  • Brazilian jiu-jitsu can be a fun and productive sport to participate in. However, there are many reasons for a gym to not be the right fit. This video explores reasons why a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gym could be bad for its members. I talked about different factors such as contracts for signing up to the gym. At the end of the day the choice is going to come down to whether or not you want to continue to train bjj at your gym or a different one.
This video also explores ways that you can mitigate bad Brazilian jiu-jitsu gyms. Is possible to still get really good training even if you are not at a good gym. Grappling is a sport that you practice on your own and with the Advent of different instructionals it is possible to learn jiu-jitsu online and practice it in person even if your gym is subpar.
This video can essentially be summed up as “Just train and have fun"

@@ChristopherCarpenter I did 1 week and stopped. I am now back training and been going 6 weeks. My coach roll with me 2 times now. He make it so easy on me. Was great fun but I notice not many guys want to train with me or even talk to me. It isn’t that much fun really

@@tonybauckham 54 year old guy here. I feel your pain and a lot of it depends on the gym you're at. A lot of 'competitive MMA gyms' are geared towards a different bunch than us, so that's where their focus lies. My 1st bjj gym was a competitive MMA gym and it definitely had a different vibe than a straight BJJ gym. You might want to hunt around and find a gym where the majority of students aren't hardcore MMA jacked 20 year olds, but that has a wide age range (I'm still the 2nd oldest in my gym...but they aren't trying to take my head off every roll).

@@Talviir there a few older people at my gym but they are mostly competitive younger guys and girls. Yes they do have mma comp guys there also. They have a massive click and it feels intimidating sometimes. In general I try to just focus on what I am doing and don’t look around. I really don’t find it a friendly atmosphere to train. I only doing as a hobby and I don’t wish to sign the 6 months contract. Is a shame as I really enjoy the challenge.

If there is 10 different species of mold on the mats. Its time to find a new gym.

Idk man I appreciate a gym that has diversity. Everyone is allowed to train, even the fungus under the mats.

Hard to find a 'contract free' gym these days, unfortunately. Closest I've found is a contract with an 'escape clause' (eg. 1 month written notice). Made the mistake of going to a gym that 'didnt' have an escape clause...even when i was out for a month with a broken hand from the gym and then knee surgery for a torn meniscus from the gym (was a particularly bad year for me).

Never heard of paying for stripes. I got two in one night on promotion night. Training now 8 months.

Heck yeah! Congratulations on your progress. Also the paying for stripes is gross and lame in my opinion and it was a factor into why I wanted to leave the gym (it was a Gracie Barra).
