    *UPDATE * On the second night out, I was seeing a lot of backlash, so I did have to loosen the Distance Adjustment Screw a little and give some recoil back to the gears. I will be monitoring this closely.

      I have a similar problem but cannot see any movement of the block when I try to move the housing. How do you get the unit to rock so that you can detect this 1mm movement? I have not seen any info on what you need to do. Also, the two adjustment screws seem to be locked in and I do not wish to break the Allen keys! Can you advise?

    Hi Chuck .
    Man do I feel the pain and hardship you went through to figure your problem out. Like all backyard astro imaging nut we all are.... we painstakingly push through. I don’t have the same mount as you but yet I feel your frustration and pain.... But you figured it out Chuck ! Let’s not forget that you image quite extensively and perhaps you ran that mechanism to its limits... but also Chuck, your amazing images were well recognized and appreciated and published !
    In your video we didn’t see the painstaking hardship you went through all night and all evening, but we sure know very well that feeling...

    wow, this video was over a year ago, but I just bought this same mount second hand and the guy I bought it from told me about the "bounce". I just opened it up today and that adjustment screw had backed out completely. Thanks for showing this!! Now there is another guy on youtube who struggled with this DEC motor and Im going to see if he knows how to set it correctly.

    Hey chuck! I know this is an older video but I’m having the same issue. Was the tension screw the issue? Also having an issue with the dec homing. Seems to go into super Mach speed and slew the dec south. Celestron is no help at all. Thanks and clear skies!

  • @HollomanUFOLanding

    On my CGXL I encountered the same problem you did with the mount doing the crazy dance. I found what the problem was - for me, it was not turning tracking 'on' on the hand controller *before* connecting to plate solving software, in my case APT. APT will turn tracking 'on' when you select a GOTO command to an object to plate solve it.
    I found that if I did not enable tracking first before connecting to APT, later in the night when disconnecting from APT, the mount would start to do those crazy jerky movements almost as though it did not know where it was anymore. Whenever I turn tracking 'on' first before connecting to APT I don't have these issues.

  • @ejohn1164

    This is only a guess, but if the screw was Soo loose that the worm gear was slipping a bit then the encoder would tell the mount the it over corrected and tell the dec to travel in the other direction. This would cause the oscillations seen in the video. I'm not familiar with the CGX but if you can remove the distance adjustment screw completely then you can put a dab of thread locker on it. This will prevent the screw from moving in the future.

    • @ChucksAstrophotography
      @ChucksAstrophotography  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Eric - yes, I've been told by others that's a good idea to prevent the screw from moving in the future. I just need to make sure I know how much to screw it in. On the second night, I was seeing some backlash, so I had to loosen it a bit.

    Weird, we seem to be running into the same problems at the same time! My mount started binding the other night on both axis. I had the gear meshing pretty tight, and I think the heat from that day caused some expansion. I made some adjustments to both dec and ra worm gears but wasn't happy with the result. I'm sending it off to the UK tomorrow to be hypertuned.

    Just recently had a similar problem with my DEC on my AVX, the DEC would run away and go back and forth like that. Took the mount all apart and spent a few days on it. At first I was worried that the motor control board was going out. To diagnose my problem, I went through the process of elimination and swapped my RA motor, which was working properly and connected it to the DEC port. That was fine, so it wasn't a motherboard or motor controller problem. I tested all the cables and the cable that leads to the DEC motor, those were fine. So I narrowed it down to the encoder. I opened up the encoder and the encoder disk had a little bit of dirt on it so I cleaned it and tested it, same problem. Then it could be a disc spacing or board alignment issue. I played with both and found that it wound up being the encoder board not being in good alignment or centered with the disk. The disc itself has a very narrow section of lines. On mine, its like the disc is not wide enough to cover fully the area between the detector and the laser diode. I played with it and got it in a sweet spot then loctited and tightened the screws on the encoder to the motor. Haven't had the problem since. But I am one of the brave ones to have taken apart my AVX several times to improve it, so I wouldn't recommend it unless your warranty is expired or you know what you are doing as a last resort. :)

    • @ChucksAstrophotography

      I was never that brave. But that's some good info, thanks. I still have an AVX.

    • @epicuniversal
      @epicuniversal 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ChucksAstrophotography hopefully you never experience the same on your AVX. It started one night while imaging when the DEC motor ran away and pulled the USB and cooler power cables out of my zwo camera. I was damn lucky that it didn't break any of the sockets in the camera. I was inside with remote desktop and what alerted me was PHD having a fit as it lost star lock because of the umcontrolled and uncommanded slew so I ran outside and immediately shut the power off to the mount. The cold temperature that night could have been a factor with shifting the encoder board out of alignment but that is just an unproven theory. Regardless, I have to keep an eye on it more now.

      @@epicuniversal Oh, one time my cables got tangled and my CGX kept trying to guide. It yanked on the USB cable so hard, that the USB end that plugs into my ASI1600MM camera snapped apart from the cable and go stuck in the camera. I pulled it out with pliers - somehow the camera wasn't damaged. My friend said next time do not make the clutches so tight on the mount - that way the mount will stop more easily when it meets resistance, but I still make them tight, lol.

    I would be concerned about randomly tightening an adjustment screw in the drive train
    Without fully understanding what it does.
    It may be an eccentric adjuster if it is at right Angles to the drive train?
    Are there any other screws in the area?
    This would be harder to get correct meshing.
    If you over tighten the meshing you will loose any lubricant quite quickly.
    And wear the worm wheel assembly prematurely.

  • @joep1551
    @joep1551 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think you got it Chuck...it doesn't seem to be a gear or belt problem, because if that were the case tightening a little bolt wouldn't of accomplished anything. I don't know if your aware of a product called lock tight...goes by other names also. But if you can figure out away to determine exactly how far in the bolt should be, by counting rotations. You could then apply some LT to the threads to lock it in place. It's not permanent, so you can adjust the bolt later if needed. Just takes a LITTLE more effort. But I think you got it, especially since the owners manual even tells you to check it periodically.

      One tiny dot of LT will fix that forever. Just make sure you buy BLUE and not red LT or you will not be able to adjust the screw later if needed. Blue will be perfect for this problem. Use a toothpick and get a dot of the blue LT on the end of it and touch it to the middle of the screw thread. Then just put it in reasonably tight and it should stay there forever but still be adjusted if needed in the future. Red LT is permanent!
