    OK, Dir En Grey introduction:
    Rules.
    1. Dont expect the same style in every song. They have so much variety.
    2. Lyrics are most important. Always watching with subs.
    3. Lives are better than on albums.
    4. They are together since 1997 in same band formation.
    5. They did massive chang visually and musically over the years.
    6. They say their music is special and not for everyone. And this is so true.
    7. When you got into them, you are captured.
    8. The singer (Kyo pronounced like in Kyo-to) write all the lyrics and have an insane vocal range. Autodidact, developed over the years. He have an insane vocal range from high whistle screams, to angelic voice, to low growls and low screams. It´s insane.
    9. They did live tours with Apocalyptica, Korn, Stone Sour
    10. They may have a huger fan base around the world, than in Japan.
    11. If you have the chance to visit a live show, go! The live shows are insane, even with language barrier.
    12. All songs are about the singers emotions himself or written about another perspective, like rape, abusive household, bullying, failure in life, failure in love, insanity and so on.
    13. They tell a story with each song.
    14. They are so unique. lyrically, musically. So don´t expect, that they fit in a sheme.
    15. The singer have two other bands . Sukekyio pronounced: ska ke yo, ( i tried my best to vocally in english) since 10 years, who are more into 80ies style in last time. And Petit Brabancon, who are more punk, since 2021.
    16. The singer is also great in art and poem.
    17. They have many ballds, many hardcore songs, many rock songs, many pop songs manx metal songs. But as I said before, they won´t fit in a sheme.
    18. started as a Visual kei Band (was a huge thing back in the indie scene in the 80ies, 90ies, early 2000 back in Japan), then got more into western rock, metal. finally found their style which is unique.
    18. song recommendations ( all live with subs) :
Embryo live, Karasu live, Macabre live, Conceived Sorrow live, Diabolos live (its may one of the best songs to get a feel for the singers vocal range), Rasetsukoku live, Zakuro live, Tousei live, Kuuoku no Kyouon live , Kodou live, Hageshisa to kono to mune... live, Garden live. Inconveniend ideal live... and many others...

not all songs are better live. Different sense for example is way better on album. Ware Yami Tote, Dozing Green. the only songs I can think of that you absolutely have to listen to the live version is : Vinushka, Tousei, Ain't afraid to die, Macabre, World of Mercy and Decayed Crow. The rest is whatever.

@Angel Eyes I actually agree on that. I can't understand why under every video related to Dir en Grey, almost everybody nonstop says that their live songs are better. In my opinion the opposite is true, the studio versions are amazingly crafted and with the risk of being hated for that I must say that as amazing Kyo is, he is not perfect live contrary to the official records.

There will be never a singer like him. He is one of a kind despite his flaws. The most amazing thing is the fact that he is self taught.

Yeah the range and places he goes are mind blowing to say the least! Truly an incredible one of a kind singer!

Their singer, Kyo, seems to delight in switching up his tone, his vocals, his types of screams. There are entire songs that, without a translation, sound like he's playing the parts of multiple people, and it's remarkable - Vinushka is really where the band takes out his full range and beats you to death with it, lol. You seem to already have some fans recommending stuff (yay!) but people intrigued by his voice I always recommend dreambox, decayed crow, otogi, uroko, and Elisabeth addict from his band sukekiyo :) glad you're enjoying giving them a shot!

Yeah I really dig his range and his almost random approach to the singing, thank you for the suggestion I will check that out

That was fast! Thank you for uploading these videos right after I asked for a Dir en grey reaction :)
I will watch your reaction to "Increase Blue" a little bit later (I'm already curious what you thought of the song as it's quite different from this one).
I think Dir en grey are a very personal band in the sense that most fans create a pretty deep relationship to their music. The lyrics are definitely important for that but everyone interprets them differently and Kyo usually doesn't talk about them. We know that he takes a lot of inspiration from the news and other media though. Some of his lyrics are very symbolic and most of them are written from the perspective of other people (a majority of his lyrics for his second band sukekiyo are written from a female perspective for example - the Japanese language allows for such distinctions).
They started as a Visual Kei band and still are one in my opinion (they took a break from the style when they tried to gain popularity in America back in 2005-2011 but since then they incorporated it into their art once again and musically they never seemed to have left the scene entirely - they don't submit to one genre (as most metal bands but few VK bands do) and they kept to their "theme" as a band (a thing which is very common in VK) which in their case is "pain" in all its facets.
"Vinushka" was released in 2008 so the song is already a few years old. They don't have any bad songs and I'm looking forward to whatever you choose to react to next.
But I would also love to see you react to sukekiyo. "Elisabeth addict" is the band's "Vinushka" when it comes to introduction songs.
