrajames3590 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Megabattie True…some things we will never know, but I can’t imagine anyone who wanted a baby just leaving a twin unprotected out there. I can’t recall the camouflaged bat’s name, but it easily could be Percy…I will search him up and see. It just struck me how hard he was to see, until you saw him and focused the camera, then you couldn’t not see him. I think there was light rain or maybe dew on the grass too.
      I’m glad your foot missed the little one who climbed the curb…that can get your heart pumping when you have a near miss. The thing is that so often, by the time you get to the rescue site the bat has moved somewhere near, but not where it was. Seems to happen less with babies than the adults, but your curb climber found a way. It’s a good thing they talk. Hope you are getting some sleep amidst the chaos Meg.🖤🇨🇦

    • @Megabattie
      @Megabattie  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Don't think I named him Percy because I can't find it under that. Since I accidentally deleted my database and haven't restarted it, I can't search easily unless I remember the date range. It was cold, I think, and it was raining. I remember the location just not the name.
      It might have been Mac because it was near MacAulay street.@@tamarrajames3590

    Just a thought, but have you tried one of those telescoping grabbers that old folks use to get high things off shelves?
    It would give you some reach when your arms just arent long enough.
    The only thing i would test though, is that YOU have total control over how hard they grab onto things.
    If you can control it, then you have the security of knowing it wont crush the flying fox.
    Or, it can grab onto the branch or whatever they're clutched onto, so you can pull it closer to get the flying fox.
    Anyway, it was just a thought...

      Occasionally; sometimes it has climbed away, flown away, been given the wrong location by MOP, or been picked up by someone else and taken to the vet.. Sometimes it's just gone and I don't know what happened.
      I did a powerline check on a bat last week; couldn't find the bat, and phoned the MOP for the locations she didn't reply. I did a 50 metre wander around of the adjacent streets, following the powerlines.
      Then I asked a gardener who was loading his car if he'd seen it - and he said yeah, was on the powerlines crossing the road, and pointed. No bat there. I was about to phone the energy company to see if they'd been there before me and had taken it down, and as I was walking back to my car I practically walked over the squished bodies of mum and baby. Very squished. Bugger
